“Spectacular!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2014 via mobile

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights while on vacation, travelling throughout Italy and it was simply amazing. The staff was so friendly and helpful, they are very proud of Tropea and we felt that they really wanted us to enjoy our experience! (Francesco was especially kind each day and suggested excellent restaurants for us to try in the area!) There is a FREE shuttle to and from the hotel to various beaches just minutes away--- which also included the use of a sun bed, sun chair and umbrella!! The price of the room was already very reasonable, (considering it's one of the safest and most beautiful beach towns), so this was such an added bonus each day! The place where the shuttle brings you is simply paradise and there are many great restaurants to choose from right on the beach. Hotel Tropis and Tropea are VERY family friendly, we were travelling as a couple which was excellent but noticed that there were families enjoying themselves everywhere! Our hotel room was very clean, had great air conditioning and offered everything we needed and more! It's a short walk into the main part of the city from Tropis and it was nice to walk back 5 minutes out of the main city to the hotel away from the crowds; in a safe and quiet area. Tropea was our paradise and hotel Tropis offered a safe and comfortable place for us to recharge after busy days of lounging by the ocean, swimming, eating amazing food and exploring their beautiful town.

Tropea is the worst place I have ever visited. There are bags of rubbish on every street corner. I noticed this on arrival and as I was leaving the same rubbish was still there we were in Tropea three days!

The streets are a mess so uneven the pavements are a death trap some of them you need a pole vault to step up to them.

The hotel itself was average it was noisy and our neighbours had their tv on and it may as well have been in the room with us this was until one o'clock in the morning. It was not at a really loud volume the walls must be paper thin.

The food is outstanding!! The staff are nice. There is a very regimented feeling to the hotel we were given a list of rules on arrival...something lacks.

If you stay in Tropea go to the lavoratory before you leave your hotel public toilets in restaurants and bars in the town are atrocious. If those poor hygiene facilities were here in Ireland the place would be closed down.

We went for a meal in Hotel Tropis. The manager asked us had we booked we said no he said you should always book a table in advance. We sat down to realise that there were at least half of the tables in the restaurant free. Calm down on the organisation front.

There was a staff meeting before the doors of the restaurant opened. It was supposed to open at 7.30pm. it was still closed at 7.40 and there were a queue of residents outside the door!! It felt a bit like a canteen visit rather that a restaurant in a hotel.

When I was eating my starter I had raised a forkful of food to my mouth my plate was still full and a waiter said to me 'are you finished madam?' What is that all about? They need to think about the customer more than their regimented routine.

Food was outstanding I hasten to add flavours are fresh and quantities are just right. I asked for a glass of wine before dinner in the bar one night and received a little snack plate, there were prawns with mango on a cocktail stick and a cucumber dip...I have never tasted anything like it. It was gorgeus the freshness of the prawn (like it was just out of the sea) the taste with the mango really worked and the dip just combined these flavours.

A poor rating seems harsh because the food was so good but everything else lets Tropis down, the biggest drawback is Tropea, secondly the rules have to go (so off putting), thirdly always put the customer first and encourage staff to stop hurrying our experience.

Extremely expensive!! £390 just for the double room for three nights for this standard of hotel is ridiculous. We were given a Junior suite in a five star hotel for one night for £98 euro! With breakfast!

Would not recommend Tropea to my worst enemy.

Spent 8 nights at the Tropis, beginning of July. Reception staff were very helpful, all requests were dealt with very quickly, efficiently and with a smile. Breakfast was good - the usual. Lunches were good. Stayed for evening meal one night which again was good. Room good with nice size balcony. Requested room with sea view, which we got - but did not think it was worth paying extra for. Regular shuttle service to beach - although we did not use it. Nice pool, which was a must in the hot weather. Bar staff very good. Bar prices were very reasonable - same as in local bars ! The hotel is a short walk out of the main Town - approx 5 min walk.
Nice small town, variety of shops - a mixture of obvious tourist tat and individual shops. Plenty of restaurants to choose from although we found the menu's to be quite similar, fish/pasta/pizza being main options, very limited choice for meat eaters. Restaurants reasonably priced - average between 6 - 15 euros for main evening meal per person. Drinks reasonably priced, house wine approx 8 - 10 euros for a bottle, although they do vary - ask to try before you commit yourself. Shorts/cocktails approx 5 euros.
Went on 3 island day trip, which was good, although we both felt that the time on Stromboli was a bit of a waste of time. Went on local train/ferry to Sicily (Messina) which was OK but seemed like a lot of effort for not very much reward.
Am glad we have visited this part of Italy, very few British tourists, mainly Italian, German, Dutch, Swiss. Not over touristy/developed. Seemed obvious that less investment in area as not obvious/main tourist destination.

This was a bit of an experiment for us and the first time we'd been to a resort hotel like this, which probably effects the review a bit. It was basically just big and bland - big, bland breakfast and a big, bland room. The terrace was a great size, but the sea view was really just a bit of sea between apartment buildings. The pool was a good size, but after spending a bit of time at the beach we didn't see the need for it as the sea is clear, shallow and very 'swimmable' here. The breakfast staff were very friendly, but reception were not so much. We didn't try the restaurant as breakfast was pretty weak and there were so many great options in town. Tropea town and beaches are walkable, but they'd be tricky if you had any mobility challenges because of the heat and the steep hills/stairs, and I think we'd opt for somewhere closer to the centre but without a pool. From the other guests there, the hotel seems to mainly cater for older people on package tours, which is probably why it didn't have quite the right vibe for us.

Would certainly recommend Tropea, though - really lovely place with lots of nice buzz but in quite a calm and gentle way. Beautiful beaches and plenty of great food options, especially if you're into fish.

We chose Hotel Tropis as we were only spending one night passing through Tropea by car and we didn't want the hassle of parking at a smaller hotel closer to the centre. In saying that, we were pleasantly surprised how close it was to stroll to the historic centre. Some reviewers gave the impression the hotel is a long way out, but it is certainly not.

The hotel was simple to find by car, and the parking was free, and easy.

Our room was a triple, and was very large, with a large bathroom also, which is refreshing after staying in tiny rooms in bigger cities! Our room didnt have a view, but we dint need one for only one night. We did have a balcony though which allowed lots of fresh air into the room.

The breakfast was ok, although we went at the end of the service and lots of items were depleted, but there was still plenty left to choose from.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

My only problem was that I could not find an English version of the website, so was forced to use a 3rd party site (booking.com) where I normally like to book directly with the hotel where possible.

I hope to one day go back to Tropea for longer, and would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again!

The reason for the very good rating is the perfect location within easy walking distance to the small historic city center and ample parking on the grounds and/or very close.
The hotel is very new but the lay out of halls and rooms leaves something to be desired. Also it caters mainly to groups and when we came to breakfast many items were no longer available and the staff was less than enthousiastic about going for new stuff for the only two people left.

Definitely this place deserves a good mark. The location is not perfect, but Tropea is small city, so this is not a problem.
The staff is absolutely professional, very kind and helpful. If I had a problem there they were solving this immediately. The place is very new, comfortable and very clean. Every room has a spacious terrace. I had with beautiful view. Breakfast was perfect!
There were only some inconvenience - I had some problem with shower and hot water, WI-Fi was very slow. But it seems the similar problem was anywhere in Tropea.
