“excellent value”
Reviewed 18 June 2012

It is hard to find fault with this hotel leaving aside two issues which I will come back to later and which the hotel can do little about without rebuilding the place.

The hotel is ideally located, as close to the town centre as you can get, but still within walking distance of the beaches. (not far but a few hundred steps involved) The restaurants (of which there are so many in Tropea) are within yards of the door.

Breakfast is excellent, substantial with a cooked option which varies every day. It is served on a very pleasant rooftop terrace with a great view of the towns rooftops and the sea beyond.

The room we had (7) is at the very top and had a good view of the surrounding rooftops, the hills and sea (just). Room was a good size, very clean, and comfortable with a very fast and free wi-fi connection.

Staff were helpful and the taxi from the station arranged by them was waiting for us when the train arrived. This cost 10 Euro and although the station is within walking distance, the streets of tropea are large cobbles which are not good for pulling a suitcase over and the hotel not easy to find tucked away in a side street. so it was money well spent after a day travelling.

The issues - well this hotel is not for those who are not able to cope with stairs of which here are many just to get to the reception and inside the hotel as well. I do not think this is a fault - just a feature of a 12th century building with character.

The bells of the Duomo, which is across the street, ring three times a day starting at 7am. it is only for a few minutes though and you will get this everywhere in Italy. other than this it is a very peaceful setting.

to sum up this a very good and excellent value hotel perfectly located in the centre of the town

Very nice B&B. The rooms are small but nice and have all comfort. In the middle of the old town. Nice staff. Very nice roof top where the breakfast is served. a pitty the two floors of stairs to get to the reception desk.

Tropea is a town where you walk a lot, and there are a lot of steps. This hotel is up seven or so flights of stairs in a nice courtyard (you are outdoors while climbing the steps) and consider the many, many steps you would climb coming back from the beach, just to encounter the additional challenge when arriving back to your hotel. If you are fit, this is not a problem.

The hotel is GREAT! Rooms are beautiful and very large, bathroom large and spotless. Very clean and modern. See photos attached.

Service is inconsistent. One man at reception was friendly, top notch, smiling and attentive. The other seemed not to care, reminded us of stereotypical eastern european mentality toward service - no eye contact, no smile, more concerned with his ancient cellphone than speaking with us, even refused twice to send a phone call from my child's mother to us in the room even though she gave the room number.

I would have rated this hotel five out of five if it wasn't for the poor service from the one staff.

Room Tip: Service is hit or miss. Hope you are staying there when the good service personnel are in charge.

This was a perfect location just off the main square, but tucked away in a quiet alley in a quaint building. The staff was very helpful in making train schedule plans and recommending places to go. The room was a good size at a reasonable price with working wi-fi and a nice balcony overlooking the duomo and surrounding countryside. The breakfast on the roof was very substantial and had an amazing view of the sea, town and surrounding area.

We arrived in Tropea in the afternoon with no hotel booking. From tripadvisor we decided to try this hotel based on the reviews. We were dissapointed however - but it must be said that as we had no booking - we did get the last room available and hence was probably the least nice of the hotels room.

This is not a 4 star hotel in my opinion.

Pros:
Location - a few minutes walk into the centre of town.
Breakfast on the balcony was nice in the morning.
The internet worked fine - didnt experience the problems others did in previous reviews.

Cons:
There was paint falling off the walls in the hallway - in bad need of a little repair. Certainly not 4star.
The room was quite small and cluttered- may be the worst room however as we got the last one available.
The beds are very hard.
You have to climb 3 flights of steps to get to the reception of the hotel.

Note: (not really linked to the hotel but its where they recommended us to park) Driving in some places in this town (i.e. to the parking area recommended - in a square behond hte hotel) is brutal - the roads between buildings are soooo narrow - we had to push our side mirrors in! We were terrified of scraping the hire car - and we only had a small Opel Corsa. Just a recommendation that maybe you should look into parking in main areas of the town or elsewhere as we found it a lotof hassle. It was free however.

Room Tip: Book in advance - From other reviews some of the other rooms sound better and bigger.

Our experience at Residenza il Duomo was mixed.
The good:
The staff (Daniele) was extremely helpful in accomodating a gluten-free breakfast. They went out of their way to actually buy gluten-free bread.
The breakfast terrace was lovely and overlooked the water
The room was spacious.
The view from the room of the duomo was beautiful

The bad:
The front desk staff did not speak any English and, as such, was unhelpful with finding us parking.
The bed was HARD AS A ROCK! You could feel the springs coming through the bed
The bathroom was not clean. And although they had one of those clean wraps around the toilet stating that it had been clean, we found a pubic hair on the toilet and it wasn't one of ours as we had not yet used it.
It was very NOISY! You could hear everything that happened in the piazza just outside your window. And, the church bells went off at 7:00. So, don't plan on sleeping in!

Il duomo is a small, charcterful b&b in the old town centre. Extremely well equipped, good sized rooms and charming service all add up to a great experience. Add to this a roof top terrace with magnificent views over land and tyrrhenian sea on which to breakfast, and free Internet, flatscreen TV & DVD and very reasonable minibar (£10 decent bottle of prosecco) and it's more than worth the 3 flights of stairs to get to it. Great value for money. Oh, and its right opposite the cathedral so take earplugs if you don't like church bells at 7 am.
