“Happy all the way...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2012

We just spend our second summer holidays at Baia Serena, and we can fully recommend the place. Great value, wonderful views, quiet setting, and the family running the place are the nicest hosts you could imagine. Talkative, helpful, very reasonable and easy to find if you need them.

The owners man kitchen and restaurant too in the evening, and they do make good food! There are other restaurants nearby, but going there requires a car or a bit of walking.

The pool was a treat in the summer heat and the pool area was cleaned every morning. It may not be open spot on 9.00, but on the other hand it closes later than advertised. There is a small bar there as well.

The cabins are low key, no doubt about that - spartan - but the site is priced likewise. Anytime we experienced a problem, we told the owner and he fixed it right away. We did not chose Baia for the price, but for the location and the possbility of free arrival and departure days.

The site location is good for both exploring Naples and the Sorrento/Amalfi coast. As there is just one road, you don't want to be too far out on the peninsula. The distance to the Autostrada is not big, and visiting Pompei, Herculaneum etc. is easy.

You will need a car to get the most out of the site, and don't bring a big car! The path on the site is small and the hairpins require some clutch work - and outside the site, the local interpretation of traffic rules is entertaining, at least afterwards.

I can only recommend Baia Serena and we are looking forward to our next visit.

The web site looked nice, with the pool and everything... but we were quite dissapointed when we came there. The bungalows are really small, the bathroom has a tiny shower, we got just 3 towels for 3 people for our stay, the beds were really uncomfortable (and we are not picky, when it comes to sleeping...). It is true that the view is spectacular, but that is about it. The worst dissapointment was most probably the pool: quite dirty, with leaves swimming in the pool and even a seagull that came to poop inside :( Besides, it was not yet open at 9:15, even though it should be! (Major sadness for our daughter, who was really upset!)
There were a number of things wrong in our bungalow, including electrical outlet in the bathroom (no shaving for 3 days :( ), and the TV didn't work. When we notified the owner, he said that he "didn't care about it - non mi interessa".
So, not happy at all!!!

Baia Serena describes itself as a camping village and basically what you get is a couple of notches above a tent. The accomodation is small without the niceties of life such as furniture.
We chose this accomodation because it was the cheapest place around that had 2 bedrooms and a swimming pool. We wanted a base to explore the Naples/Sorrento area and knew what to expect..
The plus points are as follows.
1. Great views over the bay of Naples looking across to Vesuvius.
2. Accomodating hosts who are friendly
3. Clean Accomodation.
The Negatives
1. The location. The beach, shops, restaurants etc are not readily available. Baia Serena is not in Vico Equense but is half way between Vico and the resort of Meta off the main Vico - Sorrento road. You need a car to get around and balls of steel to navigate the crazy neapolitan traffic. We tried the buses but there is only 1 per hour and the last one is at 9.30 PM.

Joseph was very anxious that we have a nice time at the Villagio Turistico Baia Serena.
We arrived in what was really the off season, so he had to light the pilot in the stove and hot water. The place was clean and the view magnificent. We really enjoyed our stay there. It was off the beaten path and built right on the hillside. Italians are like that. They build everything on hillsides: buildings and hotels and gardens and stores. Looks like a windstorm could just about blow everything right off. It's incredible how efficient they are in using space. One terrace at this hotel looked straight down the cliffs into the water hundreds of feet below.

These bungalows are a little hard to find. We came in on the train, and had to walk for awhile and ask every person on the way where to find it. We walked one mile along a little path alongside a road with cars and trucks whizzing past. No one knew where this place was. Then we saw some lights from a little grocery store and asked one last time. The man talked rapidly to the store owner and then said 'get in' . He drove us about 3 more miles up a steep mountain road to a dark driveway. We walked down it to an empty, unlocked office. Upon looking, we found Joseph, who checked us in for the next two nights.

After the adventure of finding the Villaggio, we appreciated the peace and quiet of the bungalow. We enjoy the outdoors, being from Montana, so for us this place really felt like we were getting away from it all and experiencing Italy, something you really need to do if you are traveling through many cities. We could cook simple meals and eat them on the terrace. Nights were quiet. Joseph was very nice and we enjoyed hearing about his family and somewhat of his life there. We did a day trip to look for some possible family, and actually met some. The bus picked us up right at the top of the driveway.

When we checked out, we were asked to to pay cash. Most of the websites note this hotel takes four major credit cards, so that almost became a problem. We were pretty low on cash at that point and argued our case. That would be a good thing to be clear on when reservations are made, to avoid misunderstanding.

We would recommend contacting the Villiaggio Turistico Baia Serena directly by email to ask specifics about how to find it and how to reach it by public transportation, if you don't have access to really study the websites, as many give directions from different transportation modes. Then grab a few groceries and a bottle of wine, and just relax, it will be worth it!
