“WONDERFUL HOTEL”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2009

Just home from a wonderful holiday in the fantastic Hotel Mariposas. This hotel is owned and run by an extremely nice family who could not have been more helpful before and during our stay.
We had a lovely upper floor double room with sea view and balcony overlooking the pool and garden. Very spacious and clean. Our friends had a ground floor room with a large private terrace.
The breakfast selection was very good - eggs boiled or scrambled, bacon, cold meats, cheese etc. and also some very nice cake and pastries.
As others have said, the walk to the town took about 15mins and the beach 5/10 mins.
We would definitely hope to go back to this hotel and can't recommend it highly enough.
A huge thank-you to Riccardo and Frederico for being so pleasant and helpful.

When we arrived at the Mariposas, which is easy to find, after a long drive from Calasetta on the south west coast, we were shown to our room - and our hearts sank. It was room 201, a tiny awkwardly shaped room adjoining the road. It was so small that there was only one bedside table and lamp, and the only other furniture was a wardrobe with two small shelves and two small drawers, and the minibar next to it with a television on top which was impossible to watch from the left hand side of the bed! The traffic noise was obviously a serious problem because traffic is going past down the hill towards the sea at a considerable speed, and the windows were not double glazed. The bathroom was also awkwardly shaped and tiny. We immediately asked for another room and were told that the hotel was full for the night but we could move the following day - an offer we accepted with alacrity. Room 201 is simply unworthy of the Mariposas, and the crazy thing is that its problems are completely avoidable, because the room has two large covered balconies, one of which is completely unusable because it overlooks the road. Fill in that balcony, make it the bathroom, and incorporate the existing bathroom into the bedroom and you would be left with a good bathroom and a much better bedroom with plenty of room for furniture and storage.

Things got better the following day. Breakfast was reasonable, laid out as a buffet on a long table bedecked with fresh bougainvillea, though I will never understand why so many otherwise good Italian hotels have nasty coffee machines as standard at breakfast. None of them make a good cappuccino. The new room (205) was very much better. Indeed, it was actually a two room suite, with one large bright room with a big double bed (and two bedside tables) and plenty of furniture and storage, and another smaller room with a large single (or very small double) bed and more storage. Road noise here was not a problem, though it was difficult to sleep in by the time the hotel wheelie bins had been collected and a nearby cockerel had done his stuff.

The gardens are pretty and well maintained. Loungers are laid out on the lawn around the pool. It is not really a swimmers pool, being quite small and no more than 1.5m deep anywhere, but it serves as a pleasant pool in which to cool down. It is noticeable that the hotel has been so designed that it is not necessary to go through reception to get to the rooms, and there are not enough car parking spaces so one often ends up parking on the street, both of which, in my view, are significant security issues.

Villisimius itself we found to be a rather charmless place. We never succeeded in finding a really good restaurant, though the Al Moro and the Su Gigante on the main road at Campus were not bad, and we never found a pleasant bar in which to enjoy a drink after dinner. The whole place seemed to be dead at lunchtime. Its main claim to fame is, of course, the beach, which is absolutely superb, consisting of hundreds of yards of fine sand facing pretty well due south. There are several more superb beaches a short drive away.

Overall, however, after a bad start, we grew to quite like the Mariposas. The staff were pleasant, and they rectified the problem of the unacceptable room (la chambre anglaise - Italian style?) as soon as they could and at no extra cost. Villisimius appears to be poorly served with small hotels and as a base from which to enjoy the wonderful local beaches the Mariposas has much to recommend it.

This is the second part of our holiday, following on from the Hotel Regina Margherita in Cagliari...

We picked up our hired car, a lovely Fiat 500 in 'Ferrari Red' which we named Rosa, awh. No problems with paperwork and picked up the car from the centre of Cagliari through Europcar. After a few left then right then left again turns, we were on our way to Villasimius along the coastal road. Yes the road is crazy at times but the views are spectacular and the sea is beautiful!

The Mariposas is about a 10-15 min walk from the centre of Villasimius (depending on the height of the heels you're wearing!) and in a quiet part of the resort. We were offered a drink on arrival which was a nice touch, and a seat while our paperwork was checked out.

Our room was on the first floor and the view was lovely. It's exactly how it looks on the website - the pool, the sun loungers, the grass, the flowers, the trees - it's all lovely.

We had five wonderful nights there lazing by the pool and going for little jaunts round the coast. We got a sun lounger every day just after 10am - sometimes we were first there! There were mostly Italian holidaymakers plus a nice French family with their two children - but mostly couples. The only noise made was from me when the sprinklers unexpectedly came on one morning and I got a very cooling shower!

The breakfasts were great with plenty of food on offer - juices, cereals, toast, breads, cheese 'n' ham, cooked food, yogurts and plenty of lovely croissants - they're not calorific, no it's just like eating air!

Villasimius is a relaxed resort and very laid back. There are plenty of eating places and we ate somewhere different every night. Some nice shops too selling coral jewellery and knives (!) plus the usual holiday nick-nacks.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming with a good grasp of English. It's good to have a smattering of Italian though - enough to understand basic directions or how much something costs. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family, it's an absolute gem.

Beautiful location, with a great view!!
The staff is nice and friendly.
We want to go back to Hotel Mariposas, so we will not make this hotel very populair and expensive ;-)
But it is a great location, the center of Villasimius is about 20 minuts walking and the beautiful simius beach is about 10 minuts.
The breakfast is great!!
One of the best hotels in Sardegna!!!

Nice size hotel, nice pool, spacious rooms. Our room was on the end so a bit noisy as next to the road. I would say this hotel was better for families with kids than couples as there were lots of kids there round the pool the whole day when we stayed.

Beautifully located with a view to die for. The staff unbelievably kind and friendly and just simply wonderful.
I dont want to rave too much because I want to go back and stay there over and over and wont be able too if it becomes too popular!! If you are looking for beauty, tranquility its the place. For couples, friends and familys alike somehow everyone keeps themselves to themselves mantaining a feeling of a peaceful relaxation. Every room has a balcony and you can watch the multitude of Swallows as they dive in and out of their nests. The beach is a short walk but if you have a car there are many others. Rooms are beautifully clean. The family who own this place are simply lovely. The most helpful, dignified and welcoming family.
Breakfast and pool fantastic. The rooms are not very soundproofed but thank God it seems to attract the type who are there for good rest! If you want to remind yourself of all that is beautiful in nature go to Sardinia, its really is a garden of Eden. Just pick up any plastic you see on the beach and keep the waters as beautiful as they are!
Hotel Mariposas was just wonderful and I am very grateful to all who wrote reviews on here. Thank you.

We just returned from our vacation in Sardinia and we felt that we have to repay to all tripadvisor contributors and readers for an incredible tip that we got with the Hotel Mariposas.

I. Since we were traveling with our 3 years old, the most exciting discovery for us was how extremely Child Friendly that place was!!! We honestly felt like we were visiting relatives who happened to accommodate very large family with a lot of kids of all ages that were always having good time (despite the fact that they were speaking different languages). Another discovery that would make every parent thrilled - The beach! The beach that was 200 meters away is every parent paradise because it has very shallow water, very fine sand (and is so close to the hotel).
II. The economics and experiences. We happen to travel a lot and as such we had something to compare with. The Hotel Mariposas is definitely a great price/quality combination. The feel of the hotel was far beyond what we were expecting. From what we understood, the place was built by the father of the family that owns and runs the place and you can feel that in every detail. Everything from the color of curtains in the rooms to the hand crafted furniture is selected with a great love and in combination with stuff that is eager to meet all your need it creates very special feeling…the feeling of being cared for.
III. Location, location, location. Obviously everyone has own ideas of what is more important for their perfect travel experiences (some people here were complaining about “modest” selection at breakfast ?!!) In our humble opinion that particular corner of Sardinia is a place where so many hidden gems are around that you simply have to have some kind of transportation to explore and enjoy those unspoiled by development (see Costa Rei for a better example) rustic villages, valleys and beaches. But there are different ways to enjoy this place; from what we understood there are a lot of people who are coming to Mariposas just for a long weekend (from all over Europe but mostly Italian cities) and all they are looking for is charm of the Sardinian village and nearby beach (as they mostly drive to get here looks like driving around is not something they are looking forward to do on their weekends).
IV. The Village. Having Villasimius just 5 min away from the Hotel is as great as being only 5 min apart from it. You can enjoy all that civilization that this wonderful place can offer to you and still have a picturesque meadow in between the Hotel and the crowds.
