Wonderful hosts, and magical environ. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we could not rent a car so we arrived by public transport. The hosts picked us up at the bus depot, no charge to us! They were wonderful and friendly, despite not having the best English.

The room was big, with a small patio in front of the door. Great place to relax with a glass of wine. Wifi worked decently. There is no a/c, so keep that in mind. It is an uphill hike into town, about 15 solid minutes. Depending on the heat, this can be fairly strenuous. Better with a vehicle.

Price was great, recommend this hotel.

Il Portone is located just within the Etruscan gate Porta Diana, offering a nice view of an active farm/olive grove and nearby city hills. It is difficult to find and is a good 1.5 km from the Porta Fiorentine into town. I certainly could not climb the steep hill up in ten minutes; twenty strenuous minutes would be more like it. Parking around the city costs 1-2 euros per hour.
The apartment was clean, airy and spacious, but without amenities such as TV or hair dryer. The hostess/owner was friendly and helpful, but there is no indication of an office, and we stumbled around the property for 10 min before she appeared. Her three cats were purrsonable.
A gravel lot leads to terraced , graveled steps leading to the apartments. Transporting of luggage was unpleasant.
If one is staying for some time, wishes a somewhat bucolic environment a bit distant from town and wants to do ones own cooking, this is a place to consider.

Had one night (sadly) in Volterra at the start of our holiday. Il Portone was a great base. Admittedly ten mins walk uphill to get into the town but the facilities are brilliant. We had a small apartment with separate kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Shame we were only acing the one nigh as we din really make the most of what we had. It was on the first floor so if you were staying for more than a couple of nights I would recommend asking for a ground floor apartment. These had an outside seating area with a view over the valley, fab for an evening diner or aperitif. Volterra itself is beautiful and is in a lovely location with views over the Tuscan countryside. Highly recommend.

This is a beautiful little place located at a truly picturesque spot. Enchanting atmosphere is guaranteed by the staff and the bulding itself. Very clean and the staff is also very nice and helpful.
It is not far from the cuty centre and the view from iur rooms were simly amazing.
But what we liked the most is the enchantin atmosphere, just the thing you imaghine rural italy to be.
Fantastic place we will definitely return if we can.

Our large apartment was filled with character and comfort, except for the fact that the heating was inadequate for the cold weather. Would be great in summer with large windows offering beautiful country views. Fantastic grounds and friendly cats. The charming town of Volterra was a short walk away. Highly recommended.

The Rough Guide is rather disparaging about Volterra. It is wrong. Free of crowds and wrapped in ancient charm, it is the perfect base for reaching out in all directions in search of the "real" Tuscany. How better to start than by staying at Il Portone, named after the hulking Etruscan gate around which one turns to enter the green oasis of this lovely place. The views up to the hilltop are magnificent. The rooms are large, and full of simple character. I guess in high summer, some of them might get rather warm, but the wind blows constantly on Volterra bringing cool at the end of chokingly hot days. The hosts are charming, and the steep walk up to the walls a great way of building up a thirst for that first Prosecco.....I would love to think we'd be back but life is short and we have much to see. Enjoy.

We found this Residence very comfortable and convenient for visiting the beautiful city of Volterra. We resided in one of the smaller apart but space was plenty for a couple. The garden is lovely and they let us use it to cook a wonderful dinner for us and friends who had come to visit.
