Agriturismo Villa Opera
Reviewed 19 July 2014 via mobile

We enjoy staying in the countryside at agriturismos and then higher end places in the city. So a certain amount of rough around the edges is expected and welcome even if we also enjoy some of the luxury of city places as well.

That said, I don't understand the majority of other ratings. Perhaps these people haven't tried other places? We found this to be lacking. In particular, dirty. The worst was the bathroom ceiling with many dead insects (sorry should have taken photo). But other things like a shower that floods the bathroom and terse warnings of taking out your trash all amounted to a less than pleasant or warm experience.

For the same price, we've stayed at wonderful (rustic), clean and warm family welcome places as well located.

Recommend you look bit further.

We had a fantastic one week holiday in Villa Opera, Volterra. Our host, Francesca is a warmhearted, lovely woman who was ready our every questions, makes our holiday perfect. Our apartment was a perfect, authentic and clean accomodation. Volterra was a perfect spot to start discover Tuscany by car. Thank you, Zsuzsi, Betty & Lincoln

A very good stay at Villa Opera in Volterra Tuscany. The location itself was brilliant and ideal for exploring Tuscany. We managed to visit both Florence and Sienna in our weeks stay and had a trip to the coast.

A car is definitely needed to stay here. It was a little unfortunate as we thought we would be in walking distance of restaurants etc but this was not the case and so my partner had to drive every night, which was a little disappointing.

The host Francesca is very lovely and you can really see she enjoys her job. Francesca and the owners held a dinner in the garden, which was a lovely idea - it meant we were able to meet the other guests and also try the Villa Opera's wine from their vineyard. They provided a traditional Italian 3 course dinner (buffet) and lots of their wine for €15 - which I think is really reasonable!

We absolutely loved the outside area - it was so picturesque! You can see a lot of thought had been put in for providing guests with facilities to make the stay more enjoyable I.e. barbecue areas, picnic tables, sun loungers etc - all of which we enjoyed.

The pool was also lovely and we spent a few mornings/afternoons there in between exploring Tuscany. It was a good size and kept very clean. It didn't seem to get very busy whilst we were there and people kept themselves to themselves.

The rooms were quite authentic shall we say - quite basic, but at the price I'm not sure what else to expect. The rooms are not cleaned whilst you stay, i.e. no fresh sheets, towels etc but we knew this would be the case before we arrived and there are also laundry facilities on site. We often made lunch in the rooms and found the facilities were fine with plenty of cutlery, saucepans etc.

The only major complaint we had was the boiler in our apartment - a lot of the time it wouldn't work or would stop working halfway through a shower and so we'd only have cold water to use. We could also smell gas and a fellow guest mentioned that they too could as they passed our room. We reported it several times and the owner even came to have a look, but typically it worked every time they checked and so we were left to feel stupid. I'm not sure if we had children how happy I would have been to stay in this room with the worry of gas.

Volterra is a beautiful city and I'm so pleased we chose to base our holiday here this year. I would definitely recommend staying in Volterra, it has so much history and is so unspoilt and untouristy it really was great.

The place of Villa Opera is simply amazing! Wonderful view over the Tuscan hills, Volterra and othe places are close, but you are in the natural environment. Even the seaside is accessible within 35 minutes, when it is too hot. You find forthcoming and very helpful hosts, who are proud on their Villa. Facilities are excellent, including the pool, which was all the time very clean. Nice rooms, practical arrangements, nice outdoor tables in the well kept garden for a Tuscan breakfast. Whenever you turn to the hosts, especially to Francesca, you get good hints and advice where to go to eat, what to see, even some local recipes...We spent 5 nights in Villa Opera, I would go back at any time - if you really want a friendly, and authentic place to stay for a few days I can whole heartedly recommend this wonderful place. And do not miss the owners' own produced olive oil and honey!

The ground floor apartments are dark, no view at all.

Some bad experience briefly: dirty floor in the kitchen, dirty kitchen equipments, moldy clothes-hangers, spider nests and we found a wasp's nest in the room as well, you get only 1 toilet paper roll and 1 trash bag (for 4 persons!), if you need more, you have to buy them for yourself, hard to find the trash container (we didn't find it and nobody told us where to put the trash, so we left next to the selective bottle bin and they were very unfriendly with us), poor wifi connection, no oven in the apartments.

Not very suitable for disabled persons, strict EU regulations like security informations (emergency exit, what to do in case of fire, etc.) are missing from the apartments as well.

I don't really understand, why we have to pay 60 euro for the cleaning, if the rooms and equipments are dirty and mouldy from the moment you get there.

If you stay there for a vacation, better check the apartment THOROUGHLY, before taking it over! Choose the upper floor apartments, if you want some sunshine...

Room Tip: choose from the upper floor apartments
