“Magical Weekend”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Fortunately, this secret haven is tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, difficult to find yet worth the journey. A real hidden gem! The reveal as you arrive is fabulous and it just gets better and better. Camilla and her team are amazing and are filled with passion for everything Pignano and the environment. The views are breath taking and the rooms stunning, this is a place to relax and enjoy, the culture here is wonderful and the organically farmed own produce or sourced produce make for wonderful food and drink. Clearly this is a result of a vast amount of love being introduced in the kitchens.

Anthony the head chef changes the menus daily and will always tailor to suit your specific tastes, he really goes the extra mile and is typical mod Michelin Starred restaurants.

My fiancee said it was the best nights sleep she had ever had and we left so relaxed, next time we will go biking, horse riding, walking and possibly get involved with the pottery, yoga and painting….. there is just so much to consider doing….if you want to.

Thank you Pignano, we will be back.

My partner and I spent four amazing days at Borgo Pignano. We arrived very late at night (like midnight) and got horribly lost, but the staff there got us to the hotel by phone and even had snacks for us in our room. Everything was just lovely--the staff were super friendly and helpful, and they actually seem happy if not evolved as people like you are being welcomed into their world for a short moment. The room was gorgeous, the food phenomenal (including the amazing dinners which are truly works of art), and the setting and views incredible. The other guests also were very nice and friendly. The whole vibe was great from start to finish. I would come back gladly and look forward to doing so!

We have just got back from a five-day stay at Borgo Pignano having celebrated a very special birthday there, and are feeling quite down not to still be amongst the Pignanians! We were not expecting such a gem, and if it were not for the lovely people there, we would really not be sharing our secret find.

In more than 30yrs of travel, even in the best hotels with Michelin star restaurants, we had yet to be persuaded to dine in for more than a night. But Chef Anthony Burd changed that. From our very first dish we were wowed. Such amazing flavours and colours: world class cuisine.

Borgo Pignano is in world of its own – it’s a creative, independent spirit, but never haughty. The artists who stay from time to time must take inspiration from its beautiful views, inspiring those around them. We could even see the island of Corsica across the valley on our birthday afternoon, the view was so clear! We sat drinking champagne in the golden glow of the setting Tuscan sun. Perfect.

And more than just the wonderful home-grown food was the service. Attentive, unobtrusive, with a friendly smile. Thank you Paola for your sense of fun, and ‘always sunny’ disposition.

The building and gardens were renovated to a high standard. Our room (La Bandita) was charming with early morning sun in the bedroom and very large en suite bathroom.

At the heart of Borgo Pignano is its founder. The dynamic pulse that beats at all hours of day and night, is Camilla! Such a remarkable lady who cares so very much. Thank you again Camilla for your delicious home-made birthday cake, cantucci and pasta–madre (yep, it survived the journey!)

Pignano is food for the soul, in all senses.
And with our sincere thanks not only to Camilla, Anthony and Paola, but also to Michele, Francesco,Theodora,Gabriele and Luciano who made our time at Borgo Pignano so memorable. We will be back!

We booked our stay direct with the Borgo and both the General Manager, Luciano and Front of House Manager, Michele, really could not have been more patient and accommodating in sorting out the booking and making this holiday happen!!
Borgo Pignano is a dream of a destination, nestled in the Tuscan hills.
You enter the Borgo through a medieval arch before crossing to another that leads into a Courtyard which is surrounded by the Villa.
On arrival we were made to feel immediately welcome and were provided with refreshment by the restaurant manager, Gabriele, whilst our luggage was taken up to our rooms – yes I did say rooms.
The bedrooms really are unbelievable – spacious, sumptuously and tastefully decorated with views to die for.
The front of house staff were extremely helpful, Francesco in particular, making suggestions every day as to what we might like to do and then organising it for us.
Michele also could not be more helpful – nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff.
The Borgo has its own horses and we went riding around the 750 acre estate, accompanied by Megan, the resident equestrian manager.
The views of the grounds and surrounding countryside are truly stunning and the gardens round the Villa are both beautiful and relaxing. The photos on the website, good though they are, scarcely do it justice.
All the public rooms are decorated with as much care and taste as the bedrooms.
Buffet breakfast, consisting mainly of food grown or produced on or by the Borgo, is served in one of the two restaurants; the other is used in the evening for dinner.
Dinner is in itself an event – a four course meal from a menu that changes daily. Although it is a Set Menu each day, it is published in Reception and, if by chance you don’t like something on it, the chef, Anthony Byrd, will provide a suitable alternative.
Anthony works hard to invent combinations of ingredients and flavours that never fail to surprise and delight.
If you need any help with the choice of wine for dinner, Gabriele is on hand to make suggestions which invariably match to perfection the food being provided.
The ethos of the Borgo is fascinating and Camilla, who founded the whole project, will be delighted to tell you all about it and give you a well informed and enthusiastic guided tour of the Estate.
I should mention that there is an Infinity Pool with spectacular views, carved out of an ancient Etruscan quarry.
There are many other aspects to this fascinating destination which I will not set out here as I do not want to spoil the pleasurable surprises you will undoubtedly have in discovering them.
All I will say is that it is an interesting combination of formality and informality (however you want to play it) but either way you are made to feel welcome straight away and, if you want to, part of the ‘Family.’

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent with great views but the suites are worth the extra.

We had a wonderful stay at La Fonte Villa, a beautiful converted farmhouse at Borgo Pignano. . Overlooking a beautiful lake and surrounded by rolling hills, La Fonte is the perfect place for a peaceful, relaxing week of reading and walking in the Tuscan countryside. It's also well located for day trips to Florence, Pisa, San Giminiano and Volterra.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Borgo Pignano is a charming private Tuscan estate on 750 acres of secluded and unspoiled fields, hills, woods and gardens near Volterra and San Gimignano, in the province if Pisa, between Florence and Siena. Pignano’s main building is an eighteenth century villa, surrounded by English gardens, with pristine landscapes that are unchanged from Renaissance times. To the west, a series of hills unfolds towards the sea; to the east, woods and gardens are alive with the song of birds. There are 14 elegantly furnished rooms and suites, some with their original frescos and all with white marble or travertine bathrooms and spectacular views. An elevator serves every floor save the cellar. There are generous public rooms and dining areas and WI-FI is available throughout the villa. On top of the Villa, it is always possible to lodge at the Podere La Fonte, Casa del Lago, the Artists’ house or to rent one of the Borgo’s apartments. The public rooms of the villa include a two-storey ballroom with a terrazzo floor and a balcony; a large library with a fireplace flanked by comfortable sofas; a music room with an antique Bechstein grand; a banquet room in a two hundred year old kitchen, a smaller dining room, a television room, a billiards room, a children’s activity room, a small gym, and a yoga and meditation room. The infinity swimming pool was carved from a limestone quarry on the slope of a hill directly beneath the villa. There is an adjacent outdoor bar and an outdoor shower. Borgo Pignano’s chefs prepare three healthy, authentic Tuscan meals every day, using the freshest local and organic ingredients, which vary by season. Bread, croissants, pizza, and biscotti are baked in our wood- burning oven. Vegetables, oil, grains, honey, and fruit come directly from the property, or from neighboring organic and biodynamic farms. We pay particular attention to the special dietary needs of our guests for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or anti-allergenic menus. ... more   less
