Borgo Pignano
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 August 2014

My wife and I and our 4 kids, age 1-11, spent two weeks at Borgo Pignano in July 2014. Apart from the weather, it was excellent. Borgo Pignano is a collection of buildings on a huge own terrain, right between Volterra and San Gimignano with post card Tuscany views over the hills. We stayed in two rather basic appartments in the main building, with fine bathrooms.

What made our stay so special was two things. First of all, (child) friendliness of the staff. Of course, Italians are on average already very friendly towards children, but this was even better. An example: one of our sons forgot his sneakers after a swim in the (rather spectacular) pool. He was lent shoes of the son of one of the staff members. The day after, the sneakers were delivered. The reception staff is excellent.

Secondly, and my wife and I are critical on food, the quality of the serving staff and kitchen. That was really exceptional. The daily menu is exactly what you hope to find in Italy (the chef is American by the way), balanced, traditional but with a slight twist, local or even self produced products, excellent wines, fabulous staff. Besides, staff organizes once per week a barbecue evening and a pizza evening. That may sound not too convincing, but it truly is. All kids are allowed to help the cooks in preparing the pizza's in an outside kitchen, and both the pizza as the barbecue night is of high quality. Another example of the client attitude of the staff: the chef comes by the tables every evening to make chat with the guests and inform how they liked the food. One time I mentioned I like lentils. On the menu next day: lentils. In my opinion, that is really exceptional and causes a "WOW-effect".

Was it perfect? No, but close. Personally I am not too fond of the Borgo's website (hard to find factual information), and housekeeping seems to struggle sometimes in keeping up with the overall high quality (please note there's nothing wrong with the hygiëne!).

Overall assessment can only be excellent and that good I decided to write my first Tripadvisor assessment for it. We hope to be able to revisit soon!

To be honest, my view of Borgo Pignano may be a little bit biased; I'd found the place through WWOOF, and worked the fields on exchange for room, board, and food. And to say that I felt like the luckiest person alive, to merely pull weeds on a tuscan hillside for 6 hours, in exchange for a banquet of food picked from those very hills that morning, with our own personal Bicchieri of local Sangiovese wine provided at every meal...and then nap, stroll around the gorgeous grounds of the villa, relax in the breezy library with views to the hill town of Volterra, before dinner and another few glasses of young red. Are you kidding me? Why the hell did I ever leave? Of course, the wwoofer accommodations were a bit "Spartan", but free! The sense of community here is also very central to the philosophy of Pignano, and it was alive with artists, chefs, and families with a shared progressive vision of sustainability. I don't know if they still work with Wwoof, but I certainly would return and be a paying guest in this Tuscan paradise.

We are just back from a wedding at Borgo Pignano and have to recommend this beautiful, professional hotel. The estate and villa were beautifully presented and very welcoming. The staff were excellent and really made the venue. I have food intolerance and the staff were very helpful suggesting and bringing me food I could eat. The wedding was very well run and absolutely gorgeous. The villa was close to Volterra and the main roads, so easy to get to. We would recommend anyone to visit here and will return!

Room Tip: We stayed in the farm house a few minutes by foot from the main villa and had a lovely room. The far...

We drove here after a long day in Florence and wrestling the rental car company so we were not in the mood to be lost. The only not gushing thing I can say about this property is it can be difficult to find. We arrived late after many calls for directions and the frustration stopped there. They greeted us like we were Kim and Kanye. They had even sent a search party out to find us on the main road. We were the only guests that night in this absolutely gorgeous dreamlike farmhouse. As soon as we could drop our bags into our room, we were met in the dining room, a candle lit table set for us. It was perfect from from the first bite, of what seemed like hundreds to follow to the last with the chef came out and gave us the scoop on the meal, the property and that area of Italy. We ended up playing pool and drinking wine with him late into the night. He is a talent not to be missed food and pool playing. We adore Anthony and would follow him to any restaurant in the world. The next morning we got tours of the property after another incredible breakfast of goodies that were all grown and made on the property...except for the sugar! At Borgo I got some of the best photos from my trip: as a watercolor class came in a shuttle, I realized how truly lucky we were to find this place. If you want an experience that is not a chain hotel, something authentic and full of people who love their jobs and respect the earth and all its gifts...GO HERE.

Fortunately, this secret haven is tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, difficult to find yet worth the journey. A real hidden gem! The reveal as you arrive is fabulous and it just gets better and better. Camilla and her team are amazing and are filled with passion for everything Pignano and the environment. The views are breath taking and the rooms stunning, this is a place to relax and enjoy, the culture here is wonderful and the organically farmed own produce or sourced produce make for wonderful food and drink. Clearly this is a result of a vast amount of love being introduced in the kitchens.

Anthony the head chef changes the menus daily and will always tailor to suit your specific tastes, he really goes the extra mile and is typical mod Michelin Starred restaurants.

My fiancee said it was the best nights sleep she had ever had and we left so relaxed, next time we will go biking, horse riding, walking and possibly get involved with the pottery, yoga and painting….. there is just so much to consider doing….if you want to.

Thank you Pignano, we will be back.

My partner and I spent four amazing days at Borgo Pignano. We arrived very late at night (like midnight) and got horribly lost, but the staff there got us to the hotel by phone and even had snacks for us in our room. Everything was just lovely--the staff were super friendly and helpful, and they actually seem happy if not evolved as people like you are being welcomed into their world for a short moment. The room was gorgeous, the food phenomenal (including the amazing dinners which are truly works of art), and the setting and views incredible. The other guests also were very nice and friendly. The whole vibe was great from start to finish. I would come back gladly and look forward to doing so!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Borgo Pignano is a charming private Tuscan estate on 750 acres of secluded and unspoiled fields, hills, woods and gardens near Volterra and San Gimignano, in the province if Pisa, between Florence and Siena. Pignano’s main building is an eighteenth century villa, surrounded by English gardens, with pristine landscapes that are unchanged from Renaissance times. To the west, a series of hills unfolds towards the sea; to the east, woods and gardens are alive with the song of birds. There are 14 elegantly furnished rooms and suites, some with their original frescos and all with white marble or travertine bathrooms and spectacular views. An elevator serves every floor save the cellar. There are generous public rooms and dining areas and WI-FI is available throughout the villa. On top of the Villa, it is always possible to lodge at the Podere La Fonte, Casa del Lago, the Artists’ house or to rent one of the Borgo’s apartments. The public rooms of the villa include a two-storey ballroom with a terrazzo floor and a balcony; a large library with a fireplace flanked by comfortable sofas; a music room with an antique Bechstein grand; a banquet room in a two hundred year old kitchen, a smaller dining room, a television room, a billiards room, a children’s activity room, a small gym, and a yoga and meditation room. The infinity swimming pool was carved from a limestone quarry on the slope of a hill directly beneath the villa. There is an adjacent outdoor bar and an outdoor shower. Borgo Pignano’s chefs prepare three healthy, authentic Tuscan meals every day, using the freshest local and organic ingredients, which vary by season. Bread, croissants, pizza, and biscotti are baked in our wood- burning oven. Vegetables, oil, grains, honey, and fruit come directly from the property, or from neighboring organic and biodynamic farms. We pay particular attention to the special dietary needs of our guests for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or anti-allergenic menus. ... more   less
