“More than just a pretty view”
Review of Balze Cliffs

Reviewed 7 July 2013

If you are intrigued by the history of this town, be sure to check out these cliffs. Walking along the top you can see fairly well preserved remains of the wall and you can't help but think about all the history that these walls represent. The view from the top was spectacular but there is more to see if you take the steps down and follow the short trail that leads to a stunning view of the cliffs a vantage point just across from them. My husband is not good with heights and he was not too freaked out until we got back up to the top and he saw the spot where we had been standing. It was a little point on the side of the cliff with nothing but a straight vertical drop below.

You don't need to allow a lot of time for this as there are no crowds, lines or tickets. It sits next to a campground and is quite peaceful.

Approaching Volterra through the main road, you start to wonder about remote history, maybe in the prehistoric time or in Etruschi era, when Volterra was almost the only city in Italy and maybe in western Europe. Since that time, Those rocks, cliffs, holes have seen innumerable human events, hidden tragedies and mysterious facts, without altering their terrific aspects and losing their match with the time. And millions of human of all the humanity eras have standed and stared in front of VolterRa.

Ask at the tourist office in the main square to show you the very easy route out to this lovely spot by a campsite overlooking dramatic steep cliffs and the abbey in the distance which apparently you can visit at certain times on Friday-Sunday. Well worth a look and a few shots with the camera.

We walked from Porta all'Arco and didn't see many signposts for pedestrians. Locals were pretty helpful and we found it in the end. Quite a big camp site on top of cliffs and some remains of Etrucan walls. Some good views over country side but I have a feeling The Balze itself can be seen better from roadway below.

Not for those with a fear of heights! The walk along the cliff edge is spectacular (well protected with a fence and lots of warnings) and the views are amazing. It's sad to think the monastery on the edge of the cliff is slowly moving towards destruction-see it before it goes.
