“Charm and Value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2011

Villa Porta all' Arco is in a lovely historic building just outside the main gate to Volterra. The rooms, spacious, airy, and comfortable, are not luxurious, but they ooze charm. The owner treats her guests as if they were family, concerned for their comfort and enjoyment. Her knowledge of the town and surrounding area is vast and helpful. Breakfast was one of the most delicious that we enjoyed anywhere in Italy.
The hotel's location just outside the main gate (a 3- minute walk at the very most) is advantageous. Parking is provided. Thus you are not dragging luggage up the steep streets of Volteraa to reach your hotel.
We recommended this hotel to freinds who also fell in love with it and the owner.

Room Tip: At the rear of the gotel overlooking the valley.

It is strange to write a review for a place we didn't end up staying. Because of sickness in our family, we had to cancel our trip. Antonella was just as prompt and courteous to work with on the needed cancellations as she was on the initial reservations. We look forward to staying at Antontella's in Volterra for the 1398 festival next year!

Very pleasant though not luxurious room with a beautiful view. Pleasant host. Very close to, but not in, the walled city of Volterra. Fabulous breakfasts! A selection of wonderful cakes made by the host's mother, the best ricotta pie I've ever eaten (not sweet!), fruit, cheese, hard cooked eggs, prosciutto, great coffee.

We spent our first night in Italy here. The hotel is a family home of the owner that has been converted into a hotel. The owner is so friendly, helpful and accommodating. The rooms have a lot of character and comfortable. Great views and a short walk into town. We drove and had a very hard time finding the hotel as it was tucked away on a street that was not well marked. We were fine with the walk, but it could be hard for someone with a disability or families. You must walk a short distance on a narrow, busy road then there is a significant number of stairs to climb before you walk straight uphill into the town- fine if you're in shape, but if not, it could be a problem. All in All, we absolutely loved our stay here!

My husband and I recently spent 6 nights in this B&B, which is run by 3 sisters who are very pleasant. The old building is attractive, but on a narrow main road. There are numerous steps to the nearest city Gate, followed by a steep climb into the beautiful city of Volterra. This should have been mentioned on the Website.
We had an attractive room at the back, on the 1st floor, and the views of the Tuscan countryside were stunning. Unfortunately, we were told that a child had broken the telephone; our TV was broken and not replaced during our stay; the shutters didn't work properly and the whole place was poorly maintained.
All hotels these days ask you to conserve energy by not asking for too many fresh towels, so we left them on the towel rail, expecting them to be changed at least once during our stay. They were not. Neither was the bed-linen. (my sheet had the same hole in it all week) The toilet seat screws were loose and I slipped off the seat. This problem was rectified the next day, but as the room was for a disabled person, this bad maintenance was inexcusable. The bidet was a bizarre kind of hosepipe on the wall, with no bowl and no soap. There was almost no water pressure in the shower. The garden hadn't been weeded for ages.
In spite of all this, we weren't offered even a small discount. Altogether very disappointing, especially as it was the most expensive of our 3 hotels and had the worst facilities of any.

Room Tip: Upstairs at the back for good views and no traffic

We stayed here on our roundtrip through Italy (I admit we picked this Tuscan hill town because I had read Twilight and couldn't help myself). We got more than we expected!
This Tuscan villa was beautiful, and had lots of athmosphere. Our room was large, clean, and cool even in the summer heat. Breakfast was served outside in the garden and was excellent. Parking is free in an enclosed courtyard and the hotel is close and convenient to town and a modern shopping center with a great laundramat--all within walking distance.
But what really makes the hotel special is the host--what a nice, helpful lady. She shared with us the history of the house. She helped us park, gave us lots of tips and advice and even helped us map out the next leg of our trip. Definitely recommend!
The only caution--the turn off from the road is sharp and easy to miss--
By the way, Volterra was not at all the tourist trap we expected, but a sleepy, charming little town. Don't miss watching the sunset from the city wall.

We stayed here in March 2011, our room was a good size and very clean, not the room I had requested in my booking request, and we had made the hotel aware it was our wedding stay.. The room opposite had its bathroom where our headboard was, so every time someone flushed or used the bathroom we could hear.
The owner Antonella is lovely, very friendly, but no staff actualy live at the hotel, so when some guests got locked out and could not get in the early hours of the morning, it took a hotel visitor to let the drunk couple in and most of the hotel was then awake. The breakfast was good by Italian standards, with a selection of fruit, yogurt, cold meats, sometimes cheese and a lovley selection of cakes. The hotel is not far from the main Volterra walls, with a short walk along a main road and up a small hill, around 10mins in total. Excellent to be able to park at hotel as parking in Volterra can be tricky! We would stay again, but may try and get the room opposite ours! Over all friendly hotel but with limited English spoken.
