“A perfect getaway location”
Reviewed 26 July 2008

I treated my wife to the Andrea Bocelli Concert at Lajatico, near Volterra on 20th July. We arrived at Villa Rioddi on the 17th - which I discovered by netsurfing - and found that it surpassed my expectations in all aspects. The quality and cleanliness of the accommodation, the very friendly (but not in-your-face) hosts, the excellent breakfasts and the relaxing pool area all combined to make a perfect break. We have been to Italy several times before (hotels, agriturismo, allbergo and rented villa) - following this trip I can honestly say that this is the best place I have stayed in. Upon departure after 6 days I was were asked to suggest improvements - the only thing I came up with was for more english-speaking channels on the TV system....but then what were we there for - definitley not to watch TV. However I did prize myself away from the pool to watch the German Grand Prix on Rai Uno- with a fine bottle of Vin Nobile de Multipulciano Reserva and the Hostess's husband for company - no english spoken - but lots of gestures and noise!

My husband and I just returned from a stay in Tuscany at the Villa Rioddi, and I can't say enough about this hotel.

The staff are warm, friendly, inviting, and very accommodating.

The level of cleanliness was at or better than any five-star hotel.

The buffet breakfast left us amazed on each day of our stay, and the freshness of all the food made us realize how much we have been missing out on truly fresh, unaltered food. Daily were fresh tomatoes, apples, plums, and other assorted fruits straight from their yard.

The hotel is situated in the small town of Volterra, and truly offered a peaceful and secluded place to stay, with incredible views of the countryside. A car is necessary if you want to truly experience the entire area.

I would definitely recommend this truly unique hotel to others; and we are looking forward to another stay with this hotel in the future.

We stayed a week in Villa Rioddi, was recomended to us and stood up to the standards expected by far.

The staff / owners were very friendly, explained clearly how to move around the area (Volterra and Toscana) by any means of transport, places to visit, restaurants, etc.
At our arrival there were 2 rooms available and we were given the chance to see them both and choose. We were also helped with suitcases.

Room was spacious, very clean and with all facilities.

Breakfast was included and very nice. Staff was very friendly and gave a very kind atmosphere.

Hotel is well located though you need the car to get to Volterra.

It is a very good choice and we will definitively recommend it.

Loved it, we had the apartment which was big enough for husband me and my two year old.The kitchen was great. All clean and comfortable.

The beds were hard, but it didn't stop us sleeping.

The place was quite with a great pool and gardens, the view is amazing. You need a car to get up to Volterra it is too far to walk.

Restaurants to try Del Ducca and Dom Beta..truffles +++

Breakfast is good, and the hospitality fine. No problems, we would go back again.

Nice staff, OK rooms, good facility. A bit down from the actual town of Volterra, though. There's supposed to be a steep passage that leads upwards to town, but we drove up. Also we had some difficulties finding the place. But Volterra is fantastic, with its location on a mountain top, basically. You might find accomodation within the actual city. Car parking shouldn't be a problem as there's five of six parking lots for public use (some free, some cost money).

Stayed for a week in the apartment. This hotel is run by the son of the owner but not very well. The mother does the breakfast and the father - i am not sure what he does.

Some problems.

When we arrived we did not get a good feel. The carpark is a bit of a building site and there was absolute chaos in the bar area where you think you should go for the reception.

The reception area is upstairs although there is nothing to tell you this.

The reception desk was extremely untidy and the owner who took our details was a bit strange. He had obviously had a speech for things to do in the area and went on and on and on. We interrupted him a couple of times to say we had stayed in Volterra before but this didnt stop him.

He showed us to our apartment but didnt offer to help with luggage and disappeared.

The apartment is better than on the pictures on the website but is not particularly clean. The table, loungers, and chairs on the balcony have never been cleaned and need throwing out. The view from the balcony is great.

One word of warning the oven hob is gas but there is no ignition so you need a lighter to light it. Also be careful since it was easy to leave the gas on when it is not lit.

The apartment is only cleaned at the end of the week and towels, which are the very thin ones are never replaced (so try to get some from the cleaners trolley!)

The TV room/bar is not staffed, is dark and has too many dingy chairs.

There is internet acess either using their comp or wireless.

The outside areas are very poor and need a good brush and sort out.

The pool area also needs sorting out - upturned chairs and tables were never moved. Loungers were left wherever they had been left the previous day.

This place could be fantastic but is run by people who dont know what they are doing.

Early Sept. visit with great views, nice building, nice size room, bathroom ok, good breakfast, helpful owners/operators, very clean, computer available for e-mails and such. One BIG thing wrong with it was the beds were the hardest we had in Italy and the pillows were like sacks of cement. We woke up sore all over and shortened our visit. Would not stay there again, it more than rivaled Mexico in the bad bed department. They haven't gotten the word about good beds, I guess. Also the pool was very cold and no one used it. Beautiful to look at.
