“Wonderful location on Lake Garda”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2012

The over-riding best feature of this hotel is its postion. It is situated by the very picturesque inner harbour of Desenzano with restaurants and shops right on its doorstep. Because of this wonderful location there is no parking at the hotel, but the hotel have an arrangement with a nearby (around 400 metres away) car park. We travelled with my husband's elderly mother who has walking difficulties, but there was no problem collecting the car and then picking her up outside the hotel door. The car park costs 9 euros a day.Rooms were compact but clean and comfortable and have everything you need for a pleasant stay. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality and can be taken either inside or outside overlooking the harbour. Desenzano is a good base for touring Lake Garda, either by car or by boat, as there are regular ferry services to the major towns on the lake. All in all we were delighted with this resort and the Hotel Piroscafo and we would love to return.

Room Tip: Pick a room overlooking the harbour. The view is great and although among busy restaurants we were n...

We loved our stay at Hotel Piroscafo! The hotel is a quick taxi ride from the Desenzano train station, and is perfectly located on the inner harbor of Lake Garda. The ferry to other lake locations is a 5-minute walk. Our room included access to a terrace overlooking the harbor, with tables and chairs to enjoy the sun and the view. The room was fairly small, but comfortable. The front desk staff were welcoming and very helpful. Breakfast could be eaten inside, but we preferred the outside tables overlooking the harbor. Food was plentiful and varied. We would love to return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with terrace access.

Arrived in Desenzano without a booking & walked up to this hotel because of its location. Received a room with a view for a reasonable 115 Euros. Room was clean, had air con, small en-suite, and small balcony overlooking the inner harbour. Free wifi (ask for a code). Breakfast was good -- yoghurt, cereals, breads, meats, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, juices. We relaxed over breakfast for a couple of hours, sitting outside, enjoying the view, the cool morning, and the unlimited macchiato's.

This hotel is actually pictured on postcards sold in town (which feature the harbour & boats).

Of special note was the very helpful front desk staff. We were traveling with bicycles and needed to store them. Rather than cart them up to our room (where they wouldn't have fit well anyway), the woman at the front desk took us around back & opened up a secure storage room.

As with most of the reviewers we found the location is hard to beat. Right in the heart of Desenzano, busy and vibrant during the day and relaxed at night (unless Italy have beaten Germany in the Semi Final of the European Cup!). This is a great place to base yourself for a holiday in Lake Garda.

The staff were all helpful and friendly. Even if your Italian was is too good I think the locals appreciate the effort and we found them welcoming and happy to help. The local bars and restaurants were all a good standard and we had plenty to choose from.

We had a room at the back which was quiet and a really good size but basic as are all the rooms. The green tiling in the bathroom was a touch "retro" but quirky and not offensive; the room was very clean and maintained that way by the cleaning staff who certainly were thorough.

To sum up - A great basic hotel in a great location.

Room Tip: Back rooms are bigger than those at the front with balconies but there is no view. However if you re...

Stayed at this family run hotel for 5 nights in June.

Without a doubt the main plus factor is its location - right by the inner harbour. It was a joy to have breakfast on the covered terrace by the harbour every morning. The breakfast is limited, but adequate.

Our room was on the first floor, but despite this not not noisy. The room is somewhat basic, but again adequate. The staff friendly and approachable.

Being based n the cente of Desenzano there is plenty of choice for restaurants, from snack bars to
top class restaurants (although here is a preponderance of fish on most menus)

Desenzano is a great base for exploring Garda. We arrived from Milan by train, and it was an easy walk straight down the hill to the hotel, which is signposted. In retrospect the decision to walk the reverse trip in 34 degree heat was not the best!

We were delighted with our choice of the Piroscafo, and would efnitely go back.

Just returned from a week at the Piroscafo. What a delight - this is the hotel if you want a genuine welcome.
The rooms were simple but had all the facilities you would require. We had rooms with a balcony overlooking the inner courtyard. They were serviced daily and spotlessly clean.
There is a sun terrace and a comfortable lounge. The breakfast can be served outside overlooking the old harbour.
All the staff are delightful. Anna the receptionist and the owner Alberto were particularly helpful. He kindly booked us an evening meal at the Casina Capuzza a vineyard near Sirmione. We had been there before but were charged €50.each way for the taxi. Alberto booked a taxi and it was €20. Tourist beware.

We have stayed in many hotels ,so many are impersonal but not at the Piroscafo. We would really recommend this hotel for a comfortable and welcomimg stay

We arrived in Desenzano by train and a 10 minute walk down hill to the lake, look out for the harbour and the hotel is very easy to find. The setting is beautiful with the small harbour in front of you and the lake just across the road. After reading reviews we booked this hotel for 3 nights at the end of March. Lake Garda is some where I have always wanted to go and at this time of year, not too sure of the weather, we packed a few jumpers, rain coats and warm hats. However, we wished we had brought shorts and cool shirts. The weather was very warm and the sun shone all the time we were there, making the lake very picturesque.
The hotel was lovely, very simple double room on the second floor, clean and modern style bathroom. We were overlooking the side of the hotel so did not have any view, so if you want a harbour view with balcony you may need to pay extra for this. Breakfast is an all you can eat continental style buffet with the restaurant overlooking the harbour. The staff were very friendly and always acknowledged you as you entered or left the hotel.
Absolutely loved Lake Garda and would definitely go again. We were one week short of the spring timetable for the boats so there was a restricted service but we did manage to visit some lovely towns on the ferry. Travelled to Sirmione, Bardolino and Garda. Travelling on the ferries is easy and by following the timetable these towns can all be visited in one day. Bardolino is famous for its wine so we arrived there late morning, did a little food and wine shopping and then walked along the lake pathway to Garda (about 3K) stopping on route for a cheese, bread and wine picnic along side the lake edge, absolutely lovely.
Desenzano is a beautiful town, just how you would visualise a small Italian town to be. Loads of places to eat, drink and shop but still able to keep that typical Italian feeling.
Would definitely go again, possibly same time of year. I can imagine that August would be very busy, but even in March the weather and the lake made for a perfect relaxing holiday

Room Tip: may need to book a balcony room if you need a view

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The ownership and the management of the Hotel Piroscafo by the Segattini family originates at the early part of the last century. At that time transport on the lake was by sailboats which could enter into the harbour. Travellers found accommodation and food in the hostelry known as Locanda Stella. The final renovation of the building was carried out at the start of the 1980's and the business took on the present characteristics, that of an hotel in a central location with a view of the quaint old harbour. It is of particular delight to those visitors who wish to stay in the traditional centre of Desenzano, taking advantage of the comforts that only the centre can offer: proximity to shops, restaurants and bars, the port and the other amenities of a typical small lakeside town. From the terrace on the first floor one has a privileged view of the main square of the town and guests may relax or sun bathe there, taking advantage of the bar service or the shows and concerts organised by the town council in the evenings during summer. The Hotel is equipped with a lift that serves nearly all rooms: only a few rooms need to be accessed by the stairs. The rooms are soberly furnished with modern and linear furnishings, equipped with colour SAT TV, direct telephone line, safe, air conditioning and internet Wi-Fi connection. All rooms are equipped with private bathroom, with shower or bath tube and hairdryer. Some have a small exclusive balcony with view on the harbour or direct access to the communal terrace situated on the first floor, and they could be booked on request. ... more   less
