This was our first visit to Italy and we were very impressed with the hotel. The whole place was spotlessly clean and we had a lovely room with balcony on the second floor, probably the best hotel room we have stayed in. The complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch and was appreciated. We were in a GRJ group and we were well catered for. I would have liked the menu to have included some local dishes but the food was very good. The staff were very helpful and courteous and the hotel was run with military precision by the lady owner who seemed always to be there. She was a bit scary to be honest and could have been a bit more friendly and welcoming. Like others, I was disappointed that a 4 star hotel did not offer hot food every day but there were some lovely restaurants in Desenzano. Location was excellent near the station. The siting of the swimming pool outside the hotel entrance was a bit odd and too public for my liking. It seems like it was a bit of an afterthought. Overall, a lovely hotel and we may return some time. Recommended.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms were very quiet.

Dear Madame,

thank you so much for all the compliments and critics you wrote about us in your review,
we appreciated a lot the fact that you decided to inscribe yourself on Trip-advisor site, expressly
to make the “Hotel Desenzano” feed back, we all probably meant a lot to you during your holiday,
if you thought that we were deserving a spent of your precious time.
The “cleaning” subject is a prerogative of our loved Madame Gigliola, who seems to be a bit military sergeant when she speak with us employees but, believe me that in reality, on the contrary, she is a very nice person much more human and sensitive and correct than other people who regularly smiling but honestly that smile is a fake one.
We’re very glad that you recognized the positive aspects and values of the hotel Desenzano as for example the spotlessly cleaning, the location close to the train station, as well as our renovated rooms designed and furnished with modern fresh style, our balconies everywhere, the tasty red wine bottle offered by our management.
As far as concerns the food, we wonder what you mean with “local dishes” because Madame Gigliola personally supervises the choice and the cooking of all meals at the restaurant, with her long-life passion for the food, with the aim of being absolutely sure that all plates which come out of the kitchen would be fresh, seasonal and local.

We can understand that you were a little 'disappointed with the closure of our restaurant on Tuesday and Friday, but the travel package of your week will not prey dinner at the hotel for the days Tuesday and Friday ... being our restaurant open only for groups and conferences, in these two nights of the weekis closed because one of the guests wish to dine in the hotel.

Last but not least, our pool is perhaps a bit 'too small' and in sight, but we assure that in the summer months as this week is very populated and is a true refreshing for our guests.

Best regards

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on a great rail holiday, we found it to be spotlessly clean, and the staff very friendly, the room was first class and the continental breakfast was very nice and had a good variety of food. We stayed in room 220 and could see the lake in the distance from the balcony. It was a present 10 minute walk to the breathtaking lake Garda. We had no evening meals in the hotel , deciding to take advantage of the many local restaurants.

Thank you very much for the comment here for our hotel. It's always a pleasure for us to read positive thoughts of our customers

Even if you have not taken dinners at our restaurant, we are pleased that you enjoyed our breakfast buffet.

We travelled with Great Rail Journeys and stayed for seven nights in May. We found the food quality to be excellent (if a little too English on a couple of occasions) with a good selection of dishes all very well cooked and presented, we especially enjoyed the pasta dishes. The buffet breakfast was really great with a comprehensive selection of dishes and always a waiter to serve your tea or coffee.

our bedroom was a very good size and, apart from the lack of power points, was really splendid with a good sized bathroom and nicely furnished.

The terraces are great with lovely views across to the lake and a great place to be when the sun shines.

The public room are really well presented and we felt very at ease and comfortable when relaxing around the bar and lounge.

Best thing of all here are the staff who are so very friendly and helpful and nothing seems too much trouble, special thanks to Tony Scaglia, Giocomo and Guiseppe for making our stay really fantastic, many thanks to them.

When we return to Lake Garda this would be our hotel of choice with the only negative being, unless you are travelling in a group then you cannot eat dinner at the hotel, which is sad because their kitchens produce some excellent food. Maybe in the future .......?

Do try the Hotel Desenzano when you visit Lake Garda!

Dear Martin,

we appreciated a lot all your comments and compliments, you have been a very elegant, sensitive, objective, smart and smiling gentleman when you were here as much as while writing your comment here on trip advisor.

As far as regards the food, we apologise if it seemed to be a bit too BRITISH on a couple occasions but it was our purpose to introduce you to the Italian way of cooking anyway by maintaining a sort of connection with your tradition, and by the way, believe me that sometimes
other customers were telling us that they would have liked to eat something less ITALIAN and more similar to the UK kitchen.

We try to ACCOMMODATE all people’s gusts, but it’s not always easy and possible, considering the fact that some clients really gradisk only their own English food.

We try our best with passion and profession but it’s also true that this is one of the most difficult job on the planet because human beings are so different one to the other, even if they come from the same country, trust me.

The question of power points, there are 2 plugs on the 2 sides of the bed, another on the left side of the entry door (entrance), another one close to the mini-bar, another couple in the bathroom.
We thank you for underlining the big size of our bathrooms.
We are so kindly impressed that the stuff were able to solve and fix all your “problems, doubts or questions” and that compliment will be the PUNTUAL gift for Tony’s birthday 12 June.

We hope to have the possibility to see you and your wonderful wife here again soon.

Best regards

My partner and I have just returned from a holiday organised by Great Rail Journeys, and I agree entirely with another review just posted "Like it or loathe it" written I am sure by a fellow participant.
This is the first "4 star" hotel I have stayed in where it was not possible to get a dinner every night. I was aware that not all our evening meals were paid for as part of the holiday, but I expected that a dinner would be available any other night at our own cost. This was not the case at all, and the only food on offer at any other time was a toasted cheese and ham sandwich, at 4 euros each, or coffee at the bar - I forget the price of that, but it was not cheap.
The only saving grace with regard to food was the breakfast, which was invariably plentiful, but it was not easy to get hot coffee or tea, mostly only warm.
Who can possibly have graded this as 4 star accommodation. We did not have the unfortunate room experience of your above quoted reviewer, not being over the kitchen, but I do know, from speaking to other guests that the accommodation varied.
Yes, there is a hill up from the town, which could be a problem for people less fit than ourselves, but we are used to that sort of terrain from living in Devon. It was very near the station though.

Dear Guest,
we wanna thank you for the time spent to write those comments about us, anyway critics, either positive or negative, can always help to work better in the future.
At this point we would like to clarify some informations

Our Hotel is located only 500 meters from the historical centre, so to reach shops and boats (at the port) you have to walk down the Cavour Boulevard about 8-10 minutes or take a taxi or a bus (normally under payment).
We are very close to the train station, and this feature is basically important for all clients, because they need to get the trains often as for example to go to Venice or Verona or Padova, Milano, Bergamo and Brescia as far as Peschiera del Garda.

Our kitchen is open only for groups and organized meetings or conferences so considering
that your “Package Great Rail – Simply Garda Lake”
was not including the dinner on 2 predetermined nights, on Tuesday and Friday, also with the purpose to give you the possibility to enjoy one of the 40 restaurants or Pizzerie here in Desenzano, that’s why on those particular evenings our Restaurant was close.
This doesn’t mean that we don’t have all requirements, services and features to be considered and classified as a 4 stars Hotel.

Then we would like to finally specify for you and also for your colleague of the precedent mail, that our hotel is not an “All Inclusive” but is a normal 4 star hotel and then the extra drinks normally should be paid like in all the other world’s hotels.

Regarding the coffee..….we honestly are speechless at the moment….

It’s very sad that all the positive, friendly and nice efforts we did in order to make your holiday unforgettable (bottle wine, cake with Spumante, professionality and so on….), those actions didn’t change your wish of criticizing us in a bad way

We wish anyway a relaxing summer

My wife and I stayed at this hotel as oart of a group on a Great Rail Journey. I have read with interest all the previous reviews and the opinions split between like, or loathe. We have travelled extensively so have some experience of standards. Starting at the beginning, 4* hotel this is not. I can only think that a badly sited outdoor pool, conference facilities and covered parking is what it is based on.
For the area the location is not brilliant. Downhill walk to main town area 10 mins., but when you are tired it is a slog back up. The owner, an elderly lady, was not welcoming and was as miserable as sin for the whole stay. We had times when the weather was not good and there is no comfortable area to relax, no books, games or anything to do. A whole group of us were in for the day on one occasion and no refreshments or sandwiches were offered by way of being customer friendly. Indeed tea for two was charged at 7 Euros! Other drinks were not good value either. This hotel is not run for guest convenience.
Our room 110 was located over the kitchens and was noisey throughout the night, goodness knows what was going on with tables being scrapped along floors and cupboards slamming. I am sure other rooms were not as bad, but it is a lottery as all rooms are not the same. They are clean and very comfortable, but balconies, baths and air conditioning is random.
The food is OK but not brilliant. We were very much herded as a group with very limited choice and had to decide the night or so before. Breakfast was the same each day and no real hot offering.
I note the Manager has made some comments in response to other negative comments and maybe as a Great Rail traveller the cost is cut to the bone, but with some creative effort much more could have been done to make us feel at home and welcome.
Would we stay again, no. Would I recommend to other British tourists, no. This hotel was the big disappointment of our Great Rail Journey.

Room Tip: First can be noisey from kitchen activity. Try and see room before accepting.

Thank you for your comments which we do appreciate and take on board. Hopefully I can clarify a few of your specific points:

Our hotel matches all the standard requirements in our country to be a 4 stars, in terms of service, accommodation and safety/security. It’s a 40 rooms hotel run by our family with passion and every year we renew and update our property.

There is a spacious lobby with bar and TV where people can read or relax while having a drink; prices are in the average with any bar or coffee shop in the area and 3,50 Euros for a tea served with biscuits it’s a fair price overall accepted everywhere.

As we serve meals only for our guests the kitchen staff ends his duty at 10 p.m. After 10 p.m. nobody is working there until the next afternoon and especially nobody in the morning, as we have another office for breakfast, served not in the restaurant but in a different space/ next to the pool.

If you had problem for sleep or you prefer bath tube to shower, you can speak with us at the reception or with your Tour manager, so we provide to change the solution.

All rooms have balconies and air conditioning is off only few hours during the morning when the staff is cleaning the rooms.

We absolutely need to specify that in the period when you were here with Great Rail Journeys, the external temperature was really low down approximately 6 Celsius degrees, and obviously our air-conditioning centralized system had problems to work, by the way, to be honest, some clients pretended us to switch on the heating system, as when it’s winter time.

Regarding food we provide a choice menu every night and a salad bar, on arrival day we prepare a buffet; the menu is changing every day and we use fresh ingredients according to the season. For groups we need to organize the service 1 day ahead as we buy fresh ingredients only in the morning.

Breakfast offers 2 hot choices on buffet and rich offers of bread, croissant, cakes, plum-cakes, pancake, cereals, fresh yoghurts, fruit salads, cheeses, hams, juices, different sort of teas and more as should be in 4 star hotel.

For groups we always offer a welcome drink with appetizers where we introduce ourselves and the destination, we offer a complementary bottle of wine in every room on arrival day and tea and coffee everyday after dinner, and last but not least, the last dinner on Thursday, in order to say Thank-you and Goodbye and also to wish a safe trip back home, we offer an amazing Chantilly Cake with fresh strawberries and Spumante wine flutes.

Sometimes there are guests travelling with groups with different expectation; this has nothing to do with cutting costs but with the awareness of being part of an organized tour and the facilities that a guest is entitled to receive.

We are very upset and sad for all your twisted and not unbiased judgments and overall because all those comments have been done in a disparaging tone, denigrating the efforts done by all our staff, who worked with care and accuracy to guarantee you a pleasant and remarkable stay.
Anyway we feel reassured from the fact that not everybody fortunately shares your feeling after having been here, on the contrary we normally receive a lot of positive compliments, as you can easily read on Trip-advisor.

All guests are welcome in our hotel anytime and we really do our best to give to everybody the highest service, by working everyday with warmth and availability cause we love our profession.

Best Wishes from Hotel Desenzano and The owner, an elderly lady

My wife and I stayed at this lovely hotel for 10 days in August 2010 as part of a "Great Rail Journey" guided tour of Desenzano, Lake Garda, Sirmione, Verona, Isola del Garda and Venice and we had a brilliant time. This is a beautiful, professionally run family hotel in a gorgeous part of Italy. We cannot believe the negative reviews regarding this hotel and the food. We had a very relaxing and comfortable stay and the cuisine was, in our experience, very good with many choices on the evening meal menu and we believe, many of these meals were traditionally home-made on the premises. Whilst a cooked breakfast was not available, there was a vast selection of other good quality and fresh foods, fruits and cereals available every morning and you would have to be extremely fussy not to find something enjoyable for breakfast each day. The staff were very attentive and polite at all times during our stay. We (including a party of 22 other "Great Rail Journey" holiday makers from the U.K.) were also met at the local train station by staff from the hotel who kindly collected all our luggage and transported it to the hotel for us because it happened to be raining at the time of our arrival. If that isn't "customer care", I don't know what is! Our room, the reception area, dining rooms, bar and lounge were very spotlessly clean and nicely decorated and a very good selection of wines, beers and spirits were available from the bar and could be ordered with your evening meals. We would be happy to return to this hotel anytime and, to recommend it to others.
