“Gorgeous!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2012

We stayed at the newly refurbished Stammershalle Hotel one week in July two families, my wife and I with our 11 year old son, and my in-law parents (we are Danish, but i write in English for possible foreign visitors). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and highly recommend the place. The hotel is small, old, wooden and charming, the rooms are comfortable and nicely moidernized, and the sea view form rooms , and the small salon, is fabulous. The owner and other personnel are very friendly and helpful, even if busy as the staff is limited.
The best treat, however, is the Lassen Restaurant. The chef is really excellent (recently won 'best chef in Denmark' prize), his food is creative and beautiful but still delicious and 'easy to eat'. The reommeded wines by the glas were so suberb that we never picked from the otherwise very fine wine list. We dined at other gourmet places on Bornholm (Kadeau. La Port, etc), but did not have better food enywhere; the price is competitive for this quality - in Denmark at least. The menu list is short, however, and after three dinners the options were exhausted (although most dishes could easily be had several times). Half portions are kindly offered for children, but no actual kids menu or dishes, so some parts a bit of a challenge for our son, but at least the bread and butter is fabuolous and plentiful. Also worth mentioning is the very good breakfast buffet, not huge but everything is exquisite, and some items are new each day. No kids issues there....
Pool area is small and the water was not heated, but we did not mind too much. Swimming is possible from the beautiful rocky coast, if not directly inviting, and we did not get around to it. The very good white sand beaches are elsewhere on the island. Bornholm is generally a very nice holiday destination if you like small pittoresque coastal towns, historic buildings, easy hiking in welcoming, pretty landscapes - and good food, and icecream.

Room Tip: Panoramic sea views from no 2, but also most other rooms

We fell in love with the pictures on the hotel's website and booked it without realizing that it was 8 km from Gudhjem. The accommodation wasn't quite as luxurious as the photographs suggest. It was adequate, and rather pleasant away from the hustle and bustle of the towns. The building is very interesting, as is its history: ask about it. It has beautiful views, located near the rocky coastline, and if you're into running, the route to Tejn is glorious.

We didn't have a car so relied on buses, which are fine as long as you don't have to make connections. We missed a connection on one occasion and had to hitch a ride with a local who was used to picking up people who'd missed the bus. It was difficult to get to Svaneke and other parts of the island south of Gudhjem, for which there is no direct bus (not till next year).

Things are rather laid back, and there was no reception one day - people were waiting around for restaurant staff to check them out. Four of us shared a room; we had the use of a lounge area outside our room, but it was so taken over by the other family across the landing, who deposited their clothes, shopping, etc. there, that we didn't feel able to make the most of it. They were also rather loud, and we could hear them clearly from our room.

The food in the restaurant was good. We ate there two nights out of three, and enjoyed the main courses very much, which were excellent and beautifully presented. Desserts were not quite as good. The bread at diiner and at breakfast was good.

Swimming pool wasn't up to much, being outdoors and full of debris - leaves, dead insects, etc.

My wife and I were very pleased with this hotel during our 5-night stay in July. We stayed in suite no 1 which is roomy, nicely decorated , has a view of the ocean (great sun sets) and a large modern bath room with a double shower (including rain shower heads). We also enjoyed using the outdoor swimming pool. On the down side, the main street between Gudhjem and Allinge is in front of the hotel (i.e. between the hotel and the Baltic sea). Overall there is really very little traffic on this road, and it wasn't a big issue for us, but might be for others (especially if you want to sleep with open windows). Also the walls are not too well insulated, so you can hear noise from other guests.
The hotel is not attended at night, only during the day. Our main contact was with Karina, one of 3 hotel managers. Because of the small size of the hotel, the hotel managers do everything from check-in/out, cleaning to waiting in the restaurant. Our experience with the personnel was great - they were very friendly and always helpful with suggestions. The staff speaks Danish, English and German.
The hotel also offers bikes to rent and we used them for 2 days. (My wife didn't like the hills of Bornholm, so we returned the bikes early and the hotel didn't charge us. )
We didn't rent a car and it's quite possible to explore a large section of the island from the hotel on foot, by bike or by bus. There is bus stop right in front of the hotel with a bus leaving about every hour in high season. (We went to Hammershus and Gudhjem by bike, and to Swaneke and Dueodde by bus). Also there are nice walks from the hotel to a stone age grave site, to the Hellingdom cliffs, the Dondal waterfalls and the excellent Museum of Art.
Another excellent feature of the hotel is the restaurant. Without a car (our own choice) you are kind of stuck with it, so we ate there 5 evenings. Fortunately the food and also the ambiance and service was excellent. The only down side was that the menu had 3 appetizers, 3 entrees and 3 desserts - so we had to repeat some choices over the course of the week.
Breakfast was included and was also served in the restaurant as a buffet with lots of choices (multiple breads, cheeses and meats, cereals, joghurts, boiled eggs and juices). Of course, it's a Danish style, not American style breakfast (no pancakes, no fried eggs).

Anther positive was the available free wireless service. There are TVs in the room as well as a communal TV.
