I will be a dissenter here. Yes, it is a large complex with many temple buildings and statues. But we thought the craftsmanship of the old temples in Chiang Mai with the carved wood and mosaic tiles were far superior - and the beautiful temples in Bangkok as well. This is modern and most of the statues are painted cement. It is garish and definitely a display of extreme wealth - the guide kept mentioning how many millions of dollars had been and continue to be donated to build this. We walked around for about 30 minutes and left. It is hot and there is no shade and it is all concrete.

We came here after the sticky waterfalls but we would just go back to Chiang Mai if doing this again.

This hidden gem was the most beautiful, ornate wat we visited on our honeymoon in Thailand! It was MASSIVE, so either plan to spend at least an hour walking around, or resign yourself to not seeing the entire thing. Highly recommend.

A really stunning wat which we only discovered (online) while staying in Chiang Mai, and we immediately decided to make the journey out to Inthakin village in the Mae Taeng District to see it. We chartered a red songthaew (pickup with two bench seats) from the old walled city - at one point we did share it with three monks and their alms bowls who were given a lift by our driver!

We left Chiang Mai at seven in the morning and were at Wat Ban Den by eight - an early start is definitely recommended, as we were some of the first visitors there (it's open from six in the morning) and by nine some tour buses were starting to arrive.

The wat is in a beautiful rural setting with views over fields and hills, and we were immediately struck by both its size and its cleanliness. There are so many temples in Asia where you end up with dirty feet after removing shoes, but this was really well kept and almost gives the impression that it is brand new. Actually, it is fairly new - construction began in the late 1980s, and is still ongoing - but we had the impression that it is very well maintained. Most of the buildings are in traditional Lanna style, but there are some whimsical statues and decorations which border on the fantastical. Salvador Dali would have loved the creatures which are a cross between dragons and elephants!

There is a huge amount to see and much beauty to admire and photograph, which is why I have included quite a few pictures.

We found the toilets (to the left of the entrance) perfectly acceptable, and there is also a small café near the large car park - although the coffee was not very good. Otherwise, it was a memorable experience.
