“Good, but potential to be amazing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2013

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Baroness Lodge and were blown away by the service of the staff. They were accommodating, friendly, remembered our names the first time and nothing was too much. We were shown to our room, which felt like a cabin in the woods with an indoor fireplace, incredible views of the valley from the bedroom, as well as living room and bath! On arrival, we were delivered sparkling wine to our room and each evening a fire was lit for us. We felt very spoilt!
On the downside, the Lodge itself is in need of a little TLC. We were told it is under new management, and is far better than it was a few months ago, however I believe there is still a long road to travel to get it up to scratch to be a top class establishment. And it has the potential to be one. There are maintenance issues such as peeling paint and rotting wood which would be quick to fix, and just needs to be done.
Saying this, the price was certainly kind to our pockets! And I would recommend the Lodge to those looking for a budget-friendly safari experience.

Room Tip: Ask for the 'cabin' room with the bath with a view! (I think it was either room 5 or 8)

We visited the reserve for a day game drive, received a warm welcome from the GM. The fire place created a cosy atmosphere whilst we waited for the guide to arrive.Enjoyed a delightful sandwhich with freshly brewed coffee. The guide were very knowledgeable and informative. The animals were a bit limited, but seing the big five was still a great sight. Will definately return and stay in one of their wonderful rooms.

We spent 5 nights of our honeymoon here and what a treat. Loved the lodge feel and the team really made it feel like home, you weren't bombarded by constant requests to help you but there was always someone close by to answer any questions and serve you if needed.

Love the home cooked food and compliment the management in how they have changed their approach to catering for guests! Staff were friendly and the game drives were informative and allowed you to see most of the game.

Enjoyed the horse back safari quite a bit too (travellers tip, if you aren't used to riding don't do 3 trips in a row ;) ).

One collent is that the water is a little "brown" but bottle water is provided :)

Room Tip: There is a "honeymoon suit" away from the lodge which looks great. Room 1 is large and is...

We stayed 1 night and had 2 rooms. The staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough. The food was delicious and the views of the wildlife and scenery were breathtaking. Our rooms were luxurious and couldn't ask for more. Managed to fit in a game drive and saw all the animals up close. What a magnificent stay! Definitely would recommend it and return.

When we arrived we were stunned by the beauty of the surroundings and we enjoyed the safari trip. The driver was very informative and friendly. Being the only guests in the lodge was ok too. The food was very simple. The staff was nice and helpful. The atmosphere was relaxed and overall we enjoyed our stay. Taking a closer look at the lodge I was dissapointed because it was not well taken care off at all. The chair covers were dirty and we did not realy feel like sitting down on the spotted couches. In the room was a half-taken-down swallow nest and the windows showed all dirt. The rooms themselves were extraordinary and nicely furnished, which I enjoyed a lot. What a shame to let a place like this run down to this extent. Cleanliness is the basic principle of hospitality and like I said, the surroundings itself is stunning. I hope the owner will take a closer look and do something about it - I would love to come back - Anita from Austria

When I booked our 25th anniversary , I requested a romantic room, which we did not get. Whilst there for the weekend, a movie was being filmed , which we did not know about. That quite ruined the atmosphere. The game drive that was offered was spectacular! Game driver was very informative. The package is value for money. But not romantic!

Room Tip: Ask for far from reception

I have to say i was very worried when i had read previous reviews but, we thought we would give it a go and we are so glad we did! It is just beautiful, peaceful, rustic and gorgeous!! The manager was onsite at dinner time she was very pleasent and came over to introduce herself she was lovely and welcoming and keen to please. do not expect to come to a game lodge with clinical rooms and environments, your missing the point! it was purely wonderful and relaxing and our room was gorgeous! we saw all the animals at the park, the ranger made sure he showed us all of them going out of his way which was fantastic, the only animal missing being the elephants which arent at the reserve. i loved the way the animals were outside our rooms in the morning and the food was great, home cooked DO NOT expect restaurant food its not what its about, the only downfall was our shower only had hot water coming out of it - no cold so couldnt use. I hope one day we will be able to return to this fantastic well organised game reserve, if you get the chance to go you really should you wont regret it :)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Our beautiful Plett Accommodation is a historic and charming colonial-style Safari Lodge that was built in early 1800 by Baron Joachim von Plettenberg, an early South African pioneer and conservationist, who used the original, smaller Lodge as his base to explore the then untamed African landscapes. Built from local stone, the Safari Lodge has lost little of its original 'out of Africa' feel and has spectacular views across rolling lawns where zebra and antelope roam freely, to the indigenous forests and majestic Tsitsikamma mountains in the distance. ... more   less
