We travelled with the hotel's own ship - refurbished MS Henrik Ibsen (originally built in 1907!) - all the way to the end of the Telemark Canal. The ship is an adventure in itself, and arriving in Dalen, we saw the hotel as a castle in its own big, green and friendly garden park. Must be one of Norway's largest wooden buildings. And the hotel met all our expectations.

The room was great and luckily without(!) a TV, in the big hall there were two fireplaces, centuries of history in and on the walls and with a huge stained glass ceiling. Besides we found both Ladie's Salon and Gentlemen's Salon, a nice bar and a winter garden for relaxed sitting.

The food was a chapter by itself. We selected a set menu first day and à la carte the next. We had a range from local, regional and national specialities to well known international gourmet dishes. All prepared and served by highly skilled chefs and waiters including the fantastic Hotel Director Peter Kumlin.

In the mountains around the hotel there are numerous possibilities for strolls. We chose the short and challenging: Straight up the mountainn for 45 minutes, up to the point where the famous Rui sisters lived in all their lives. But we also took a flat walk to the nearby lake and river.

Prices are in upper level, but quality and this standard is costly and at the same time it is good value-for-money!

Good memories and we will for sure come back!

I LOVE this hotel. I've stayed here a few times over the past 8 years and it's always been wonderful. The hotel is beautiful and the glass ceiling in the hall is stunning. It's all original (albeit renovated). The staff are always welcoming and the food superb.
The rooms are very comfortable, although sometimes on the smallish side. But they are original too, and very charming, decorated in pretty Norwegian colours.
I have brought a groups here with me each time and they have all loved it too. A very special place.

Room Tip: Ask for a fjord view room is possible - and with balcony.

A magnificent hotel, settled at the end of the Bandak Lake. No TV or radio on the rooms, charming lobby with 2 big fires, English Chesterfield chairs and sofa and a large veranda where you can enjoy the "canal boat" arriving to Dalen. And last, but definitely not least a superb dinner with excellent wines. Expencive? well, that depends on how you look at a stay on a hotell from 1894. Good luck. I think you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We had Number 15 and were pleased

We had a great stay in this fantastic and historical hotel. A calm and quiet historical atmosphere in combination with a delicious dinner made our stay memorable. The piano music in the evening was also nice. Good service and breakfast.

Room Tip: We stayed in a balcony room with garden view, and recommend it. You can hear the sound from the nearby waterfall.
