We stayed over a weekend at the end of January to see the Northern Lights. We arrived at about 8 pm and although we were staying in a cabin they made us some food, even though the kitchen was meant to be closed.

The road from Tromso is ok but in winter is covereed in ice and snow which is difficult at first if you are not used to driving in those conditions.

The cabin was clean and well-equipped. We booked a fisheerman's cottage which had 3 bedrooms, one bathroom, dining kitchen and living room. The views from the cabin across the sea were spectacular. There isn't much to do around there so if you want to do any activites i'd suggest booking them before you go. Even though the weather was stormy there was a lull on our last night and we saw the dancing northern lights which were spectacular. Even if we hadn't seen them I'd recommend the hotel for a relaxing break away from it all. There is also free wifi in the bar.

The hotel is in a great location in a small isolated fishing village on a small island on the arctic ocean coast. It is woth a day or two visit. We stayed in a house on a lagoon by the sea attached to the hotel. It had self catering facilities and a supermarket nearby. The main hotel has a bar and restaurant and is far better than most Arctic places. It is functional but fine and the staff were very helpful. We stayed in early June and survived 18 celsius degree sunshine and blue skies, snow and a hailstrorm all in 12 hours. There are some easy walks (and one quite dangerous one!) around the cliffs and beaches nearby.

4 of us spent 6 nights in a cabin in Sommaroy looking for the Northern Lights. We wanted to stay a little outside of Tromso itself in order to get that cabin experience and get away from the light pollution. We got just what we asked for. Sommaroy is very quiet and isn't for everyone (no pubs, clubs and just one or two restaurants/cafes) but it was a really beautiful and relaxing place.

The cabin was cosy, warm, well kitted out and nicely decorated. The kitchen facilities were very good with all the equipment you need. Between the four of us we paid NOK 1,480 per night (about £165). The lounge had a flat screen tv and so did one of the bedrooms. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant as the (only) grocery shop in Sommaroy is very close and well stocked so we were able to self cater quite comfortably.

The complex has a few cabins and hotel rooms. The hotel rooms are more expensive and seem to be used more for conferences. They were supposed to have a few groups in for conferences but due to bad weather in Norway most of the groups cancelled. So, it was lovely and quiet and we were able to use the hot tub and sauna (which were great - roomy and we pretty much had them to ourselves). However, I got the impression that when they have business groups in the groups book out the sauna/hot tub and you can't use them. It wasn't clear whether you're normally supposed to pay to use the hot tubs either so might be worth asking before you go. The outdoor hot tub was out of action but business groups have to pay to use it (was around £300!) so I'm not sure if you can realistically use it, despite the pictures on the website. I was a bit disappointed as had looked forward to sitting in the outdoor hottub looking up at the sky for the Northern Lights.

Kjell, the manager, was very helpful before and during our stay. He advised us where to wait to watch for the Northern Lights, where to walk and he helped us to arrange a dog sledding day out.

The hotel is an hour from Tromso - it's an easy drive but just far enough that you don't want to do it everyday.

Overall, I'm very happy that we stayed here. We saw the Aurora on 3 of the 6 nights and had a lovely relaxing time. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's looking for a lively or boozy break but I would recommend it to people looking for a peaceful place to look for the Northern Lights. Wrap up warm!

Sommaroy is an island an hour's drive from Tromso. The hotel is a small conference centre with hotel rooms and cottages - one of which we stayed in. Ours was very nice, brand new with three bedrooms plus living room with a full kitchen. Worked perfectly fine for a family of five. We wished only for a larger bathroom. The hotel and restaurant were fairly basic with few extras. There were also few options around - the community is very small. However, the kitchen allowed for self-made options.

This is a place for activities and not beach life although the weather was unusually nice when we were there. With the turquoise water and sandbeaches we were reminded of the tropics - except when swimming. The water could not have been more than 12-13C. There were sand beaches all around with one just outside our cottage. The area is remote - wonderful for hiking and popular with Germans and others who rent boats to catch fish of which there is an abundance. Our trip with a local fisherman gave us plenty of action. We also went whale watching but unfortunately were a little unlucky and saw only a few at a distance.

This is a fantastic place to experience a few days of raw nature both on and off shore. Highly recommended for those who look for experiences off the main track.
