Stayed here one night and couldn't have been happier. Our room though a little small had a great view over the little river at the back of the hotel. Dining room menu was good with some blackboard selections, food was delicious and breakfast more than ample. Lovely little country pub extremely quite during the night.

My husband and I together with my brother and sister In law stayed here for two nights as part of a touring holiday. When we arrived the bar was very busy and only one person to serve drinks, food and deal with arriving guests so we waited a while to be seen, not the young ladies fault! Once she was free she was friendly and welcoming and we were shown to our rooms which were very clean and comfortable. Ours had a lovely view and was quite spacious however the other room was very small, with nowhere to store luggage where it wasn't in the way, also the bathroom wasn't very well laid out. (Also the room had a view over a shed with a radiation danger sign on the door) The staff were very friendly and welcoming and helpful at all times. Evening meals were of a very good standard and served with a smile. Breakfast on the first day was not great, a bit on the cold side and no rolls or pastries as shown on the menu, but the second morning it was perfect! ( was a different chef apparently) the location is beautiful and there is plenty to do in the area. Despite the few minor niggles, we loved our stay and would stay again. I would also recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden at the back

stayed here over night, overall it was a lovely stay.
staff were very welcoming and helpful, the room altough a lttle on the small side and in need of a lick paint was clean and comfortable. lunch was enjoyable as was our evening meal, there was a good selection on the menu very some lovely specials on the black board. Lovely surroundings would certainly stay again.

We arrived on Saturday (24th May 2014) around about 6.30pm after a particularly arduous journey in heavy rain. The welcome we received left a lot to be desired.
We were given the room key and decided to have a couple of drinks in the bar. The first lot of drinks were served with no problem, however when it came to getting a refill it was after a long wait, when the young lady behind the bar finally put her mobile phone down and actually served us.
The third round of drinks then upset the apple cart. We were sat at the bar, with empty glasses, however a total of four other customers who were known to the staff were served before we were even though we had tried to get their attention before the said regulars were even in the building.
The toilet facilities I felt were sadly lacking for a 4* establishment, with only one cramped and not particularly clean ladies toilet.
When we proceeded up to our room it too was cramped with cobwebs all over the ceiling. The electrical sockets were a hazard with extension lead plugged into another extension lead, which would over load the circuit, as well as causing a trip hazard. The curtain pole was fitted that far away from the window that the following morning daylight streamed in with no way of keeping it out. After a 7.5 hour journey the day before, being woken at 5am was not very welcome.
The bathroom didn’t fare any better in that there was a sticky substance which had run down the wall in the bathroom and not cleaned off, and again there were cobwebs on the ceiling.
We regularly travel to this part of the country to visit family and have never been made to feel so uncomfortable, to add insult to injury we paid for the privilege. Not only had we paid for the room we spent £50.00 in the bar on the Saturday evening and a further £55.00 in the restaurant Sunday lunchtime.
Sadly the food offered in the restaurant also left a lot to be desired. The vegetables were plentiful and that is probably the only compliment due. The meat was tasteless, the boasted about homemade Yorkshire puddings burnt, and in general was not to a satisfactory standard. Given our lack of customer service throughout our stay we paid and left but were far from satisfied.
Feedback was requested and given, yet when a response came through details were requested but no apology or recompense was offered. Clearly our custom was not valued, however I will point out that the friendliest member of staff was the cleaner who on Sunday morning was very sociable as she left for the day.

We stopped here on our route up to Alnwick. We found it a very friendly place. The room was not the best lay out or design and the WiFi only works in the bar and there is virtually no mobile system. Although our room didn't have one, the hotel has great views over the adjacent river. The food was excellent, we had our evening meal and breakfast there, well recommended

The Elks Head was simply a perfect location to meet with my family, the hotel was very friendly and had a lovely relaxing atmosphere, the food really good, and the area was great for walking and exploring!
We had a lovely day visiting Vindolanda & Hadrians Wall.... Inspiring us all to do the walk!
Our room was in the extension on the ground floor and was very clean, fresh and comfortable!
I'm sure we will be back and would happily recommend this small hotel for a few days stop over!

Four of us went for lunch today, we've been a few times since our 1st review as the Food is always Sooooooooooo Good ! This time was no exception, really good fresh food well cooked so the Food is still great But......................the service today was appalling.

We ate in the bar and there were 3 Female members of staff who all seemed to prefer to stand behind the bar doing nothing, the only thing they were good at was ignoring us.
We waited over 20 mins for the table to be cleared after we'd finished our mains and then that only happened when I went up to the bar to ask for the Desert Menu.

To be honest the level of service has steadily dropped on each of our visits but the food is so nice we put up with it, I've never left a tip in a long time of eating here now as the staff simply do not deserve one.

In short, Great Food shame about the service !
