“Excellent food and charm”
Reviewed 15 August 2012

This is a lovely hotel - full of charm and interest. The location is great for the ferry and while you can hear the ferry when it's working, it's only during the day and even then only while it's docked. The rooms are charming and if you have a view of the Hardangerfjord, well, it's spectacular. The food here is excellent: don't miss out on the experience.
It's not the biggest hotel with lots of amenities, but this is Norway, not Florida, so quit moaning and enjoy the Scandinavian peace and hospitality.

We spent one night at Utne on our way to Bergen. It is, as other has written a very charming hotel which I hope will continue its operation for many years to come. We had a room towards the back which was very quiet so we were not woken up by the ferry. We very much enjoyed our stay and hope to come back for the apple blossom season next spring.

This is a charming, old hotel, situated by the beautiful Hardangerfjord. The main building is from 1722. We stayed there two nights to attend to a birthday-party in the village of Utne. We got a room at the second floor, the stairs are quite narrow and steep, and could be a problem, but for us it was just charming. The room and bathroom was spotlessly clean, and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom was small. We had dinner Friday night, a three course set menu. The food was excellent. Breakfast was also good, both in quality and quantity. Home made apple and rhubarb-jam and freshly made sveler were available. Friendly service. Anything negative? The price is quite high.

When I walked into the Utne Hotel I squealed with delight inside. I wanted to stay for ever. The little cameos created with the antiques and furniture in each nook were delightful. The staff were extremely nice. The set menu for dinner delicious - and they will come up with another option if you really can't eat something (I wish people would ask and not just moan in their review). The crooked stairs might be daunting, but so so charming. I have only rated 4 simply because I would have liked a robe - the location, right on the fjord is stunning, I wanted to sit in the cute netted windows all day and because of the people-watching also available due to the ferries, a robe would have preserved my modesty ! Utne itself ? Not enough words to describe this wonderful experience. P.s. it is unfair to have to judge sleep quality in my review! It never gets dark in summer so you just have to go with it - take an eye mask if it bothers you ?

Room Tip: Fjord view of course - we had rooms 4 and 13.

We stayed there in June. I had previously stayed there is the 1950s and the 1990s but this was my husband's first visit. The hotel still retains its own distinctive character even though it is not now run by the Blockhus family. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the food is superb. Do not be put off by the lack of choice on the menu - you will love it.As a different stay from the run of the millhotels - it is well worth the money.

If I had tree thumbs, I´d hold them all up for this historic hotel, which was the highlight of our west coast tour!
This was our third time eating here, but the first time staying at the hotel.
From check-in to check-out we were charmed and impressed. The service, our beautiful and clean room (#21, in any picture facing the hotel, it´s on the right over the flags) with the best view, and the FOOD ESPECIALLY was 10/10!
We understood our room (21) to be the only double with that remarkable view--not totally sure--otherwise #22 is a single next to it but can accommodate an extra portable bed. Book early if possible. We booked about 3 weeks in advance.
The manager Kjetil and his staff are so professional without that "stuffy" feeling. The dinner is a sett menu, (although they will of course make arrangements if it doesn´t work with your tastes) veal sirloins done in a fine sauce, lovely asparagus, stuffed mushrooms, delicious roasted potatoes, and an awesome desert tart with local berries! The House´s local cider (hard) is divine!
Kjetil, was there the whole time and is a very likable and eager-to-please local with a great knowledge of the hotel and area. The included breakfast was also well done. Eggs, bacon, local jams and fruit, yummy breakfast cakes.
Yes, the port is across the street, but we ourselves, found it entertaining, when we bothered to notice it at all. Not annoying in our opinion, as the noise from the ferries, comes only a few times an hour and not while sleeping. We actually found it charming to sit on our balcony after breakfast and watch the tourists coming and going.
Utne, while not a bustling town, is so relaxing and picturesque, it´s so wonderful that it has a place like the Utne Hotel where one can take few refreshing breaths and really appreciate the beauty of Hardanger before jumping into the next chapter of vacation stress. (Yes, getting in and out of Utne does take some planning and patience, if you insist on taking ferries instead of driving the picture- perfect and extremely narrow roads into the other gorgeous areas of Hardanger). The helpful tourist info office is just a few doors down if you need ferry times and other travel info.
When we left, the receptionist even filled our water bottles--complete with ice cubes--such a nice touch as we had a long day ahead in the car.
Parking is free, but a few blocks down from the hotel in a lot.
We are already booking our 2012 trip back to Utne!

In the hamlet of Utne, this hotel has been i n continouus operation since 1722. Oposit the ferry harbour, you find this small hotellproviding "country hospitality" and exellent couisine. If you have the time and the opportunity, check inn and enjoy!
