“A bit tired but decent hotel”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

This hotel is OK but not great. The location in the old town is pretty good with easy access to various parts of town. But the hotel is a bit tired and the room was very basic albeit very big. Dinner was very good but breakfast pretty limited.

Rooms reasonably clean and comfortable , and friendly, helpful staff. A lack of bathroom fittings - pegs and shower attachment for instance. Food rather poor overall. Unannounced alterations to dinner menus, frequent 'unavailable' dishes, almost non-existent wine list, and mediocre food preparation - many dishes evidently not freshly prepared immediately before being served. Breakfasts not bad, but very limited and repetitive. A week would be too long for most people.

Room Tip: Rooms with the splendid view of the bay can be noisy: much early morning traffic and street activity...

We came here out of season and all but his hotel had closed. The grand was closing within the week, so we could not expect too much. I would not want to come during the season as I would feel ripped off. The room was large and we were given twin beds as the receptionist said that the double is not really a double. The room was clean and tidy and ok but noisy as on the street. Breakfast was a nightmare for an extra price. All the usual but tasteless and service lousy. The saving grace was the outstanding panoramic view. All in all we were out of town quickly.

It is sometimes hard to know what you are going to get when you reserve a room in a 3 star hotel. For example, we once stayed in a room where someone had scratched off one of the embossed 3 stars on a room guide. While we do not condone vandalism, we could understand the sentiment, as we looked at broken shutters, stained carpet etc.. This was NOT the case with the Grand Hotel de Calvi. Built in the early 20th Century, she retains much of her original elegance. We found the hotel to be well kept, the rooms to be large, clean and comfortable with a HUGE closets, a flat screen T.V. and other modern touches. We had no trouble with things such as hot water. Additionally, there is a large, well appointed sitting room on the ground floor (comfortable for using the complementary WiFi, or having a get together with others) and a restaurant/bar on the top floor with sweeping views of the area. The staff was friendly and helpful, (and PATIENT, despite there being a large number of hiking tour groups and the like who appeared to be VERY demanding.) The location of the hotel could not have been more convenient. It is short walking distance from the train station and convenient to inexpensive parking (although parking is not included in the room price.)

Room Tip: Note: the elevator does not go to the restaurant/bar. We did not need handicapped access so did no...

The only bad hotel of our trip!
We paid a bit more to get a Comfort Room, I would like to ask "what comfort"????

The staff was nice and the hotel is very central, that's about the only nice things I can say.

The bedroom was a good size but small bathroom.
We didn't get cold water from the tap. Cold was hot and hot was burning hot!
When we asked the reception they said that we had to let the water run for 10 MINUTES!!! for it to cool down.
They was no holder for the shower handle, the duvet was so worn out that you could see through, the floor was dirty and there was A LOT of dust under the bed.
The pillow were really flat and the bed linen too big for them.
The fire exits are not well indicated.
There is no miroir big enough for you to the yourself.
The view from the restaurant terasse is nice but only the sun. It's where you take breakfast. Nice view, but bad breakfast.

I could write more, I do have photos to prove my review!

We stayed a week and found the staff very helpful at all times. Rooms were cleaned well. The hotel position was central and convenient for looking around the town and boats in the marina. The hotel has probably seen better days and could do with updating - shower heads were on the taps but had no hook high up for a proper shower. Food was adequate without being memorable, except the view from the restaurant was outstanding. However really good food can be found in nearby streets. If you are a light sleeper, the street cleaner starts before 6.00am at the front of the hotel and even on the higher floors, he is quite noisy! Nice beach only a short stroll away.

The Grand Hotel in Calvi is very central and it is easy to walk to the harbour and the citadel. Little streets nearby are interesting to explore. Our room was clean and a reasonable size. We had dinner in the large, rooftop restaurant and watched a superb sunset turn the nearby mountains a stunning pink before darkness fell. The food was good without being extraordinary. The staff were helpful upon arrival and also when we had to make a very early start for a fight out of Calvi Airport - the taxi was ordered and arrived without fuss. This hotel has been very grand in its heyday - now it is comfortable, welcoming and in a great position for exploring Calvi on foot.
