Hotel Le Roi Theodore
Ranked #5 of 42 Hotels in Porto-Vecchio
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 November 2008

We recently spent four nights at Le Roi Theodore and had a very positive experience. Although the hotel is situated on an unattractive road, near a large supermarket on the outskirts of Porto Vecchio, inside the gate, it is very pleasant. This hotel would make a good base for excursions round the island for anyone with a car. It is not well situated, however, for those without their own means of transport, as taxis seem very hard to obtain in the area.

We had a pleasant, ground-floor room with a terrace. The fixtures and fittings were not first class, but the heating worked well and we had no complaints. The weather during our stay was cold and rainy, but the bar cum library had a warm fire in the evenings and we enjoyed an excellent dinner on two occasions. The food was beautifully presented; served in a polite and timely manner and tasted delicious. Dinner is a little on the expensive side, but was well worth it. All hotel staff were at all times above averagely friendly and helpful.

Our only complaint about this hotel was that breakfast was generally poor and on the last day of our stay, when we tried to get something at the official start-time of 0730, nothing had yet been laid out.

Because it was winter, we did not use the pool or spa facilities or the outdoor leisure area, but everything looked very nice. There are some problems with the interior plasterwork, leading to a few holes here and there and some mouldy corners. This is a common problem with this type of building in a damp climate and I don't think it's indicative of neglect. We saw floors being thoroughly washed every day and all areas of the hotel were clean - just a little run-down in places. We would certainly stay there again.

this a 4 star hotel that's a bit tired. Paid extra for a superior room and it was dismal, smelly and not very close to be anywhere near luxurious. We were expecting to much of the 4 stars it boasted expecting it to be plush . its positioning for a traveller might be perfect being on the outskirts. If you don't mind outlooks onto warehouses and a fly tiping laybye 400 yards down the road .Other neighbors are warehouse shops commercial sites and petrol stations. We got moved to a standard room which was better and then went somewhere else next day {Best Western Calvi .Ace]

We liked the hotel itself - interesting deco and slightly oriental interiors; lovely pool with a unique water feature plus a good location away from the town centre.
But for the first time in our lives we felt unwelcome by the hotel staff. To give you a sample: We asked twice for refilling our minibar - without result. Room cleaners left a ball of hair and dust next to our pillows and if we happen to be in the room while they were working, we were clearly in the way... Going for dinner felt like an unpleasant necessity, only thanks to an extremely impolite and unhelpful head of restaurant staff, who decided to treat us in an unprofessional and disrespectful way for the duration of our stay. Big thanks to the rest of the waiters and waitresses in the restaurant - very good service:)

This hotel is located about 5 minutes by car from Porto Vecchio, close to the main beaches, 20 minutes from Bonifacio and an easy drive to most of the hill towns. The hotel gardens do need some tender loving care for a 4 star hotel, especially in the car park. The room was very nice with a garden terrace facing the pool and the air conditioner worked extremely well. Our room was not on the street side of the hotel (road to Bastia) and was very quiet. Also, pool area was very quiet. Breakfast was good, it is included in the price of the room. The owner of the hotel put a damper on our stay, he was not very friendly, in fact rude! However, the staff of the hotel were very courteous, friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Would I recommend this hotel, yes--for the price and easy access to sights. However, don't expect a typical 4 Star Hotel. We found that in Corsica their hotel ratings did not match the quality of the hotel.

We stayed at "Le Roi Théodore" for 4 nights in June. We had a rather large room on the ground floor with a small terrasse overlooking the pool, as can be expected in a 4-star category hotel like Roi Théodore. Room price (€ 180) was actually not so cheap for what we experienced in spite of low season.
FIrst of all, the main impression was that the hotel itself looked and felt like it had not been maintained for the past 20 years, with many things getting worn out or rusted. The whole place gave an impression to be not so clean or in poor condition like the swimming pools, the gardens and the jacuzzi place. Finally, there was an unpleasant moisture smell in the room which did not go away.
Staff though in large number was rather dull and not so professional, excluding the manager himself who was the only one to be helpful.
Breakfast though included in the room price was rather limited in diversity and quality too, more as you could expect in an Ibis or a Campanile hotel...
The place also boasts a restaurant. The food was good but not cheap (€ 50 per person)and you can eat much better in downtown Porto Vecchio for the same price with more friendly service.
Finally, the location in the outskirts of Porto Vecchio was really disappointing, as the hotel lies just against the highway to Bastia which has non-stop traffic day and night, and the noise can be quite disturbing at night, reminding you more of a stay in a cheap motel lying in the industrial suburb of some dull mid-size city on the mainland than in a paradisiac island such as Corsica.
Hopefully we did not spend more time there, and I would definitely not recommend this hotel for a long stay, especially in the peak season where prices tend to sky-rocket.

We stayed for five nights at Le Roi Theodore in June 2005. As it was still early in the season, the hotel was very quiet during our stay.

Location: The hotel is located on the main road into Porto Vecchio from Bastia, and is about 1.5km outside the centre of Porto Vecchio. It takes 5-10 minutes in the car to travel from the hotel to the centre, and about 30 minutes to walk. Be warned however, there aren't paths as such, and you have to walk along the side of the road at times. However, we did this regularly with no trouble.

Accommodation: Rooms were very spacious with a separate seating area as well as a patio. Bathrooms were clean, and water pressure was good. Our room had a fridge, safe, mini-bar and television (showing mainly French TV).

Facilities: 2 pools - one for swimming, one very shallow. The hotel also has a spa, sauna and fitness suite. There are a range of beauty treatments etc. available as well.

Eating/Drinking: We did not eat in the hotel during our stay, but the menu looked varied. Cost was 10 EUR per person for breakfast, and 30 EUR per person. It was fairly expensive for drinks from the bar and cost 7 EUR for two coffees (compared to about 4 in most bars and restaurants in the area).

Staff: All very helpful and multi-lingual. Many people in Corsica do not speak any English, and my French is not great, so it is best to take a phrasebook. However, all of the staff in the hotel were very helpful.

Cost: 135 EUR per night for the room in June. However, in August this rises to over 300 EUR per night. Reasonable value for June but somewhat overpriced in-season.

PROS: Rooms very spacious, hotel complex peaceful with good facilities. Staff very helpful.

CONS: Best to hire a car (this applies to Corsica as a whole). Expensive during peak times.

Overall: I would stay at this hotel again if I was back in Porto Vecchio. Maybe not in August however!
