Review of Mulhouse Old Town

Mulhouse Old Town

Old Town Mulhouse if very picturesque with its old buildings, cobblestone court yard and streets, old church, museum, restaurants and shops. It is perfect to walk around, take a church tour, and settle down for some excellent wine! The narrow streets and historic buildings make it romantic.

I visited Mulhouse previously about 5 years ago. They have made a great effort to improve the image of the town, with a few pedestrian streets, general cleanliness and efficient public transport. Mulhouse will never be able to compete with some of the other better-known tourist towns in Alsace or in south Germany, but they deserve a mention for doing the best they can.

Mulhouse is surrounded by industry and people would be forgiven for assuming there is nothing to see here -well, apart from the big museums that is. Well those people would be wrong. Mulhouse has preserved an old inner city in the shade of its ugly highrises, and the town hall square is really as lovely as any. A beautiful painted Renaissance town hall stands opposite the neogothic St Etienne church, which has stunning 14th century windows from an older church, the best windows in the Alsace. Sadly it is also a protestant church, and that means that it is almost always closed. Protestants don't trust people the way catholics do. Or maybe they just are not very nice to tourists. Shame. Oh and please, do pronounce Mulhouse as if it's NOT in England. It should be 'Mul-hooooos'. Say it in English and you will not make any friends. Or get served.

We were only stopping here overnight. Mulhouse was nearly totally destroyed during WWII so therefore it has been rebuilt and there are a few older building to see, and they did try and restore it as best as they could
