“This hotel will be 5 star soon.”
Reviewed 20 April 2013

I was upgraded from another sister hotel and we ended up having the best weekend of food and relaxation we have ever encountered.

The food was Michelin star in the waiting, the hotel and restaurant is still family owned, rare in these times of THE CHAIN, the owner is the chef, his wife the elegant greeter and a host of excellent professional waiters recommended great local wines (Rouge from Ottrot itself and Blanc from Klingenden). The food was some of the best in France and hence ... the world. Those scallops mentioned before were served in THE most tasty skillfully blended sauce one can imagine.

This is a TOP hotel and restaurant ... it will never be cheap ... for the best one must pay. Oftentimes you are left feeling underwhelmed, but not here.

The spa is included in the price, a wonderfully elegant swimming pool and jacuzzi await with massaging jets of various strengths in the pool. The wet rooms and dry rooms are intimate and tasteful.

Ottrot is a beautiful part of France and Alsace. Hostellerie des Chateaux is wonderful compliment to its beauty. We recently stayed in a 4 star hotel in Switzerland and we can say that there are 4 stars and there are FOUR stars. This is the best weekend break I can imagine.

Room Tip: Ask for the all inclusive deals with 5 course meals and buffet breakfast.

We just spend a weekend at the hotel and must say that it is one of the worst experiences that I have had in reasoned times. The restaurant is horrible overpriced – when arriving late Friday we wanted something fast and light before hitting the bed. A plate of Scallops 38 € if memory serves me right and a piece of salmon for 36 € - the plate of scallops was in fact three scallops with 4 pieces of blanched vegetable and a small bowl of rice – espresso size bowl. Three times my champagne glass ran dry – which led me to start pouring myself – the hostess dredged in perfume taking away every and any sensory that you might have had of aroma. In short a disaster. Had the dishes been priced at 10/12€ less it would still have been a mediocre performance but more bearable.

The to the room – we had booked a “Junior Suite” for two nights to around 550€ - this is low season in Alsace I might add. This is not exorbitant but still it requires for everything to be ok. Nice to say about the room is the new flat screen TV and the balcony. For the rest the “Junior Suite” is just an oversized room. Most hotels would try to make something out of the space – a small sofa and coffee table – over dimensioned bathroom etc. Here the furniture was a bed, a closet, a desk, a small table, two chairs in a 35 m2 room – leaving everything emotionally cold with waste amounts of space for walking around. The bathroom included a bathtub and shower – both with little water pressure. To that - a separate toilet with paint coming off the seating and a general shabby appearance.

Saturday we went to the spa – this is actually the only thing which is remotely working for the hotel. Nice spa area – in the pool area the fittings are a little shabby – but the overall impression was OK.

Restaurant in the evening was relatively better on the 2nd evening – but with a menu priced at 89€ it has to be perfect – which was not the case – again a lot of the same problems as the evening before.

Breakfast Sunday at 21€ per head was again not very good – a lot of choice but poor quality.
Checking out I was presented with a whopping 1.219€ bill for two mediocre days.

This leads me to the conclusion – I was actually fuming in the car when leaving – the price would have been OK provided that the service was fitting. What got me angry and what I don’t understand about this place:

- Why try to make a fancy “Michelin star type” restaurant – when you so clearly are not capable – fix the simples – fill the glasses when empty – don’t wear tons of perfume – lower the prices to fit the local benchmark - make sure that the service performance is adequate.

- Have you no pride in your work – go to other places in the surrounding and see what they have to offer for less or the same money – (Chevalier Blanc in Lembach is a nice tip).

- The lobby, hallways, corridors are filled with tons of art – the money could have been used to enhance the customer experience.

The place is fake – and is the own fulfilment of the owners hotel/restaurant dream but has no place for the customers in this fantasy.

Take my advice – stay away – you will feel screwed.

Best regards

Thank you for posting your review on Trip Advisor and for staying with us during your visit to Alsace.
We are sorry that your experience with us didn’t seem to meet your expectations.
Your comment regarding your stay is outrageously unkind and as you would say “massively” exaggerated. Actually we are still trying to find what really went wrong during those two days.
First of all I would like to specify that what you call “2 mediocre days at 1219 €” include : Accommodation for 2 nights in a Junior Suite for 2 Adults (we do have smaller and more affordable rooms), 3 bottles of wine that you personally chose (including champagne over a 100 € the bottle), unlimited Spa access for 2 persons for two days, extra treatments at the Spa, 2 breakfast, 2 diner for 2 including 2 tasting menu on the 2nd evening which you personally chose, coffee, water …
Moreover we don’t understand why you didn’t mention any of those problems during your stay, why you choose to eat at our restaurant on the 1st night if you felt it was too expensive (prices are listed everywhere) and why you choose to return their on the 2nd night after testing it and qualifying it: horrible – mediocre and overpriced.
Stating that you didn’t like the food or the room decoration is subjective and we can totally understand that but criticizing the employees’ ability or their pride in their work is cruel. All the employees have outstanding experience in the field, strong educations in Hospitality and most importantly they love people and what they do: our many returning guests and almost all the comments made by real guests all over the Web are a proof of that.
I don’t know what you mean by “this place is fake” but this fake place is an historical monument from the 17th century which has been turned into a hotel for over 40 years thanks to the devotion and the love of many men and women and also thanks to many regular guests who have seen this place evolve in size and in quality of service for the past 40 years and for many years to come.
Criticizing food, decoration, cleanliness, location or even service is fine but criticizing people with such disgrace is a shame. However we will analyze every element of your review in order to improve our guest experience.

Very romantic hotel facilities with wellness and spa. The breakfast is very good, rich selection of pastries and croissants. Service is extremely good. Very romantic ambiance and elegant structure, the decoration is typical of the region. The restaurant is top quality, gourmet menu and wine selections are to be highlighted. The dinner there was an unique romantic experience, I felt like a queen !

A pretty hotel in beautiful Alsace. This hotel is expertly managed with a considerable attention to detail. The staff are friendly, efficient and attentive. Breakfast is excellent, although we found dinner to be a little uninteresting. The discomfort of the upright bench during dinner was overcome with help from the wine list. Our room, we understand, was one of the smaller rooms but was nonetheless well equipped (fast WIFI, small balcony) and comfortable. The hotel has secure underground parking and is well placed for visiting this part of Alsace. Our dogs were made welcome and highly rated the local walks. A place we hope to return to.

We stayed for three nights and were very impressed by the all round experience. I was worried beforehand that the hotel would not be suitable for my two young children. I could not have been more wrong. The service was very attentive and felt special. I would happily stay there again. Very impressed.

Nice hotel but I found it overrated and expensive for what it is. Rooms are pretty basic - make sure you ask for a double bed and reconfirm at the reception at checkin. The rooms need to be redone especially in the older wing. Service is average.
The dinner is good with nice food
Spa is expensive for treatments but nice. Pool is nice and available for all guests.

I have had the luck to stay in several 4 and 5 star places - this doesn't one meet the grade and is too expensive for what it is

We are very happy that you stayed with us on your last trip to Alsace and even more that you enjoyed your dining experience. I'm sorry that you didn't express your feelings during your stay, therefore we would have been able to adjust to your needs: for the double bed for example. Regarding the prices they reflect the economic reality of four stars spa hotel in France. We checked in after cycling over 100 miles from the south. It was pretentious in the best French way so we weren't expecting an earthy experience. But the price and the formality weren't matched by the service or the rooms. The spa was weird...and we are spa junkies. The restaurant was awesome. Yes we'd go back because it's the only high-end game in town. But you'll be disappointed if you're on a budget and expect to have an over the top experience.
