“Excellent restaurant, Le Coligny.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2011

For a warm welcome, great food at a good price with nice wine and good service look no further than Le Coligny.
We stayed at the local camp site "Camping Brantome Peyrelevade" which makes a perfect combination with Le Coligny as it is just a short walk away. Having tried most of the restaurants in Brantome we keep going back to Le Coligny for their varied lunch time meals or their evening menu.

brantome is every bit as pretty as the literature tells us, but of course is overrun by tourists - like us!

the coligny is very well situated on the canal, and though there is a main road outside, the double-glazing was very effective indeed and the a/c worked properly too ..... so off to an excellent start, enhanced by a good sized room which was spotlessly clean with a shower with bundles of hot water

the seating for the hotel restaurant was just over the road abutting the canal - not in winter obviously - but for us, the menu was too basic though no doubt good for families and similar, so we had dinner over the water at charbonnel (qv), which was truly excellent

looking back over, we could see that coligny's restaurant was quite busy BUT if breakfast was anything to go by, they won't have made (m)any fans ....... breakfast was truly horrid with nasty everything from the orange juice, through the croissants and coffee .... nearly everything was left!

We were looking for a short break over the May UK Bank Holiday and discovered the village of Brantôme from an Internet search. It's just under a 2 hour drive from Bordeaux Airport.
Brantôme is marketed as "la Venise du Périgord" but we'd say it's more like Bruges than Venice. The town is small but very pretty, dominated by the Abbey and the Dronne River surrounds the town.
There are only a handful of hotels in Brantôme and Hotel Le Coligny (www.hotel-coligny.fr) appealed as it's rooms had been renovated and the price of 60 Euro per room per night was good. It also has WiFi so not a "faded glory" type of hotel. We also liked the look of the Canoe trip you could book through the hotel as well and booked a package including the canoe via email.
There are 8 rooms in total on 2 floors (4 per floor). 4 face to the front ( and there is a little bit of local traffic noise) and 4 face to the back (no view but quiet) so we made a booking for a top floor room facing the river Dronne. Given the price paid we were a little apprehensive of what we would find but were pleasantly surprised.
The only unusual thing was that in May, the owner is not there all the time so you may have to call him when you arrive and he'll tell you how to get in. Our keys to the room were waiting inside on a side table. Plenty of trust and the feeling that you are really in a small town.
The ground floor is taken up with the restaurant and the rooms are on the two floors above. The hotel was renovated in 2008 according to the owner, but it felt like it was finished this year as it's in excellent and modern condition. The tiling in the bathrooms is very nice and the shower has very good pressure.
There is air-conditioning in the room but it was not working when we were there (apparently it was on the heating setting so we couldn't use the cooling).
Breakfast can be taken for EUR 6.50 and consists of a freshly baked crisp croissant and half a baguette with jams, an orange juice and an excellent coffee. Finding a decent coffee in France is a bit of a mission unless you like espresso so this was well received. You can sit inside or on the pavement in the sun. A few locals also take breakfast here.
The restaurant was only open 2 days when we were staying there and we didn't get a chance to dine there. It does have a good reputation and is not expensive. Tables are available across the road beside the river.
The canoe trip is a really good activity. The full day trip consists of a 9:30am pickup from the hotel, getting equipped and driven upstream to the starting point. You are in the water before 10:30am and gently paddling down the river, you arrive at Brantome at lunchtime for a break. After lunch continue downstream and finish at Chateau Bourdeilles for bus pickup at 5pm. The half day canoe trip starts downstream of Brantome around 1pm and also finishes at Chateau Bourdeilles. Also worth a trip to Font de Gaume caves from Brantome.
There is no free parking provided for the Hotel Guests. There is chargeable meeting parking opposite (between 10am and 7pm) or you can park 50 metres away for free.
Hotel Le Coligny is modern, clean and welcoming. We'd go back.

Room Tip: Top floor room facing the river Dronne
