After a long drive from Caen, arriving mid afternoon, the check in was mercifully efficient, and our car was valet parked with a smile. Our room on the ground floor of the main building overlooked the river and weir, and having been lulled to sleep by the sound of running water we awoke early evening to enjoy a complimentary cocktail in the very cosy and attractive bar, before descending to the riverside restaurant. Unfortunately it was a wet evening and we were unable to enjoy the fantastic food sitting at a table on the patio by the river. However the restaurant is charming, and the service impeccable, all you would expect from a top French restaurant. This is not a cheap hotel, but because of its location and overall standard it is worth the cost. Just wish it had been a fine evening, so we could have enjoyed a drink on the terrace before dinner on the patio by the river. Only criticism is our room was on the small side, but it is a converted mill house!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building, overlooking the river.

This was a beautiful spot after staying at 2 others along the way from Paris to Bordeaux driving. We felt it lived up to the boutique small luxury hotels we expected, and the food in the restaurant was great. My wife had a cold and only wanted something simple to eat for dinner, and the chef and manager both delivered fresh grilled vegetables and fruit personally to her while I dined in the restaurant, having one of the best meals in my life!

Gorgeously situated on a broad stretch of the River Dromme in this exceptionally pretty town of Brantome, a Relais and Chateaux ---- no less, this is perhaps the finest hotel in which my wife and I have stayed, in every respect except one. The rooms are quite diverse in location as well as decoration, since the peninsula on which the main services of the hotel are located has very limited space. Some rooms form part of the main hotel buildings; others are low-rise buildings around a small lagoon; and ours was on the mainland in a complex that formerly was part of the Abbaye de Brantome. They are given the names of distinguished Bordeaux wines, and ours was Chateau Beychevelle. It was truly majestic as well as delightfully comfortable, and was more like a suite, with a hallway, separate toilets and bathrooms, superb furniture, lots of space, and a large array of expensive toiletries, as well as every other appliance and accessory that one expects of a 5-star hotel. The service was exceptional, and included a complimentary “welcome drink”, and a little box of superb chocolates placed on our pillow at night. We had to cross the road to the lobby and reception areas that were quite opulent with plenty of room for all the guests. The dining room is downstairs and looks over the river and the town, and it is there that a very fine continental breakfast is served. Unfortunately, it is also there that we had a very disappointing dinner, billed as Gourmand in our demi-pension package. There were 4 courses preceded by an average array of amuses bouches.
There was no choice for any of the courses. One was Boudin Blanc, and another Boudin Noir. It took a long time to convince the staff that as non-Pork eaters, we deserved alternative dishes. The wine list was outrageously overpriced, with not a single non-French wine, and even then, Alsace was completely unrepresented. It was a far cry from an excellent lunch we had enjoyed about 8 years ago when the establishment was the proud possessor of a Michelin star, now stripped. The message is sleep, eat breakfast, but have dinner elsewhere. I recommend Le Moulin du Roc only 6 Km North where we have twice enjoyed fabulous meals.

Room Tip: Our room was in the annexe and not in the main building where the rooms are very much on the small s...

We only visited the restaurant and had a wonderful time. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was delicious - small portions to get you through the whole meal. On that day it was raining so we had to sit inside however we enjoyed the beautiful view of the river. Would definitely recommend!

Our Superior Double room with garden view did not mention that it was 2 floors up steep narrow stairs and across the road from the main hotel and restaurant we could see the garden but over the road! Diner was very disappointing my fish was seriously undercooked (raw?) and had to be returned to the kitchen my husband had finished his meal before mine was returned. I was unable to have a second glass of wine the same as the first as they only had similar not the same, similar on tasting was very different.
Perhaps we were unlucky that the weather was not good enough to sit outside but surely that

should not have affected the food and wine>
This hotel was not Relais and Chateau standard

We spent the perfect weekend at this most wonderful hotel. We were going to a wedding on the Saturday evening but on Friday evening were treated to a welcome drink by the river followed by a delicous dinner at a table overlooking the river. Everyone who looked after us could not do enough. Our room was so comfortable and at night with the windows open we were lulled to sleep by the sound of the river. Brantome is exquisite and we enjoyed our several visits to the many little shops and coffee bars.
The hotel had arranged our taxi who was professional, on time and extremely polite.
It was one of the best weekend retreats ever and we will certainly be back

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the river. When we go back I will ask for a room with a similar view

We have made quite a few visits over 20 years and this was our first disappointment. The hotel itself and the setting are magical and on all previous visits the service has lived up to that. This time (July 2013) the reception staff were as welcoming and helpful as ever but the bar and restaurant staff simply did not seem to be properly trained. It was a real struggle to get an aperitif and the service in general was sloppy and unwelcoming to the point of discourtesy. The food in the restaurant was not up to previous standards. After the visit we were asked to write a trip report and I first replied to the hotel with the above comments to give them an opportunity to respond but they have not done so which suggests that perhaps they do not care which is also disappointing.
