“Beautiful Inn, Gorgeous Room, Stunning Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2009

This Relais & Chateaux Inn may have the most beautiful site location that we have visited during our forty years together. It is situated along a river that passes through a very small and beautiful town (Brantome) in the Dordogne area of France. Because of our desire for both a tub and a shower, we decided to stay in the Miller House, which overlooks the main Inn/Restaurant and which also has nice views and a limited view of the river. We stayed in Room Number 10 (Giscours), which was fabulous. Housekeeping services were top-notch. Breakfast in their restaurant along the river was wonderful (not included in the room price). There are two issues with this Inn. The first is that it is in the northern part of the Dordogne and not really close to the tourist towns/sites of Lascaux, Sarlat, and Rocamadour, each of which is a "must visit". The second is that the dinner menu is very limited, especially for a Relais property, so anyone staying for more than one day may have a problem with choice. We did send a letter to the General Manager that strongly encouraged daily additions to the base menu and the response was quite positive, but who knows? If these issues don't present a significant concern, we highly recommend this stunning property. Please plan on spending half a day wandering through the very pretty town of Brantome.

Like the previous reviewer I was surprised not to find more reviews of this lovely hotel. Although our room could have done with a little updating (mainly the bathroom) this was more than made up for by exceptionally charming and friendly staff, and the superb location.

The public rooms were cosy and welcoming with lovely viewsof the bridge, the river, and the Abbey. We had a two night package which included dinner and wines- this was excellent and again the restaurant had a lovely view. Breakfast was also good and the package included dinner at a nearby bistro. We thought the whole thing was good value and the service was efficient and personal. Brantome is an ideal place to while away a day or two.

I'm amazed that I'm the first reviewer for a year of this hotel, because I would have thought everyone would rush to the site to praise it to the heights. Perhaps they want to keep it to themselves!
From the start this was perfection. Arrived on a burning hot day, feeling rather frazzled, to have our car keys whipped away by a charming receptionist (we later found it had been valet parked in a lovely cool garage carved out of the rocks opposite the hotel). Our suite (Chateau Latour) was very pleasant but, on opening the windows, became sensational - views of old Brantome, the river with its water gushing over the weir, the bridge with all its gentle activity. Just idyllic. Brantome itself is a dream - a really lovely old French town with some smashing (and reasonably priced) places to eat, many of them on the river.
I digress; back to the room which was well appointed with a very comfortable queen size bed, turned down at night, crisp linens, good towels. The bathroom had lovely Occitaine shower gel, shampoo, handcream, body lotion etc. Shame there wasn't a separate shower but then you can't have everything!
Breakfast on the hotel terrace was absolutely delicious, if a little on the high side (20 euros each) but to be honest, of good quality and well presented and such was the view, one felt it was all good value. The hotel restaurant is exceptional. My husband is not too keen on the type of food served (contemporary cuisine) but managed to content himself with some amazing pan fried foie gras which he pronounced the best he'd ever had. I enjoyed the meal very much indeed and would really recommend splashing out (it is 75 euros a head), but, again, for the excellent and imaginative food, the lovely terrace and spectacular vista - well worth it. Some very expensive wines but some that are reasonably priced too (some nice Margaux) so don't be afraid to have a thorough look through the imposing wine list. The staff are really charming and very happy to give you advice should you need it.
Beautiful lounge off the hotel reception overlooking the river - peaceful with jazz piped discreetly throughout. A lap top in the corner provides guests with an internet connection but in a totally unobtrusive way - in no way did it disturb the very elegant and tasteful atmosphere.
If you are looking for something really really special this is it. I would love to go back and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

We have just arrived from a small trip to the Dordogne, in which for the first time we drove north of Périgueux to beautiful Brantôme, "la Vénise du Périgord Vert".

Le Moulin de l'Abbaye takes its name from its location just facing Brantôme's Abbey, with its terrace leaning over a canal where two gentle waterfalls, ducks, flowers and the watermill create a truly picture-perfect setting (see photos).

We had the "dégustation" package, which included room, dinner, breakfast, parking, a 45 min boat trip in the channels of Brantôme and an interesting visit to the Abbey's back caves.

The room was carefully decorated, had a good quality mattress, flat screen TV with DVD, and wi-fi. The place was completely quiet at night, and the street illumination creates a very romantic atmosphere.

The highlight, however, was the gourmet restaurant, with fantastic food, wine and service.

In short, a dreamlike experience.

Travelling down to the South of France by car is a long way from the UK so we decided to stop over in the Dordogne for a long weekend.

The Moulin de l'Abbaye hotel was the perfect setting for us to see a small part of this beautiful region and in particular the charming village of Brantome.
As soon as we arrived at the hotel, we were made to feel at home and were welcomed personally by the young couple in charge.

We were shown to our room which was in the main building and were delighted by the view of the river and the old village. The sound of the waterwheel outside just added to the charm.
The room was very pretty and in keeping with the traditional setting and also had the comfiest four poster bed! There was a flat sceen TV and DVD player as well, so we had the modern technology in a traditional environment.

In the evening after a wander round the town we decided to dine at one of the hotel's bistrots on the other side of the river called the Fil de l'Eau.
Thanks to the early warm weather we were able sit outside on the terrace and enjoy a summer's evening in May. The young staff at the restaurant were extremely friendly and were obviously used to English speaking guests.
The food was wonderful and we were also impressed by the wine which the waiter recommended. A very enjoyable evening.

On the second night we headed for the Moulin's gourmet restaurant to have a candle light dinner for two. Definately the place to enjoy a romantic moment in France.

All in all, the Moulin is definately a "must" if you're passing through the Dordogne.

Beautiful settings, extraordinary food (with very reasonably-priced local wines too), great service. Worth every penny.
