“Perfect accomodations!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2014

La Maison des Peyrat is the perfect place to stay when visiting the Dordogne region. Perched on a hillside at the edge of town and with a fascinating history dating to the 14th century, this rustic yet up-to-date hotel, with its quiet orchard, comfortable outdoor seating, refreshing swimming pool, cozy lounge, and huge bath tubs, provides a welcome, relaxing respite after a long day of exploring and site-seeing. From travel info to restaurant tips to offering refreshing afternoon drinks to helping us with issues pertaining to our laptop and I-pad, Jean-Marc, the hotel's gracious host and proprietor, was always ready to ensure we had a most enjoyable visit. The hearty breakfast of bread, croissants, fresh yoghurt, jam, and excellent coffee served in the relaxing dining area is worth the extra euros and is great way to begin the day. A beautiful, unspoiled medieval village, Sarlat provides easy access to the regions chateaux's, cliff-side villages, and prehistoric caves.

Positives: reasonable breakfast, if a little expensive; no parking problems; attractive communal areas inside; pleasant staff.
Negatives: Driveway needs attention; general air of neglect outside; Room 2 cramped with uncomfortable bed which was impossible to walk around, and very cheaply furnished. Found out while there that this is the second-cheapest room (80Euro per night excl breakfast) although did not know this when booking. Having checked rates at other hotels in Sarlat while there, this is not particularly competitive. Also, it is a 1km walk to/from town with a fairly steep hill.

The position is fantastic, set in a walnut orchard above Sarlat you are away from the traffic catching a breeze. The long low building sensitively converted oozes character ,the owner is charming and helpful and lovely breakfasts are served under shady trees.
As with all conversions some compromises arrise, our room;No 2; was not large but had a bathroom as big as the bedroom, and the bed was damp.
Whilst the walk into town takes only 10 mins that's downhill, allow double to come back.
Finally the last 100 metres of the road up deteriorate into a cart track that needs attenion. For people driving hire cars, fine. If it's your own take care!
It's still better than a chain motel or an indifferent B&B but it could be perfect.

It's always difficult to find accommodations for a family of four that works for all involved, including two children under 10 years of age, but Maison de Peyrat was just what we needed for our family. First, the proprietor was accommodating in every way. We made reservations by e-mail then had to make a slight change, and there was no hassle at all which added to the casual appeal of the property. The "hotel" is more like a B&B/Farmhouse with a pool and has a very laid back vibe. All of the guests appeared to be there more for relaxation than a rushed vacation -- so much so that when one of my children woke up early one morning, we noticed that no one at the hotel came to breakfast before 8 a.m.

The breakfast, while not inexpensive for the four of us, was well worth it to start everyday in a relaxed mode, with fresh fruit, bread/croissants with jams, and cereal for the children. Sitting under the trees in the morning for the morning meal was far better than going into town. While our French was very poor, the owner could not have been any nicer to our family. We also enjoyed sitting in the shady area out front (the popular place to "WiFi" since the rooms do not have reception) and talking to the other guests.

The swimming pool was nice, not fancy, and ideal for an afternoon dip and for the kids, especially with the summer heat.

The room for four was quirky, with some low ceilings (watch your head, but in all fairness Jean-Marc warned us) but comfortable in every way. Even though we left the windows partially open, our room was quiet enough that my wife and children managed to sleep late several mornings without waking up.

We walked to town a couple of times, and yes it took about ten minutes and was uphill coming back, but it was much easier than finding parking during the markets and during the dinner hours.

Finding it was a challenge, so if you go...Sarlat basically has one road in from each direction, and you can circle the town on these two roads. Coming from Perigueux you will need to go past the center of town and circle back since the best route to the hotel was a one way road (the road from Bergerac.) As you approach the center of town there are small city signs that point the direction to the right of many hotels including this one. Take a left at the public garden and just when you get to the end of the garden wall you need to take a sharp almost backwards turn to the right and follow the signs up the hill. I hope this helps someone find it.

Sarlat was a great base for the Dordogne area and this hotel is the perfect base to be in the countryside but near everything there is to do in this region. It would be great if we could find "hotels" like this everywhere we go on vacation.

We stayed here for three days and liked it's rather ramshackle charm. It's characterful - imagine a chain motel and this is precisely the opposite. The room is small but comfortable and some are in the more ancient parts of the building. We enjoyed the pool for cooling off. The owner is pretty much a one-man band but also omnipresent. He got us a table at a great restaurant on a Friday night at very short notice and saw it as a matter of honour to do so! The breakfasts were fresh and tasty and could be eaten indoors or on the terrace as preferred. The walk to the town takes about 10 minutes but is hilly - not for the infirm. Just far enough to escape the hullabaloo but easy to get down to the market (don't miss this by the way). I'd return and it's good value.

Room Tip: Try one of the older rooms for real rustic charm

No need to repeat what the website and the other reviews say yet one more time. It's a great place to relax and stretch out after crowded Sarlat town. Yes, sound carries between rooms, and the bathrooms though completely fine lack the finesse of some of the others we saw. But at the price, who cares? Good free wifi.
Two things to be aware of. It's not trivial to get to by car. The website has GPS coordinates and a google map, but one ways are not marked. If you're in Sarlat, leave NE by Rue Jean Jaures, right on Jean Moulin, left on Rue de la Plane (the last one in particular is poorly signposted). Leaving, you go the other way on Jean Moulin and then right on Chemin des Monges. Second, while we thoroughly enjoyed walking to dinner in Sarlat town - a 10 min walk - it is down a fairly steep hill and people with mobility issues will need to drive.
A very enjoyable stay.

We stayed at maison des peyrat for two nights while in the dordogne region. We booked here because of the excellent reviews and after seeing pictures of the tastefully designed rooms. We were pleasantly surprised as sometimes pictures can be deceptive. Being a two star accommodation we had fairly realistic expectations. The owners have done a fantastic job converting the existing cottage into a simplistic yet comfortable and pleasant rooms. The beds are super comfy! The grounds are beautifully kept, ample parking and a stones throw away from Sarlat town where you can walk to have dinners. The other attractions in the region are also very accessible. We had breakfast one morning which we enjoyed. Philippe is very friendly and helpful with lot of local knowledge to guide you. He was also very patient with us while we asked him thousands of questions!
All in all we definitely recommend this place! Basic comfy stylish rooms and friendly service, couldn't ask for more from a two star place!
