L'Incontournable - Villa de Luxe a Sarlat
Reviewed 20 April 2014

The location is great with a great view on sarlat
The house is large with nice indoor swimming pool sauna and hammam
Nice sitting room and bar ...even if the deco is not exactly my taste
And quite nice owners ...
This is the nice part
Now the painful part .... We pay 150 euros without breakfast for a room for 2 which was hardly 10 square meters and a tiny bathroom , the siink was the smallest I never saw in a bedroom of this price ,
The bed was told to be 140 but looks far less and very short ....
Sincerely this is robbery to pay this price for a closet ... This destroys all the nice points of this house
Finally the bedroom was close to the bar with zero phonic isolation .... So noise till 1h 30 in the morning

Room Tip: Avoid absolutely the violette room Require a room on the first floor

We had mixed feelings about this hotel. For one, it really is a B&B as the family who built it live there and share the facilities. Had this been clearly expressed on any website we may have chosen elsewhere. The family did not really speak a word of English which was fine for us as my rusty French was enough to get by but it could potentially be a drawback for other English only speaking guests. However, the family were really lovely and were extremely passionate about the area and it's vast history. They were more than happy to try and relate this to us in French and advised us on the major points of interest in the area. We arrived via train in Sarlat late in the afternoon and were unable to commandeer a taxi. So we rang them and Francois, the wife, kindly came to the station and picked us up. The facilities were indeed amazing and the view over Sarlat was incredible. We were the only guests staying there and we did feel a little awkward and imposing at times. That said, we really enjoyed touring the region and thanks to some great tips from Yves, the husband, we saw some truly amazing places. The incident that mostly spoiled our experience there was that upon us checking out, Yves told us that they did not have credit card facilities and that we needed to pay in cash. We had definitely not been informed of this at any point and when we booked online, our credit card was accepted, again without any indication of having to pay our bill in cash. I had also taken the trouble of writing a note out in French the night before for them to read in the morning informing them that my card had been cancelled in Rome and could they charge my new card and have the bill prepared for us when we checked out in the morning. They didn't bother to wake us early to let us know they needed cash and when we checked out we really only had 10 mins before we needed to leave and drive two and half hours to Bordeaux airport. We were instantly panicked as our bill had come to 1300 Euros knowing it was unlikely our bank would allow us to withdraw that amount in one day. We speed down to the village in our hire car only to find our fears confirmed. We drove back and tried to see if we could do a wire transfer. Yves didn't know his bank details and had to make a few phone calls to find out where we need to wire the money to. The internet then kept dropping out making it difficult to proceed. At this point, we were supposed to have left 40 minutes ago and were in real danger of missing our plane. I had to explain to Yves in French that we could not wait any longer or we would miss our plane and that it was not our fault as we had been misinformed (or not informed at all) and had we been given some notice we could have made arrangements earlier. I apologised for having to leave without paying and promised him we would pay as soon as we could. He then swore (not directly at us but mostly from frustration) as we hurriedly walked out the door. We then had to speed dangerously down the road to Bordeaux which proved difficult with many geriatric travellers in camper vans making it almost impossible to overtake. It was a miracle that we made our flight and the whole experience left an extremely sour taste in our mouths. We were then harassed via email for payment for the next three weeks of our holiday which was not convenient for us to do until we returned home. Due to this, we would not choose to stay here again, especially given a speeding ticket turned up in the mail three months later. However, this doesn't mean it was an awful place to stay. I think it would be a great getaway for French citizens and and french speaking people. Once they do have credit card facilities available, L'Incontourable would be a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 'Marilyn' which we found to be the nicest.
