We stayed at the Plaza Madeleine as part of an Alumni Group Tour in early October, 2013. The hospitality, quiet, clean, lovely room with gracious windows that opened towards the square below, if you get rooms towards the front. Rear facing rooms look at the pool and patio, ancient rooftops from adjoining buildings. Sarlat is an amazing, preserved town, with the center full of cobbled streets, Medieval and Renaissance squares and impressive churches, ancient buildings now full of restaurants, stores, gift and pate' shops, wine stores and assorted others. The Madeleine has great breakfasts and with our tour, excellent dinners when we were not elsewhere. I can recommend this lovely, small hotel for your stay in the Dordogne region of France.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front look out onto the small memorial park and garden.

We stayed 3 nights in a very nicely decorated room. The bed was big and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and spacious. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We did not park in the hotel's lot as we were out of town most of the time. Parking is free after 6 or 7pm and before 9am. The location is perfect as it is a minute walk from the shops and cafes. There is also a grocery store nearby. The market on Wednesday morning was fantastic. There were so many booths of every kind - fresh vegetables, wine, meat, cheese, nougats, baked goods and even linens. We have never seen so many shops selling foie gras. The restaurants were plentiful as well as bakeries and cafés.

I was last there in 2004 so I knew this was a prime tour group destination. But it's well located and the upgrades are very attractive. Room 303 faces the rear of the building, is very quiet, has an operable window (but only one), and overlooks the hotel pool below and a shaded elementary school play yard across. Never ate meals at the hotel because of the tour groups but there are plenty of lovely restaurants for dinner, and nice cafes for breakfast (after 8-8:30am; before that, not so much). Comfortable bedding, sitting area (no window); bathroom was OK. At checkout discovered we had been billed for daily breakfast and just now discovered they also billed us for daily garage service, neither of which we ever had.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor in rear of building.

We were a group of 28 and stayed at the hotel for a week. The rooms have indeed been upgraded and modernized and even though small were quite adequate. The location of the hotel and quiet in the room is a real plus. The storage for soap and shampoos could be easily remedied in the shower by simply installing a soap holder as using the floor is very inconvenient. The decor is very modern and we agree it does not fit the antiquity of the town.
The breakfasts were average but the attitude (as mentioned in other reviews) of the staff especially Leticia, needs improvement. After a week in the same hotel, the lack of familiarity and welcome was lacking. With a little fine tuning by the owners this obvious delinquency can be improved. We are rating the hotel only 4 stars but this rating reflects the staff and the modern decor only.
