We stayed two nights here in May 2014.

The room was cramped, as usual for Europe, but clean. There was an occasional smell of "drains" in the bathroom.

Location is great, right outside the old town, with free parking across the street.

Breakfast was fine, the usual continental faire.

The proprietor gave us two good recommendations for dinner at local places. He seemed like a good knowledgeable resource.

WiFi connectivity was very poor in our room. Two out of four devices coundnt pick up the signal at all.

Stayed here 2 nights in may 2014. Great location, large clean room, very nice breakfast. Very accommodating about several of our special needs -ice, early checkin etc.
We would recommend without reservation.

Room Tip: We booked larger room which was great!

We were very happy with Hotel Montaigne when we stayed there for 3 days on our 2013 visit to France. Sarlat serves as a perfect location to visit the Dordogne region and this hotel is perfect for walking into the heart of the Sarlat, where everything you want to see is located. It's set a little away from all the hubbub of the center of town, so it offers a quieter sleep and easier parking if you have a car, which we did.

The owners, the Martinats, are quite charming and are always ready to help with anything and made several suggestions which did not disappoint. Their breakfast was very reasonable as well and they ask in advance if you want to partake each day, so they can be prepared, since they set it up themselves. It offered the usual breakfast selections, but was very good.

The room, while not new, was certainly adequate and offered room for our luggage and closet space for our clothes. The bathroom was larger than most in this price range, so I was rather pleased about it.

This hotel's room key is the kind that you need to insert to get electricity in the room, so if you have a problem with that, you should be aware of this feature.

I wanted to do some ironing---if you can believe it----and Mr. Martinat allowed me to iron in their laundry/sundry room, which was really off limits to the guests. I'm not sure if other hotel owners would have done the same, but I was very happy for this accommodation.

Overall, we found the hotel to be charming and the owners a valuable asset to their property.

We were so happy that we chose Sarlat and the Hotel Montaigne as our home base as we traveled throughout the Dordoyne. The hotel is in a great location just two blocks from the old town center. We traveled to St. Cirq Lapopie, Beynac and Rocamadour during the days. We enjoyed returning to Sarlat in the evening and to the many great options for dinner. However, everything in town shut down early. We hung around Wednesday morning for the fabulous market. The hotel was clean, the owners friendly and helpful and the WiFi consistent. Parking was a slight pain. The lot in front of the hotel was free at night but had a pay station during the day. Seems like we were always moving the car or feeding the meter. It was a great choice though. We loved Sarlat and the Hotel Montaigne.

One of our traveling companions wanted to go to Sarlat. We all said yes, but not sure why. Finding a place to stay in Sarlat wasn't easy and we ended up sharing an "apartment" in this hotel. Not sure why it was called an apartment because it was just two bedrooms - each with two twins - and a shared bathroom. The price was right, however, and it was very convenient to town. Sarlat is wonderful, if you aren't grossed out by foie gras. This is the home of foie gras. And it's a wonderful medieval town with a killer Saturday market. The hotel was just fine and the owner very accommodating. The hotel was clean, parking was available, and it is very walkabout into town. The price was good, too.

Room Tip: We stayed right in the front of the hotel and didn't hear a sound all night long.

Most of the reviews seem positive, however the true color of the management shows when there is an issue to resolve, and to that end they are awful. We got to the hotel on a Sunday around 2 pm, after driving 400 km from Tours. To our surprise, the hotel was closed, and according to the note on the door, it would open at 5 pm. The booking was made through Expedia and upon checking the details again, there is no mention of this. So we waited around for 3 hours. When the hotel did open, we were dealing with someone who should not be in the hotel business. He was rude and inconsiderate and unable to accomodate us or making us feel welcome. He kept on mentioning that the hotel website has the Sunday hours. However, the booking was made with Expedia and he could not understand that perhaps Expedia was not given all the hotel info.
This was not a big deal, all he had to do is offer an apology on behalf of the hotel and that would be the end. Instead he had the audacity to ask if we wanted to switch hotels, not that easy in a small town, and of course there would be a charge. Tired and exhausted of this never ending discussion, we took the room. The only plus of the hotel is its location. It is dated. There is no safe or mini bar in the rooms, and the carpeting throughout the hotel gives it a musty odor. I am not stating this because of my experience, that's the hotel. Upon my return home, I checked the hotel website out of curiosity, there is no mention of a 5 pm opening on Sunday. How deplorable.

Room Tip: There is no walk-in shower and the bathtub is elevated from the floor higher than normal. Anyone wi...

We stayed here for a couple nights when we toured the medieval town of Sarlat (a must-see) and the nearby caves with cro-magnon man paintings. The hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station, and sits just outside the old-town (a two-minute walk). It's a pretty good value for the money. The hotel is run by a friendly couple who were very helpful. The room was clean and the bathroom modern. The breakfast was good and the staff are very attentive. We would stay here again.
