We had booked into the Gran Carlina for 2 nights to break up our drive back to the UK. I was particularly looking forward to revisiting Le Mont-Dore where I had learnt to ski on a school trip some 40 years ago and as this hotel promised a decent restaurant it seemed a good choice when booking.
We were slightly apprehensive when we pulled up as it was not a particularly attractive building and the white cement walls were stained and peeling and definitely in need of a coat of paint. The interior decor was interesting: very much set in the '70's .
The receptionist was friendly and welcoming and there was no problem checking in at 2pm. Our room was on the 7th floor and offered a view up the valley towards the ski area although we were unable to appreciate this fully through the low cloud and rain. It was a nice enough room but not exactly spacious. It was impossible to open the sliding door onto the balcony, though again, as it was raining quite heavily we didn't really need to but there was no other means of getting any fresh air into the room as the other window was a fixed pane. This made the quotation from the Little Prince painted on the headboard rather ironic as it spoke of the cool night air and its health giving properties. However it was clean, warm and comfortable and the bathroom had some nice toiletries.
We decided we would eat in the restaurant that night as we had already walked around the town in the rain and found few alternatives and the sample menu in the room sounded good. I know it was early July in a hotel in a ski resort and there was only one other couple in the resident's section of the dining room and two tables occupied in the non-resident's section but disappointment raised its head as we read the menu which bore no resemblance to the one in our room. I chose creme de legumes and filet mignon de porc and I think that the soup was probably out of a carton. The pork was fine but could easily have been a good quality ready meal. My husband's scallops were ok but he was again disappointed first by the size of the portion of his fish curry and then its flavour, edible but just not great. We assumed it was chef's night off or maybe they don't even employ a chef in the low season.
Breakfast the following morning was probably the best part of our stay with a really good selection of cold meats, cheeses, yogurt, pastries, fruit, cereals but no hot food.
It turned out that we needed to leave a day earlier than anticipated and feared we would be charged for 2 nights but this was not the case although it still seemed very expensive in comparison with other places we have stayed.
I think this could be a really nice hotel but does not seem worthy of 4 stars. It is definitely in need of a refurb as, even in the patchy sunshine the next morning the exterior still looked tatty. I hope that in the height of the ski season, in the snow and the sunshine, it is full of happy French families having a wonderful time and enjoying some good food.

I was a little worried after booking this hotel & seeing the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel & it's facilities.

Ok, maybe not a typical 4 star but what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in helpful friendly staff & a great location.

Our room was warm, clean & comfortable, the swimming pool & jacuzzi was good & lovely fire in reception.

The receptionists were extremely helpful & went beyond normal duty to help us. All the staff were very kind & accommodating to our toddler, even providing food outside of regular hours.

The hotel does seem expensive for what it is, but compared with others in the resort it seems comparable.

Mont Dore is a beautiful & unspoilt ski resort, not full of English people eating cheese toasties, and I wouldn't hesitate in coming back to stay here.

In need of maintenance, no shower door, overpriced, they keep the lights switched off leaving one with the impression you are residing in a cave?
