“Well worth visiting”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

A great castle in very good condition, with great views over the town. Good audio guides to tell you all about it in english as all the audio/visual, as you would expect is only in French.

“Lack of information”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Fougeres castle was built between the twelfth and fifteenth century and is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. It consists of a gatehouse complex, a vast lower court with two artillery towers and ruins of a great hall, an upper court with two (!) keeps and a postern gate.

The stronghold can be explored either with a guide, an audio guide or a guidebook. Given this abundance I had expected a lot more from our visit.

Although we were only a small group mainly composed of foreigners the guide spoke very quickly and even ate part of his words, making him hard to understand. He dragged us through the castle in forty five minutes and left us little wiser.

The audio guide is alright but relates the history of Brittany rather than enlighten you about the history and layout of the castle or the lives of its occupants.

The guidebook mainly contains pictures and provides no extra background.

The special effects (sound, film) used in some of the towers have no added value.

On the positive side I should point out that the fortress offers a lot of photo opportunities and a good bookshop.

PS 1 : The best view of the castle itself can be enjoyed from the public garden next to Saint Leonard Church in upper town.

PS 2 : I warmly recommend the guided tour of the village of Fougeres (*****), organized by the tourist office. The tour lasted about ninety minutes and our lady guide proved very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and kind.

“A Serious Defensive Bastion”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

Chateau de Fourgeres is one of the most imposing medieval fortresses that I have visited (and I have seen many of them). It was constructed between the 12th-14th Centuries, and contains imposing walls, moats, crafty entrapment areas to provide killing fields for mowing down invaders, and ramparts to walk on. At the entrance, you are supplied with an automatic audio guide that is keyed to many spots within the fortress. This is a great castle to visit to get a sense of just how dangerous and violent the Middle Ages were.

“Very interesting Medieval Fortress set in the city Centre”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

This is a very well kept castle ruin and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses which makes for a great few hours of exploring. Walk along the walls and explore the towers that all still stand.
They have an English audio tour which is free with your ticket which is very interesting and useful.
They also have a few videos scattered about that you can watch, one of which explains the castle history in great depth and detail. Car parks are very close by, and entry was not that expensive.
