“Cold Water Only Gripe”
Reviewed 1 September 2013 via mobile

A great place for a stop over but lack of hot water at night a disappointment hence not quite top marks. Lots of hot water in morning though. Recommended an excellent local restaurant. Home made jam a bonus at breakfast and the owner delightful.

Be sure to call the hotel up before arrival so they can confirm your booking. I booked through Booking.com and had confirmation, though when we arrived they claimed they had no record of our booking. So instead of having the 2 connecting rooms I had booked - we were all squashed into one room with the kids on the floor. I cannot prove anything, but I think they sold our room to someone turning up a little earlier.
I would have expected some compensation in my bill - but in typical french fashion - they admitted that they had made a mistake and then charged me according to the rack rate for 4 people in one room!!!

hotel is fairly good, but the attitude of the staff let them down!

Room Tip: make sure you call to confirm your booking....

Spent three nights here while my spouse did research at the photography museum/archive. A very welcoming place, convenient to train station and downtown. One reviewer's comment about the huge, soulless apartment buildings is accurate, but the charm of Chalon comes through nonetheless, and La Villa Boucicault reflects that. Laure, the owner/manager is amazing, and she's on top of everything, including excellent directions and suggestions. Breakfast was very good, more than ample, though we'd prefer that it be included, even if room charge were higher. There are ample spots on the grounds to sit, relax, read, and the housekeeping staff are excellent. If we return to Chalon, this is where we'd stay again, no question.

My husband and I, along with our 33 kilo golden doodle (75 pounds) stayed the night here after returning from the south of france. I was a little concerned as we drove up as we were in the middle of the city. This was a haven in the middle. We were greeted warmly not only by our host but a wonderful boxer and two cats. The owner was very accommodating and even suggested we change rooms to downstairs when we told her our dog was nervous about stairs. Every thing was warm, welcoming, clean and pleasant. The owner knew the area and was even able to suggest several restaurant within walking distance which we ate at one and it was wonderful. The room was comfortable and dog friendly with a small enclosed outdoor area to let him out in. Breakfast the next morning was very good and fresh. I walked our dog the next morning and there were several grassy areas close by. We plan on traveling back to the area and would defiantly stay here again as a base to explore the region.

Room Tip: If you have pets downstairs is wonderful.

We stayed at this inn for two nights during a seven-day biking trip through the Burgundy region. We were only planning to stay one night, but had to return for a second night when an unforeseen storm and mountainous terrain forced us to cancel our trek to Autun. The owner was very gracious about our return when we arrived back at the hotel in a very wet and disheveled condition. She washed our cycling clothes, showed us where we could make ourselved some tea, and helped us cancel the hotel reservation we had made for that night in Autun.
It was the best accomation during our trip and we highly recommend it. The owner was kind, warm and helpful. She is also fluent in English (they also have some English magazine subscriptions for guests). The two cats and dog are very friendly and one of the cats was happy to oblige us and hang out in our room!
The room and bathroom were quite large compared to the average French hotel. A shower curtain would have been nice, but the heated towel rack made up for it. Everything was very clean and the decor very original and comfortable.
The breakfast was very nice, and although somewhat expensive (approx. 12 euros) it was comparable in price to the breakfasts in all of the other hotels along our stay. The overall price of the room was a slight bit higher than similar hotels in Burgundy, but it was worth it....(and it was cheaper than similar accomodation in Canada). Hotel is within walking short distance to downtown shops and amenities. There is secure parking for bicycles in a clean locked shed. Note that the hotel check-in is closed for a couple of hours each afternoon.

Stopped over on way down and way back from South of France. Quirky collection of rooms and decor but all immaculately clean. Service unfussy but helpful. Suggest you don't book a room more than you need because all are very comfortable. We didn't need a bath as we prefer showers so could have paid less. Some roadworks and the fact that the hotel does not front the road made the hotel tricky to find but made it without too much trouble. They have a system of three course supper on a tray for 10 euros which was very good value and adequate for the traveller. Breakfast typically French for 11.50 euros. Parking is a bit cheeky at 7 euros but security is a comfort. Very handy for town centre. Will probably go again.

Room Tip: All OK don't pay for a bath if you prefer showers.

This is a fantastic hotel. It is like a large family home with many decorations and even the family dog to give you a friendly welcome. It is reasonably close to the city centre and a short walk to the railway station. Our room was very large. Breakfast was good but not exceptional.
