“A decent overnight stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2013

Having had before, an overnight stay in a Chalons-en-Champagne motel (basic amenities - please see my other reviews), I did not have any high expectations of this hotel which was booked for me by my cousin as a venue for one-night en route from Italy to the UK. I was very pleasantly surprised by this welcoming, attractive and comfortable little hotel. OK, it is on a large, sub-urban retail-park surounded by quite a few motels, restaurants (see my review of the local Chinese restaurant) and industrial units, so the views from the windows are not picturesque but there is adequate parking, it is reasonably quiet and it is very easy to find being not too far from major roads and peage routes.
The decor is very 'Swiss chalet' - all wood panelling and antique (?) agricultural artefacts and there is a comfortable lounge/bar area. Unfortunately this lounge/bar closes at 9pm on a Sunday...and I mean closes completely in that it is shuttered, locked and not even the lounge bit is available for a quiet read/sit/chat ! Well, look on the bright side....you are encouraged to have an early night !!
The rooms are absolutey fine and fit for purpose. Mine was clean, comfortable, reasonably spacious and had a small but absolutely perfect en-suite shower/loo/sink. There is free WiFi and a TV as well as a phone which allows you to set up your own alarm call (there is a charge if you ask the reception to wake you up !). Amazingly (and I know this is characteristically British of me to want this !) there was tea/coffee making facilities (kettle) in the room and the charming receptionist told me that should I want fresh milk for my drink then all I had to do was ask... (providing I asked before 9pm I suppose as the reception closed then !).
Breakfast was great....the usual French fare and plenty of it. I loved the crazy coffee machine which changed colour whilst making your brew (but then, I am easily entertained !!).
All in all a good place to chose for a night or two. I liked it, I recommend it, I would definitely stay there again on my way across that part of Northern Europe.

Room Tip: No air-con but a fan is provided and the windows are secure. If you are likely to be arriving late...

Stayed here on a motorcycle trip. Nice little place. Cool rooms, for one night this is fine. Not a central place but to break the journey to south of France or Southern Europe, this is alright.

There are few places around to eat and drink.

If you're looking for just your basic
Necessities, this is the place. It's small but cozy, the staff are friendly. It's better than some basic chain hotels... Like Ibis!

Very small room, even smaller bathroom. We stayed here en route from Italy to UK - the hotel was well signposted from the main roads, but was located outside the city and so there was no real chance for an evening stroll. It was essentially a motel in a business park and seemed to be a favoured stopover for van drivers. There is no lift, but wi-fi is free. Breakfast OK but ordinary. Only one power point in the room (+ one in bathroom). No hairdryer (not enough room!). I thought it a bit pricey for the very basic accommodation on offer. There is a good restaurant next to the motel.

We stayed here for one night in September. It did the job really. It was on our way to Germany, fairly inexpensive, breakfast was continental, lots of rolls, baguettes, cheese etc and Tetley tea. The rooms were laughingly small but immaculate and we slept well. There was a bar a short walk away although it shut at 8.30pm. We have found this in France so weren't surprised. There was a very good and cheap brasserie next door which reminded me a Little Chef with alcohol although the food was much better and cheaper.
The bar in the hotel was open when we returned at 10.15 or so and was cosy. We were pleased to find somewhere to eat and drink within walking distance and didn't explore the town at all as we had an early start.
Apart from the very small rooms, there is little critism for the price we paid (52 euros per room plus breakfast)

  • Liked — Cheap with food and drink nearby
  • Disliked — There was no lift

We chose this hotel based on its location - outside the city center and central for battlefield sightseeing in the Marne, Argonne and Verdun areas. We were charmed by the website, and appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. However, we hadn't realized we would essentially be in a motel located in what was essentially a commercial park. Our room on the front side of the hotel was noisy (there was a lot of road work and light industrial work going on) and bright (until we discovered the second day that there were shutters that could be closed). We arrived late on a Sunday and there was nothing nearby open for dinner. We were too tired to navigate into town and really not up to a big meal, so we made do with our leftovers from a lunchtime picnic.

The hotel breakfast and reception rooms are cozy and comfortable and the breakfast selection was outstanding. We were in walking distance from a hypermarket (forget which one) so we were able to pick up picnicking supplies each morning for our excursions (no fridge in the room so had to pick up food daily). There were three places to eat in the commercial park, we stuck with the one associated with the hotel, "Le Buffet" which was part of a restaurant chain.- It was not exciting but the prices were reasonable, service was good and it was right next door to the hotel, great after a hard day's tramping around battlefields and cemeteries (we weren't in France for the food!).

The room was SMALL as was the ensuite bathroom. Small shower stall, small bathroom, small room. Then again, we are large-ish and tend to carry too much with us. Fortunately for us the two twin beds were elevated enough that we could stow much of our luggage underneath. This really wasn't too much of a problem as we weren't in the room all day, but it was a logistical challenge packing, unpacking, and getting ready to go out. We didn't find the beds to be very comfortable, they were a bit hard for our tastes. But the room and the hotel were clean, the breakfasts were good, and it was a very good value for the location. We weren't looking for a luxurious place for a splurge, we were looking for comfortable, convienent and clean, and found about 80% of what we needed.

NO elevator - beware if you have a lot of luggage, we were on the third floor which was a bit of a problem. Parking was secure - there was a locked gate at night - and we were not far from the A4.

  • Liked — Location (for traveling to other places) and the breakfast
  • Disliked — Tiny bathroom!
