“Beautiful castle in a charming town!”

One of my favourite trips out of Paris was to Compiegne. There is such a cute little downtown area right by the castle.
The castle wasn’t busy and I felt like we almost had it to ourselves! It’s a beautiful castle with gorgeous gardens. We really took our time exploring it and reading all the information. Audio tours are available if you wish. I would highly recommend visiting this palace and the centre ville of Compiegne.

It is not as magnificent as Versailles but it is, in my opinion, a better alternative to Versailles if you want to spend some quality time without the crowds of Versailles. It is true that the Palace has been rebuilt and the old furniture is gone; BUT, this new furniture and reconstruction dates from 1810 so it has been 208 years from its reconstruction. It has an enormous historical value due to the fact that it was the favorite palace of Napoleon III; during the second Empire. The place is sumptuous without being overwhelming. There are different areas that you can visit but the best part can only be visited with a guide and only in French. There is a nice restaurant but I strongly suggest you to do reservations. The food of the restaurant is superb. (the best Chicken Estragon I have ever had; and the house specialty, the agapèe,a cake made with fruits is delicious); and the service is good (although, I suggest better treatment to the waiters and waitresses, you have an open kitchen, remember that). Definitively, this palace is a nice day trip not only for the building itself but also for the city which is worth to check out.

This building had been rebuilt many times. All original furniture is gone. Nice park and rose garden.

Beautiful grounds for a stroll. Enjoyable museum both for the living quarters of emperor and empress as well as the attached wagon/early car museum.

Another palace! I became aware of its location after visiting the Compiegne City Hall office of Tourism so I decided to visit after my primary visit of the Armistice Museum.

I spent just over an hour and it was worthwhile. I knew nothing about the place before arriving but it turned out to be a location that had Louis XIV and Napoleon connections.

Not as ornate or imposing as Versailles or Fontainebleau nor as busy but worth a visit. Couldn't help but think of the disconnect between the European ruling classes and the "people" of those bygone years.
