“Novotel get it very wrong!”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

This is supposed to be a four star hotel on one of France's premier golfing resorts. It is also in a country that prides itself on the quality and freshness of it's food. And yet the best the hotel could do for breakfast was serve scrambled egg made from powdered egg and offer coffee from a machine that had powdered milk. This just summed up the quality of food that we endured during our stay, and the efficiency of the service that went with it. The staff did their best but there was never enough of them as many flitted between serving behind the bar and waiting in the restaurant. You are left with the feeling that the hotel is trying to save money (or maximise profits) at the expense of some it's customers. For example, despite having a shared room, we had just one tea bag with a single cardboard cup between us. Of course, this doesn't stop the Novotel from charging a small fortune for a beer (when they can get the pump to work) or a gin and tonic (though when they ran out of gin early in the evening, the barman at first refused to get another bottle, and then said it will take him 10 minutes to find a replacement - and even then he failed to find one!). The problem is that the hotel was built and is now managed to cater for company events, conferences and seminars. So if you are there as a normal paying guest (as we were), you aren't really that important. And worse still, you are made to feel that way. Le Golf National is due to host the Ryder Cup in 2018. All I can think is that they will have to knock the hotel down, and give the site to another Hotel operator to rebuild a proper, guest orientated facility. And if you're planning to play golf there in the meantime, find another hotel!!

I was in the same group as drw 1950 and agree entirely with his description of the poor food and service. I found the room quite adequate, but would never choose to eat or drink at the Hotel again. My experience of hotels is based on 40 years experience as an airline pilot.

Twenty of us have just returned from a golf trip, We are all well travelled and as golfers we don't expect or want too much except reasonable food and service. The rooms were functional but no wardrobe or drawers, very odd. Also the toilet in my room had a crack in the bowl and was therefore unhygenic. Breakfast was appalling, reconstituted scrambled egg that would have strained through a sieve, stale bread, cold bacon and all available on dirty plates. We ate in on two nights, a fixed menu first day a smoked salmon and prawn starter followed by a chicken breast that was tough to cut let alone eat and a pudding that I'm still not sure what it was. Day two: luke warm vegetable soup, the only flavour coming from the carraway seeds and plenty of salt and pepper. Main dish a small fillet of bland tasteless fish lying on a bed of onion, courgette, possibly aubourgine with a little carraway /vegetable soup ? jus. Frites had been ordered but arrived served in a cold dish after we had eaten. The sweet was a mass produced strawberry flan which I think had just come out of the freezer. Perhaps worst of all was the lack of beer, and on the first night the bar ran out of gin. The staff we saw tried hard enough, the reception staff were very helpful especially with one of our more accident prone members. If the Ryder Cup is going to be held here in 2018 then this hotel, if it is still here has a long way to go.

We stayed at this Novotel hotel on the way back home from holiday, for just the one night. The building is quite ordinary but there is secured parking very close to the entrance, which is spacious and functional. The staff were very friendly, from the check in staff to the restaurant staff and this made the stay very enjoyable.

The rooms are typical Novotel rooms, functional, clean, small-ish, but with very comfortable beds. For the price, the stay was very good indeed and just what was needed after a long drive - easy check-in, no fuss, decent menu in the restaurant for adults and kids.

I don't know how old the building is, but it was looking quite worn out (although this didn't really affect us) and i guess they will refurbish it for the Ryder Cup?

We stayed here at the end of a family holiday in France in order to see Versailles and Paris. The rooms cost us less than half the price of hotels nearer the palace and were perfectly adequate. This is basically a conference hotel with a golf course attached, but the attraction is that it is quiet and there is lots of greenery.

The food is nothing to write home about. Standard kids menu, I had a strange burger with a bap of tortilla(?), my wife asked for a caesar salad with no anchovies - she got the anchovies in the sauce they squirted on anyway.

Kids were welcomed and there are sofa beds in the rooms. Also there was Xbox in the lobby which seemed popular.

The hotel is about 15 mins drive from Versailles. Get there early (8-ish) and you can park right in front of the palace.

Given that it is on the Ryder Cup golf course, it is surprising that the hotel is so uninspiring. Very odd.

Room Tip: Ask for a golf view away from the lifts
