“Traditional village house with loads of character”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We very much enjoyed staying here and it was an ideal base for touring the area. We were there to pick up our daughter from University but arrived early so we could have 5 days of touring around. August, of course, is the French holiday season, as we discovered on the one and only day we decided to head for Sete and didn't make it because of the traffic jams but the house was always a cool and restful place to return to after a hot day. The village is set in beautiful countryside (vinyards, of course) and is in easy reach of Beziers (nice quiet and interesting place), Narbonne (excellent and interesting), Pezenas (likewise), Carcassonne (EuroDisney!), the Cadoux (fantastic), Tarn Gorges (likewise) and Montpellier (just there to pick up daughted but only 45 mins away). The house itself is on three floors, one room wide, basic decor and facilities but everything one needs: good kitchen/utility equipment, comfortable beds, good supply of hot water, serviceable bathroom and three toilets, one with another shower. Access to all the floors is by a narrow curved stairway so, despite the fact that I thought it rather attractive, it would be very difficult for those with disabilities or restricted movement. The kitchen table is a good place for sitting round but the 'lounge' area attached isn't all that comfortable if you want to watch TV (we didn't but I checked the reception and it was first class on all channels including those in English). My wife thought the downstairs was a bit dark and gloomy but I loved it (maybe because I'm dark and gloomy likewise) because it was a real haven from the sun. The first floor bedrooms and bathroom are fine (some strange 'non-traditional' furnishings but they 'did what was on the tin'!). The top floor bedroom (which it's own loo and shower) was a bit more basic and, though we didn't use it, it was noticeably warmer up there. There was a fan available - just as well, I think. The roof terrace was great for eating out under the stars but, again with bags of character, this is a 'walled' roof so the stars are (apart from the church tower immediately adjacent) about all you can see from it. A cold shower head is on the terrace so this is excellent for a 'skinny cooldown' (no-one would see you!) as the water simply runs off the tiled floor into the drain. Maybe it's just this time of year but the small birds congregating on the roof could be a bit of a problem in terms of droppings. These dry quickly in the sun so sweep off the tiles easily but I recommend 'bird-scaring' tactics at the appropriate times of day (usually mid to late afternoon).
I'm a sucker for old Mediterranean townhouses so I loved it. Those looking for 'villas with pools' won't love it. Being handy for getting to lots of different types of country it isn't really close to anything - unless you like country walks across farmland (yes, I like that too!) and, to be fair, it isn't the sort of place you could hang around in for a couple of days. Its lack of aspect is what gives it character but it's also what makes you get out there and go places. I'd go back a couple more times (at different times of year) to get a better feel for the Languedoc.

Liked best: The character and atmosphere of the house
Liked least: The lounge area doesn't really have any logic to it - difficult area to organise properly

“Very comfortable house at heart of village”

We stayed here both as a holiday let and while our own recently bought house was being restored. It was incredibly convenient, and the owners were very helpful when we needed an extended stay. The house is right under the village church tower, and has real character. - spacious and comfortable, a rather traditional holiday home without frills, but everything we needed.
