“Perfect cycling hotel”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Easy access to iconic mountain climbs plus hotel facilities designed by cyclists for cyclists - perfect.
Having stumbled across this hotel during our recent tour we decided to stay a second night to enjoy the hospitality and very warm welcome extended by the lovely hosts.
Bikes - large secure indoor storage, cleaning & maintenance facilities inc track pumps and (sounds trivial) piles of cloth squares for cleaning equipment etc - equally invaluable for grubby long distance tourists and shiney day tripping MAMILs.
Bodies - clean comfortable rooms, washing and drying facilities for clothes, excellent food, wall mounted safe.
My friends and I really enjoyed our short stay here, it is a great resting place for passing tourers but would be a fantastic base for a week of col bagging.
Thanks Phillipe & Valerie - you were lovely hosts.

France has a lot of wonderful places to ride bikes. Unfortunately, there are very few hotels that cater to cyclists. Au Primerose is one of those rare gems that welcomes cyclists with open arms and caters to their needs. The team at Au Primerose are knowledgable and helpful to the point of bending over backwards for their guests.

Quite simply Au Primerose is a 5 star hotel at 3 star prices.

If you are cycling in this part of the Pyrenees this is the place to stay. Everyone could not have been more helpful. Food excellent. Good selection of sensibly priced wine. The only negative is their coffee, otherwise would have been perfect.

We loved our 7 night stay au primrose! A week later my husband is still asking if we can cancel other parts of our trip to go back - or if we can just 'drive past to say hi to phillipe?'. That's the feeling you get after a stay at Au primrose - very settled & part of the family by the end! The rooms are simple but everything you need (we were in 205 which had a great balcony to relax on). Phillipe & his wife Valerie are the kindest people we have met on our 6 week trip. Phillipe gave great cycling routes to try everyday based on the weather & was never wrong! The meals at night were very tasty home style French cooking & good value. The bike storage room was excellent - very secure & plenty of space. The location is unbeatable for cycling in the Pyrenees (as well as hiking etc). We rode all the major mountain climbs (some twice) which were easily accessible from Argles. The town itself is charming with many great bakeries, cheese shops, a supermarket, bars, post office etc. Honestly, if you are looking for somewhere to stay for cycling in the area, just stop looking & book Au Primrose! Thanks Phillipe & Valerie for having us! We will be back! Sally & Ben

Room Tip: Room 205 has a great sized balcony which is nice to sit on after a ride or when it's raining to...

For a warm welcome, excellent rooms at a very reasonable price, superb location in a pretty town at gateway to the Pyrenees, and helpful information on where to go, what to see - and great for cyclists - you will find this hotal hard to beat. Philippe and Valerie Castellini are born hoteliers, welcoming new guests like old friends, and returning guests (me!) like family. Evening meal is simple, French, and excellent value - menu is posted up that morning, giving plenty of time for you to decide if you want to dine inhouse or elsewhere. Philippe speaks English too. There is no pool, but I could not clear this item rating when I clicked it by accident!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony - 215 is good, if you can get it.

We, a group of 17 cyclists, stayed at Au Primerose in June 2014. We specially enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, adapted meals with pasta buffet, clean and comfortable rooms, bike storage. We travelled from east to west through the Pyrenées and this was by far our best hotel. Philippe even gave us a short update of the weather conditions during breakfast. We recommend this hotel to everyone !

I would not hesitate to recommend the Au Primrose hotel as a perfect place to stay for anyone looking for a base to attack many of the classic Pyrenean climbs. We managed to cover the Hautacam, Gavarnie, Luz Ardiden, Soulor, Aubisque, Aspin, Spandelles and Tourmalet all from the Primrose during a 7 night stay. The quality of the food was fabulous with the chef producing a different 3 course menu every night. I would strongly recommend the additional pasta option for cyclists looking to take on extra carbohydrates each evening. The owner, Phillipe, and his wife could not have been more friendly and accommodating. The daily weather forecasts were extremely useful and usually spot on. I would also recommend a trip to the nearby Bath/Spa for a swim and some hydrotherapy but you will need to take swim trunks and not swim shorts.

Room Tip: The rooms with a balcony facing the Hautacam are great for views and drying out clothes.
