Readers should be aware this is not an unbiased review. I know the owner. I have not seen Torben in 13 years, we worked together on a project in China many years ago and have kept in touch from time to time. When I was going to Denmark I told him and he was kind enough to invite us to spend a couple of days at his and his partner’s campground. My tent camping days are pretty much over but cabins are OK … Torben met me in Copenhagen and took us on the hour drive to Vesterlyng. Most on motorways and then some smaller country roads. A very pleasant drive through pastoral countryside.
A few words about Denmark. It is flat (making for excellent biking) and expensive. However, there are compensations, lovely small town to explore, beautiful coastline and relaxing countryside. Then of course there is the pastries! It is expensive a 24% VAT and high business and property tax make things expensive. Yet if you shop carefully its not too bad. Certainly camping is cheaper than hotels.
Back to Vesterlyng. It is a 275 unit campground and also has 7 deluxe, fully equipped chalets and several smaller unserviced cabins. For campers without self contained kitchens and washroom facilities there are exceptionally clean washrooms, showers, large shared kitchen, and laundry.
Most of the visitors to the campground bring their own caravans. They were somewhat different than the big trailers and RV’s of Canada and US. A fair size with large tent enclosures attached to the front. The number of accessories from fences to lounge chairs almost all from the same company so the campground looks like a subdivision … yes you can bring an RV or a tent … lots of room … it is a very big campground.
Besides the facilities already mentioned there is a small well stocked store, and good restaurant … great cook. You can sample simple Danish country cooking. There are BBQ’s for you to use. Other facilities include:
• Mini golf
• Swimming pool and
• Children’s playgrounds
• Bike Rentals
• And just about thing else you could possibly need.
If you can’t find what you want by way of food or drink then the local coastal village of Havnsø is a delightful fifteen to twenty minutes away by foot and much less than that by bicycle. There is a good grocery store with lots of pastry ( a recurring them in my writing btw), picturesque harbour and 17th century pub. The pub is restored after a fire (at least one) its thatched room and near medieval look adds charm and you can get a Danish beer inside, nice patio area as well. The town also has several small restaurants, these where closed since we were there early in the season but we understand provide a variety of good food and reasonable prices.
The campground is on the coast in an estuarine area and is 10 minutes from an excellent sand beach. The tidal flats in front of the campground are alive with migratory birds particularly during the spring and fall. The hedgerows, tree lined walkways and roadway, and open fields add bird habitat. In the spring the “dawn chorus” is a load as in a rain forest. This is an ideal place for birdwatchers to spend a few days particularly mid May to mid June. The owners tell me that in mid June the nightingales sing in the trees in front of the campground.
Getting there, the easiest way is to come by car you can rent one easily in Copenhagen or other major cities. GPS is useful but a good map will get you there. You can bike in a day from Copenhagen. You can also take a train to the nearby town (13 km) of …… yes you can take your bikes on the train. If you rent a cabin for a week or so I am sure the owners will drop over an pick you up as well. There are hiking trails to follow as well and you can walk to the campground.
Regardless we had a truly wonderful visit and regardless of a possible bias could find little to criticise … a well managed facility. Well worth the visit and a chance to “chill out” and see some of Denmark that many visitors do not get to see.
