“Ideally situated”

We've just stayed in this hotel for two nights, and although it was very much used as purely a base, we had no complaints. Well appointed, clean room - room 207 - with a good sized bathroom with toiletries, towels and hairdryer included. Note, though, that there is a flight of stairs to thise room, so wouldn't be great for people likely to struggle with this.

Really well situated for the two squares, and just off the main shopping street, where designer shops can be found in abundance.Got a great deal on the internet - two nights for just over the price of one, so really pleased.

We stayed at this hotel in September 2013 and generally were very pleased. The hotel location and general appearance were good. The restaurant, presentation and quality of food was also very good. Our room unfortunately was not that good, although the bathroom was a decent size. The room was nothing like those in the website pictures and was barely big enough to walk around the bed. We were only there for one night so didn't have a chance to look at other rooms but I would definitely look to upgrade.

Located in a former monastery in a very quiet corner of the town centre our 'deluxe' room did not seem particularly deluxe; it seemed rather cramped. The tea & coffee making facilities - with milk - is a clear genuflection to the English clients although there were more Dutch plates visible in the carpark than GBs during our stay. The bathroom was a disappointment with those awful soap dispensers nailed to the wall instead of property toiletries. To add injury to insult the bath dispenser is fixed far too low to be of any use during a shower and had to be squeezed so hard that it is virtually useless during a bath as well. The heavy mould staining around the bath is another unwelcome feature.

Breakfast is an extensive buffet with a couple of token hot dishes; for example bits or bacon and some scrambled eggs. As french breakfasts go this is one of the best.

The secure car park in the courtyard is welcome although the greatest care is needed both when negotiating the tight corner at the entrance (especially when selfish idiots are double-parked in the corner of the square by the entrance) as well as when manoeuvring within the courtyard.

Just metres from the two Flemish style, cobbled town squares of Arras, this is a lovely hotel for a base when visiting the city and First World War sites in the area.

Set in a fine 17th century building, once a Jesuit Monastery, my room, overlooking the courtyard, was quiet and comfortable, with the elegant added touches of mineral water by the bedside and biscuity treats on the writing table. The bathroom was modern and clean.

A huge fan of ‘pain au chocolat’, coffee, and croissants, the breakfast was perfect for me. And the staff were welcoming and efficient.

There is parking in the courtyard but it’s worth checking that out before you go. Also, if you have mobility problems, make sure you reserve a room on the first floor as the lift doesn’t go to the second floor, which is reached by a long flight of stairs.

We chose because of good reviews and "City Centre", we were delighted to have secure parking (extra 9 Euros) and a very short walk to main squares and shops.

Our room was nicely appointed for this grade and evocative of a grand house. We loved it. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant but it was full of happy diners. The tasting menu was 50Euros but we ate under the sky in the lit Place Des Heros. Fabulous.

So much more to see and do in very fashionable Arras. We would certainly book in again.

My Husband and I stayed at l'Univers for two nights while visiting World War I sites. The hotel was excellently located for the centre of town and was easy to get to from the railway station.
We had a very comfortable, quiet room with an excellent bathroom/ separate toilet.
Breakfast was very adequate. We did not use the bar or restaurant otherwise.
Our only niggle was the difficulty we had in connecting with the WiFi (we were not alone in this) for although there was an explanation on how to do it in the room, it was incomprehensible and when we approached the reception staff about it we were told the explanation was out of date and they were unable to show us how to do it. In addition there was no 'computer corner' for guest use as also promised in the room brochure so we remained WiFi-less for the majority of our stay. That plus the off handedness of the reception staff made what could be a very good hotel a little off the mark, which is a pity

The location of this hotel is great - dead centre Arras, a five minute's walk from the Places. It is a former monastery - very quiet when there are no parties in the restaurant (which is very good by the way). Our price for a room for one night was 120 euros, which is steep; but apparently there are special offers (which include a dinner in the restaurant) which are better.

Room Tip: Check the culinary arrangements the hotel offers
