“Stopover en route to the Alps”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

About an hour South of Calais this makes an idea and easily accessed stopover. Great location with good restaurants nearby and easy parking. Rooms clean and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast OK to set you up for the onward journey.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet, room at the back of the hotel

This is a well placed, excellent Holiday Inn Express. We have issues travelling with a wheelchair, but no matter what we asked for, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. The bathroom is a delight in the accessible rooms with plenty of turning circle and a wheel in shower. The kettle is a welcome addition , as many French hotels don't provide one. We stayed here last July and did not hesitate to rebook for April when we knew we would be in the area. The wifi worked well and the breakfast was plentiful as usual.
We used the underground car park for safety and convenience, a tip for this is to pay the car park directly (it's cheaper) and if staying three nights or more, get a weekly ticket - it is 28.50 euros for the week. This makes the parking very reasonable. The receptionist, Nicolaos, was particularly helpful when we arrived, this is wonderful when you arrived tired and travel weary.
Will definitely be back.

Nice big room! The bed was 2 single beds pushed together but fairly comfortable. Wifi was fast. The breakfast buffet was good, I appreciated that there was hardboiled eggs available without having to cook them myself. It would have been nice to have a hot food option like scrambled eggs or bacon. The location is very good, close walk to many restaurants and bars. Parking was convenient, although it was public and across the street, the prices were very reasonable.

The only thing I did not appreciate was having the room cleaned despite leaving the do not disturb sign on the door knob. However we also had this issue at 2 other French hotels so I question if it's a European thing to clean the room everyday despite having the sign up?

Room Tip: Ask for a hotel room that is not facing the train track.

We were warmly greeted by Nicolaos on the front desk upon our arrival. However,my first impression of the room we were booked into was not good. Old and dark and with a view of a wall of the adjacent wing, dark carpets and just plain depressing looking! I called reception and Nicolaos offered to find us another room. This one was much larger and brighter also the décor was no less depressing. It seems to be stuck in a 80's timewarp - orange curtains and aqua/purple carpet. The tiles in the bathroom floor were lifting and it all needed desperate renovation. However, Nicolaos was so pleasant and eager to help, and we were tired, so we decided to stay. Really, it wouldn't take much to update this place, get rid of the floor tiles int he bathroom - the walls were perfectly serviceable, change out the curtains, paint the walls in a more updated colour and get rid of the hideous carpet throughout and this hotel would come up trumps. We had a good night's sleep, in room Wi-Fi was free, the price was not cheap, considering we paid about 40 euros a night less in a brand new hotel in Chamonix the night before but maybe that's the going price for Arras? parking was 10.50 euros. I'd probably stay here again if we needed a stop on the way to the Eurotunnel in Calais - provided it was renovated ie. tear up those loose floor tiles and lay a nice floor. An extensive continental breakfast was included in the price and is served in a sunny room in the lower level. I appreciated being able to boil my own eggs to my liking.

Room Tip: As for a bigger room that isn't dark and dingy!

The hotel is smart and inviting. The staff are friendly and efficient. The bar area was a real bonus - good choice of beers etc. Centrally located it was just what we wanted. Would definately go back when next in the area.

Stayed a night here last month on business and it was fine. A functional hotel in the middle of tow next to the train station. You could hear the trains but you would need to be a very light sleeper to be annoyed by them.

Didn't eat in the hotel but breakfast was fine, if you like making your own toast, brewing your own tea and even boiling your own egg! Croissants were good and very fresh and fruit salad and yoghurt went down fine.

Lack of a decent bar area marks this down for me. There is a bar, but you'd be pretty sad to be seen drinking at it...

Check in was very good, ultra quick and no long lecture.

Room Tip: Get a room facing away from the station

The entrance was slightly hard to find, but once there, check-in was seamless.
The location is next to the train station, but our room at the back was quiet; it boasted a king-size bed, sitting area, writing desk and all usual amenities (free WiFi, choice of pillows hard or soft, very good quality bed linens and towels; there was a grab bar in the shower, much appreciated!).

Window could not be opened, for security, so had to do with air con (mid March) but even with that, the room felt stuffy the next morning.

Good buffet breakfast in bright room on lower level consisted of mostly cold items, but a fair selection. An orange press for fresh orange juice was a rare find!

Parking price a bit steep (E10.50) but was in an underground, secure parking.

The lounge was a dimly-neon-lit area next to check-in, where one could get snacks too.

Restaurants aplenty in the Place de la Gare...

Room Tip: A room at the back would be quieter than the front due to the proximity of the train station.
