This restaurant tries to come across as high quality but I did not think that it hit the spot there. Amazed to hear from the maître d' that it was impossible to produce the prawn risotto without cheese. Pre prepared then? Food decidedly average and why you should have two courses of amuse bouche (rubber cheese on a stick and liquefied cheese) is beyond me. Wine list unimaginative and very expensive and not surprising that only a few in on the Friday when we visited and it closed early on the Saturday. As others have suggested if you are going to spend money like this walk on to The Matelote. Quite liked the dessert of gazpacho strawberries and others at the table liked some of the food so overall average.

Our usual restaurant, La Matelote, was closed for the post-Christmas break so we thought we'd try La Plage as we'd often passed and thought we might. We weren't disappointed! From the moment we walked through the door (no reservation) we were welcomed and attended to assiduously. The decor is typical bourgeois French, the service immaculate and the food superb. There's an extensive - and very good - wine list, and the total ambience highly congenial. We noticed that all the other customers were local - always a good sign - and many of them enjoying business lunches, although there was one gentleman (who appeared to be a regular) eating alone and receiving every bit as much attention and care as the rest. The bill for two came to €200 including the wine, but we did push the boat out a bit! The oysters were perfect.

This restaurant has been here for a while and we last visited it some 15 years ago. This time we were delighted to find that it is still going, and when we booked wonderied what we would find. It seems that over the years the one or two rough edges we experienced formerly had been smoothed. The welcome was friendly and, indeed, welcoming, the decor calm and grownup (though the gently soft porn artwork still adorns the walls). We ate superb seafood and had a fabulous meal. The only slight wobble was when I got out my camera to ask the waiter to take a photograph of four friends enjoying a fine evening out and the owner/maître d' rushed towards me and asked me NOT to photograph the dish we were eating. So don't even look as if you are going to photograph the food. We would certainly return, the food was superb (though, obviously, mainly fish-based).

Yesterday, four of us went for lunch, with the restaurant the highlight of an enjoyable day trip from Kent, encompassing an early morning visit to the Majestic wine warehouse (very good value) and a stop-off at the sea-front market (don't miss the home-made pates from the Ferme des Peupliers). After parking in the complimentary spaces across the road in the multi-storey car-park, we were welcomed into the full and gently buzzing dining room, where guests included a number of small multi-generational family groups and a larger party. Three of us chose the set menu for 45 Euros with the fourth, who is not a lover of sea-food going for the 36 Euro menu. A carrot and cinammon soup was served in a shot glass as an amuse bouche followed by (for the seafood lovers) a starter of a 'feuillete' of crab with prawns in a lemon butter sauce and a main of fillet of turbot with spring vegetables with scallops in a Champagne sause. The dessert was similarly seasonal, with strawberries spiced with Szechuan pepper in a sabayon sauce and a strawberry ice cream. The fourth person had foie gras with smoked duck salad, cod with spring vegetables and chocolate fondant (which he did not say was delicious until he had finished the last mouthful - it was not a dessert to share he decided!). All was cooked beautifully and was well-balanced. Wine is a particular strength at La Plage and the owner is a Master Sommelier. Our first bottle of wine, a St Veran, was corked and was immediately changed the minute we mentioned it. He recommended a Montagny as a second bottle, to accompany the main course. Both were excellent and reasonably priced, given the quality.

This is the third time I have visited this restaurant. The first time, about 5 years ago, my elderly mother and I found it much more to our taste than the higher rated and, we felt, the rather overblown and unwelcoming Matelote, situated nearby.

I expect this was not our last visit.
