“Imaginative and very good kitchen, delicious.”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

We took the Menu Saveurs de la Mer, and were bombarded by little dishes, every one of them extraordinary taste experiences. I love how he uses local products and what he does with them. Nice mix between very modern and classic, but every dish was top. Very good value for money. Friendly service but also some annoying mistakes. The wine list is expensive and unimaginative and this is really a pity. Go for a cheap one and concentrate on the food.

“Not worth its star”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

This restaurant has a Michelin star!!! You would never know it. We tried out the menu at 39 euros (a real bargain compared with the other menus and the à la carte prices) and were totally underwhelmed. The order was confused and two main dishes of colin arrived. They disappeared when we explained that my partner had ordered something else but I am fairly sure that my colin was the original one because it was overcooked. Aside of that it was totally bland as was the purée on which it sat. The whole thing was covered with rocket so zero for presentation. And this is a restaurant that prides itself on preparing sea food! The soup was also grim - not hot enough, the rouille already in place (no taste of garlic) and a soggy bit of bread on top. And on it went. Even the amuse gueules were over stated and over rich. The wine however was great but 60 euros for a Chateau Neuf demands a certain quality. The service was erratic, everyone seemed very busy but not well trained at all. The staff were friendly but they were inefficient. Add to this a decor that looked like a cross between grandma's parlour and an Indian restaurant and there you have it. I have eaten in several 1 stars in the last 2 months and they have all been streets ahead of this one. Fawlty Towers springs to mind.

“top quality fish cuisine”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

It is easy to see why this restaurant has a Michelin star. The setting is great and the food first class. The service was good and the wines flowed . I would have no hesitation in coming again although its rather a long way to go for lunch from the UK !.

“Traditional French cooking at its best”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

We were a bit concerned having read some recent reviews, but either those were badly prejudiced or hypercritical, or Tony Lestienne has pulled his socks up. This is the fourth Michelin * restaurant we have dined at this year and it was easily the most enjoyable.
But we ate a la carte and had fish starters and mains. We didn't think we would be able to find room for dessert but were seduced by the soufflé which rounded our meal off gloriously. The sole with a delicate lemon sauce was irreproachable while generous amuse-gueules wuth our glass of champagne whetted the appetite. Textures and flavours were carefully balanced so the classic cuisine was neither over rich or bland. This was masterly fish cooking. The Trimbachs (Alsace wines) seemed the most reasonably priced on the List.
At the front of house the service was formal but attentive and the setting opulent if a bit cramped. This was a special occasion so a big test for a restaurant but one which the Matelote came through with flying colours. Horrendously expensive but worth it.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

We'd been to La Matelote about eight years ago and enjoyed it. When we returned this September (2013) we were disappointed. Bored staff. Desultory service. The food was OK but didn't inspire and was overpriced. A Michelin starred restaurant should be better than OK.
