A city chain hotel that feels like a family run hotel. Good clean rooms with excellent continental breakfast facilities. Also good restaurants/brasseries within easy walking distance. The staff were always on hand and were very helpful.

1) Having double windows as who ever speaks in the street is heard as well as if he was in your room. The windows need to be changed as they don't close properly too.

2) The breakfast is in a room that could be furnished a bit differently. Room is underground in a space that is not real attractive. We go to the room like if we were going to the maintenance room...

However overall the hotel is in a very good spot and the staff is very nice.

We had a little difficulty locating the hoteal as Douai has a road system designed to favour the cyclist, with the result that my GPS got me to withing 60 yards of the hotel but I still could not see it.
The building is great from the outside and has been adapted to a hotel. There is no restuarant and breakfast is taken in the cellars, but apart from a creaking small lift, we had a good stay.
It is well located withing walking distance of the centre, and the staff were kind enough to give us a map and suggest the best route.

First the good news - the staff were lovely. The one disabled space was occupied and the receptionist moved her own car to make room for us in the very small car park. Luggage had to be bumped up steps but the building is old and interesting, and in a central location. Then the bad... we were given room 501, down a narrow corridor behind the reception desk. The corridor was scruffy with obvious building work being done and carpets were a bit grubby. Initially the room looked great, size ok, with a good shower room.
The room had huge windows and was in full afternoon sun and very hot. There was no air conditioning only electric heaters. Not too bothered as I don't like air conditioning but then we tried to open a window. The inside layer of double glazing section was easy to open but the outer, very old, and patched frames were impossible to budge. Too scared to use much force as they looked as though they would fall to bits.. Another very helpful receptionist helped us to open them, and provided a fan. Getting some fresh cooler air was a huge relief... but we had to wedge the windows with clothes as there were no window stays. There was what looked like a flat roof outside which appeared to be only a couple of feet above ground level. We were very worried about leaving the windows open and unsecured overnight as anybody could have climbed in. (We'd just travelled through Mulhouse and got lost on a council estate with gangs of disaffected youths hanging around looking very threatening - which reminded me of the (excellent) French TV series Spiral and really made me want window locks).
We spent a very sleepless night listening to loud creaks from pipework in the ceiling.
Looking up as we left I think other rooms on the first floor and above may have been a lot better but I really resent paying full whack for crappy rooms.

Room Tip: Avoid room 501. Be suspicious of rooms 502 and 503 on the same corridor.
