“Good services, amazing view from the hotel”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

This is a small hotel, run by a restaurant owner. I stayed at Chamber 6, which is facing the ocean with amazing sunrise view. The location of the room is near to restaurants and shops, unlike some of the hotels which rated higher but you got to walk quite a distance to the shops.
Besides, the manager can speak average English, which I have no problem to communicate with, and in fact, the manager is very honest, where I leave fair amount of cash inside the room when I check out, and I was on my way back to Paris via bullet train, therefore he kept the money for me and tele-transfer to me when I'm back to my country. This really impressed me with their honesty.

Room Tip: Ask for sea facing, I stayed at Chamber 6, amazing...

Decent, clean hotel. Try to get a room facing the bay, if possible. We parked in the parking lot and rode the train to the Mont. There is a lot of walking and stair involved, so we only brought one bag with essentials for the evening and next morning.

Great location for exploring the Mont and abby away from all the tourists. Nothing too fancy, but perfect to get an early start before the crowds set in. No air conditioning, but we were able to leave our window open at night which made us quite comfortable.

Found the Hotel Du Guesclin online and booked direct.
No car access to the Mont so had to park up on the mainland and haul our luggage from the car park to a free shuttle bus for the five minute ride across the causeway .
We were told that parking was free in designated car park for hotel guests but this was not the case, had to pay twelve euros.
On arriving on the Mont there is a quarter of a mile or so hike on what I assume is a temporary boardwalk to the base of the Mont.
There is a lot of construction work going on what appears to be a new access road.
From the entry gates its a steep climb to the hotels, when we arrived mid afternoon it was quite a physical effort to haul cases up the cobbled street tough the hoards of visitors.
Reception is located in the lower dining area bar, the staff were most welcoming and directed us to our room which entailed climbing the stairs to the first floor restaurant and exiting on to the ramparts where another set of steep stairs had to be negotiated to the room.
The room was very basic but clean, the sea view was stunning.
The best thing about this hotel is the restaurant, great food and fantastic views from the window tables.
Strongly advise to book a table on checking in, we did fortunately and by seven thirty the restaurant was full.
Again excellent staff.
There didn't appear to be many quality eating places on the island so I guess that's the reason for the restaurant filling up so quickly.
The best reason for staying on the Mont is by eight in the evening all the day trippers have left and its a very pleasurable experience to explore.

Room Tip: Book window table in restaurant as soon as possible.

nice , clean comfortable . The experience of spending the night at Mont Saint Michel is a must do !!! the sunset and night atmosphere as well as seeing the Abbey light up is amazing .
The Guesclin is nice , basic but comfortable .For 75 $ a night it was a good value . We went early in May and it was still cold in the Bay and there was not heating in the Hotel. so bring some sweaters ! Service was poor, actually no one is in the building after 8 pm . We couldn't reach anybody in the morning either since they open at 11 for breakfast .

Everything was great, the hotel is situated inside the mont, therefore excellent to walk around at night and in the morning, with no crowds. Good breakfast, nice rooms. Only bad thing: bathroom curtain very very smelly!!!

My wife and I decided to stay overnight in Mont St Michel. Unfortunately, the hotel did not add to the experience.  In order to get to the hotel you must first walk through an open restaurant and up stairs.

When we arrived, no one was at the front desk. This was a reoccurring theme during our stay. Luckily the maid was around and let us into our room.  The room itself was extremely outdated, and not in the charming way. It's location (#2) was sandwiched between the restaurant above and below. Also conveniently located next to the toilets for the restaurant.

The bed was ok and clean. The pillows (1 per person) were very thin and flat. And although the bathroom was small, we are used to tiny bathrooms traveling throughout europe.  What was not so nice was that we had a half used bath gel left for us courtesy of the hotel.  It wasn't just forgotten there either, since it was perfectly placed next to a  soap bar on display.

It really seemed as if the hotel was an afterthought to the restaurant. As the walls were very thin, you could hear a ton of noise from the restaurant. We would often have people glare at us as we walked into the room since they were unaware it was also a hotel.  To add, a woman also barged into our room...not sure why..maybe to find the bathroom?

And i mentioned those paper thin walls...we also heard sawing and pounding noises late at night...yes, sawing?? Eventually the noise died down late in the evening when the restaurant closed. However, we got woken up around 4am by the sound of the restaurant and outdoor shops getting ready for another day of a tourist mob scene.  Imagine multiple crates of fruits and vegetables being dragged across cobblestone. And it really never stopped until the first set of tourists arrived to mont st Michel.

When we checked out in the AM, of course there was no one at the front desk...but we did find staff at the restaurant upstairs. They did not ask how our stay was...just rung up our bill and said au revoir. If you really feel the need to stay over night at mont st michel, it might be worthwhile to stay higher up on the hill, away from the loud tourists.  Maybe the other rooms in this hotel are better, but we highly recommend staying away from rooms #1 and #2. There was no charm to be had at all.

Wow!

If you are planning to visit Mont St Michel and stay near the island, 100% recommend staying on the island. Not only do you have the chance to explore every hidden stairway and see all of the different views, but once the majority of tourists have left for the day, about 5PM or so, you have the place to yourself.

The Du Guesclin was a very nice hotel with a nice view of the abbey which is preferable to me than the ocean view. The staff were welcoming, though in some cases with no English ability. Other staff spoke English well however. Amandine, in particular was very helpful and nice to deal with. The response from the hotel before arrival was very good and the hotel shuttle system worked fine for getting to-and-from. prior to arrival they sent us the instructions for the shuttle parking. Though we needed to ask for the code to enter, the security guard let us in without it.

The room was fair-sized with a large washroom, though not well-insulated so the other occupants could understand quite well what was happening in there. Otherwise the bed was fine, smallish TV (but you are not there to watch TV!), and quite surroundings. No AC in the room, though it was extra coll when we went (early July 2012), so it was totally unnecessary. If it were hot out, it might be an issue.

We had dinner outside of the hotel, so I cant comment on the hotel restaurant, but my wife felt the meal we did have was one of the best of our trip to France, so there are some good options on the island! The one we went was one of the first as you get on the island, on the left side, just past Mere Poulards. It was quite busy all night, so I am sure you will find it!

Overall advice: Spend the early part of the day on the way to MSM sightseeing along the way (we went to Etretat), then arrive mid-late afternoon. Check in and relax a bit. Wait for the tourists to leave and head up to the abbey about 5 or 6PM before the sunsets. Then find a good location to watch the sunset before heading for dinner. Wake up early to look around the island a little more in complete silence (expect for a few croissant delivery men), enjoy a nice breakfast and then depart before it gets too busy. I would also suggest packing a separate, smaller bag for the one night you stay as pulling large luggage up the very crowded street is difficult due to the crowd and the cobble stones.

Room Tip: We asked for a view. For us, we preferred, and received, a view of the Abbey. After all, that'...
