“Disappointed”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We have just returned from a week touring Brittany and Normandy staying in five different hotels. Of the five this hotel was by far and away the poorest, which was most disappointing given that we had selected Relais du Silence hotels and then cross referenced them on Tripadvisor. When we arrived our check in was fine, but when our friends turned up the receptionist took a telephone call although they were waiting, without so much as an apology. After ten minutes we all gave up and went into town, leaving the check in until later.
Our room was a tiny twin room built into the eaves and with limited headroom on one side. Care had to be exercised when moving about to avoid the low beams. When using the mini bar care was also need to avoid the low slung television above. We queried the room but we were told yes, this is your room.
The first floor common areas were dark and dingy and when we inspected the indoor pool we gave up on the idea of a swiim.
We dined in as the hotel is out of town and had a good reputation. Unfortunately that was also a less than memorable experience. The waiting staff were first class but someone needs to tell the chef the difference between rare and raw. I like rare lamb and at a push will eat it virtually raw, but even I draw a line at raw guinea fowl.
Overall not an enjoyable stay, and somewhere we would never return to, which is a shame as of the other four hotels, three we want to go back to and the other was perfectly adequate. Relais du Silence, you need to carry out some reviews.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

As I say to your friends, sorry that you didn't appreciate our house, you didn't say anything about your room, your meal but easy to write. As the receptionnist didn't said sorry I can't believe it and I think the chef knows the way to cook the lamb. No complaint on your departure, I really don't understand.

When we arrived we were instantly upgraded - always a good start! Massive bedroom, great bathroom + a separate lounge together with second TV. The staff were very attentive, the dinner was very good and the breakfast was excellent. We hope to return in spring or summer to make better use of the grounds - by then, hopefully, the refurbishment of the town centre will be complete!

It was slightly ironic that having spent all day marvelling at how wonderfully quiet the roads of Normandy were compared to those in my native South Eastern England, I should end up booking a "Relais de Silence" right next to a busy road. The hotel is less than 100 yards from an A road and there is a constant background rush of traffic. If you come in winter you will be fine, but with the windows open it was too noisy for me to stay in the room I was first given, so I moved round the back. The staff were perfectly civil about this and seemed used to such requests. In fact the staff are the best thing about this hotel. Unfailingly polite, friendly and professional.

The restaurant is not bad, but not great. I'm not sure why I didn't take to it; the cooking is genuinely excellent, the wine list superb, especially on provence, burgundy and claret. It did not help that I was given the table right next to the kitchen doors, even though several tables were (and remained) empty. I must admit I was also put off by the flies. It is impossible to hermetically seal a restaurant, and there will always be the odd fly. But they should not be, as it were, noticeable. I have never eaten in a 3 star restaurant and noticed the flies. But this is not a 3 star restaurant. The atmosphere was formal, slightly tense, focused on the cuisine and the expectations of the diners, the chef and the staff, outmodedly decorated ... It sort of made me want to eat in bistros, or 3 star places, and avoid what lies between. In short, worth going to if you are in the area, but bring a fly swat (and earplugs if staying the night).

We noticed all your complaint. About the noise.... we are in the forest and I'm not sure that during night it is busy, even if your windows are opened. About flies, yes it is a summer with a lot of flies, what can we do, except to put some product (no good for the restaurant). Somme summer we had a lot of wasps but not this time. Four lines to speak about flies.. it is special. All the best.

We stayed for a week at Le Manoir du Lys and were beautifully looked after. The food in the restaurant is sensational and we enjoyed going to the sister bistrot in Bagnoles for dinner too.
Welcoming staff, lovely pool, tennis court and great walks from the hotel all added to the enjoyment of our stay.

Room Tip: ask for a room refurbished in 2011

We booked in here for a couple of days before a week in a gite with our two four year old granddaughters. The idea was to get a bit of peace and quiet after the journey and before the hurricane that is two four year olds.

Perfect.

My wife is disabled and really, nothing was too much trouble. The staff were a delight, the room was gorgeous, the setting beautiful, and it is just so peaceful. As a bonus, they had draught beer on tap – not always found in hotels at this end of the market. We spent most of our time here either asleep in two of the loungers spread around the gardens, or eating another delicious meal in the restaurant.

The meals can get expensive but we ate the 45€ menu both nights and it was fine. Breakfast at 16€ p.p. might seem expensive until you get to the buffet and see what is on offer – most of it produced either by the chef himself or locally. Excellent value.

I cannot find a single thing to fault, and we would certainly return without hesitation.

Room Tip: I don't know but I would imagine all the rooms are delightful.

We stayed here on one of our last nights in France on the way home from Brittany in early July 2013. On arrival we were upgraded to a superior room without asking which is always a nice touch. The room was beautiful, quite modern in the old Manoir with a balcony. We had a swim in the indoor/outdoor pool which was great and a bit of a sunbathe in the early evening sunshine. We opted to eat in the restaurant and we are so pleased that we did. The food was spectacular in a restaurant that fully deserves its Michelin star. For the very high quality it was good value too, though clearly it is a real treat to stay here and is obviously not a cheap option. We would go back like a shot and even if you can't stay or get a room here then try and eat in the restaurant if you're passing through. As somewhere like this should be the service was excellent all round.
