“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

I traveled for business purposes and the Hotel de la Plage is a very nice location, located on a beautiful bay with breathtaking sunsets.
The hotel rooms are pretty small but nicely decorated and traditional.
I dined in the restaurant, which invoices separatedly from the hotel, but food was ok and nice service.

It is said Jacques Tati viewed every bay from Dunkirk to Biarritz before returning to the idyllic Saint Marc sur Mer to film his inimitable Les Vacances de M. Hulot. And it’s easy to see what drew him back.

Assuming you’ve watched the film, the first recognisable landmark from your ingrained black-and-white image of the town is Hotel de la Plage itself, quickly followed by the unmistakable crescent-shaped beach with its bold rocks, and that stone jetty (currently sadly ‘accès interdit’).

You won’t see the terraced villas opposite the hotel, one of which sported the balcony from where the delightful Martine surveyed all, as they don’t exist any more – and the balcony never did: it was one of the numerous sets which Tati had constructed.

The beach, the hotel, the tennis: suddenly, you find yourself in the place where it all happened, and it’s quite a feeling.

Despite chancing upon the three hottest days of 2014 so far, we were greeted by a gusty breeze (which also featured in the film) on the town-side of the hotel, giving us the feeling we’d be wrapping ourselves up for much of our stay. However, out on the other side, the beachfront terrace was a sun trap – and a sublime spot indeed.

We lunched there on arrival. The pizzas were gigantic, so we probably spent double what we needed to, especially because the waiter was more than happy to serve half-pizzas to our guests when they arrived later.

Looking around the hotel, the ground floor décor has a maritime driftwoody feel to it, with hints of Hulot, but in no way tackily or over-done (that balance goes for the whole town, which I’ll touch on later). Don’t go trying to match the hotel interior with the film, as slightly anti-climactically, all interior scenes were shot at Boulogne-Billancourte Studios in Paris.

The restaurant, curiously a separate business to the hotel, leans more towards art-deco. Cuisine was perfectly good, though more emphasis on fruits-der-mer would have been appreciated. A party of seven, of whom four were children, we dined there on our last evening for just over €200. Again, staff were happy to add value by boxing-up food for the next day’s picnic. However, reduced portions and prices might be preferable.

Upstairs, we found our rooms clean and well maintained, but diminutive, although this was more than mitigated by their sizable sea-facing terraces, of which the one outside our room was huge. In fact, viewing the terrace from the beach, I could see it was actually more than half the width of the entire hotel.

We had debated whether to take breakfast in the restaurant, but in the end, opted to pop to the town’s excellent boulangerie for croissants and pains aux chocolats, and have it on that massive terrace instead. Not to have done so would have seemed a wasted opportunity, and we saved a few euros into the bargain.

Special mention has to go to the staff of this contented hotel. Throughout our stay, we always had that je-ne-sais-quoi feeling that our presence there was appreciated. Not a feeling you get in all establishments.

I’ll sign off with a few words about the town, which as I say, celebrates Hulot history in a way that the man himself would probably have approved of.

Along the beachfront, look for the newly erected pale blue and white-striped ‘totems’. Each divulges an insight about the making of the film, and cleverly enables you to view the relevant scene as it is now, through a diamond cut-out.

Wander up the sea road, join the coastal path, and in moments you’ll have stunning views of cliffs, coves, caves and bays, all of which are easily reached by concrete steps.

And you’ll also happen upon the location, now a children’s playground, where Hulot played his riotous game of tennis, serving so ridiculously, beating all-comers.

Enjoy your vacances.

Room Tip: Book room 105 for that massive terrace.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

On my first night of this visit to France I wanted to make a bit of a pilgrimage in honor of my late parents to the place where Mr. Hulot's Holiday was filmed as that was their favorite. The weather in Paris was fantastic but as I got further west the clouds were getting dark and it began to rain. Just at i arrived in the town of St. Nazaire my GPS went dead and I since I had GPS this trip I left my Michelin map at home. It was dark, rainy, and I was lost. I phoned a friend and she looked it up online and did her best to guide me in. Strangely, the roads in St. Nazaire are not parked as well as most other regions in France and it was quite difficult finding the place. When I did arrive the hotel was immaculate, the rooms were modern and clean, and the restaurant downstairs was going full-tilt. Lots of fantastic seafood in an Italian style preparation was being served. The lobby staff was really great and breakfast the next morning was pretty complete.

Dear Guest,

It is a real pleasure to read your commentary and we thank you for your message.

Saint Marc sur Mer is a very small and lovely place of Saint Nazaire that's why it is a quite difficult to find us!!! It is just to keep secret the famous place where the movie has been made!!

We hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again for an other stay with the sun!!

Best Regards

We have known St Marc over the years. It has grown a lot and the hotel is now part of the Best Western chain.
The receptionist was excellent. We have never met such a professional receptionist even in 5 star hotels. Asked if we wanted to speak French or English.
The room was well presented very suitable for beachside use. Clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was good value.
The only downside was the lack of air in the rooms. It was October so not that hot but it can get very hot there in summer. We had a seaview which was great but if we had the window shut we stifled, if the window was open it was very noisy with the waves. Later that night it was raining so the room began to get drenched with the window open!! I do think that air conditioning as needed in the rooms to make the stay perfect.

We had 2 nights here and greatly enjoyed the location. The first night we were in a sea-facing attic-type room on the top floor which is part of the original building, so has some connection to the movie. For the second night we were able to upgrade( for a small extra charge) to a room on the first floor with a huge outdoor deck. Both rooms were nice but the outdoor space with the deck was well worth paying extra for.
The restaurant seems to be very busy at lunch, much quieter at dinner and offers a good choice. The advertised 'American' buffet breakfast was really French buffet breakfast.
We're not sure whether to be pleased or annoyed that the whole village is so low key about the association with the movie. There was nothing to buy as a memento. In desperation we have a fridge magnet!
There is a short walk which captures a couple of the movie locations.
Hotel, here's an idea. Have 'Mr Hulot's Holiday ' playing on an endless loop on a TV channel. Many people (all of us at breakfast) come there because of the movie and it would have been fun to watch it while staying there. (Cannot claim this as an original idea. A very famous hotel we stayed in in India does this with a well-known Bond film)
Hotel staff were friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: If you are on holiday and the weather is good, pay extra to get a terrace room

Beautiful hotel and restaurant with an old fashioned elegance about it, yes our room was small but the view, the sheer joy of the view, simply amazing.
The room is decorated in contemporary chic, the staff are all rushing around for everyone, willing to help with anything at all.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view
