“A lovely site in a good location!”
Reviewed 11 June 2012

We stayed here for a week with Canvas Holidays over the half term and had a fantastic time! The site is a good size with lots of plots privately owned which meant the site was well kept and tidy. The accommodation with Canvas was scattered all around the site along with a couple of other operators. The site is mainly sandy but has lots of shade which was nice as it was quite warm. Our accommodation was great we had 2 beds and it was clean and modern with plenty of blankets and pillows. There is a small shop onsite but the opening hours seemed a little erratic (perhaps due to the fact the site was quite quiet as it had only been open a couple of weeks), I never used it as there was a great bakery and a supermarket 5 minutes walk down the road. The supermarket had a good selection, but was more expensive than the Hyper U a drive 10 minute drive away. The restaurant/takeaway and bar offer a good selection of pizzas, burgers, chips and some fantastic mussels and chips (the curry ones were particularly good and the portion was large) and there was a large screen for Euro 2012, the pool area was great, there are essentially 2 one unheated is shallow for children at one end and goes under the bridge to a depth of 1.6m, there are also slides with seperate pools at the bottom, the second pool is heated and has water jets, built in sunloungers with bubble jets, and seating areas. There were lots of loungers, parasols and chairs but I imagine in high season it is pretty packed. The beach (which is fantastic) is walkable but be used the car as we had buckets and spades nets and towels, but there is a car park with lots of space and toilets. The Canvas reception was easy to find on arrival and the staff were all really welcoming and friendly. The site is a Canvas Family extra so there was plenty to do for everyone and activities you could do as a family. The kids club couriers were great and made for a fun time, some of the activities on offer were snorkelling, water walkers, raft building, mad scientist, space adventure, family olympics, sweetie bingo and a chocolate party (warning! put your kids in clothes you don't mind getting messy for this as they paint one another with it!). If you like to cycle there are plenty of routes making lots of places really accesible. All in all a fantastic time had by all and we will be going back!

We had stayed at the campsite next door a few years before, but never used Direct Camping / French Freedom, and would NOT use again. Although the site was lovely, clean and staff were helpful, the French Freedom side of things was very poor. The caravan was well worn and dirty, not all lights working, not fully equiped (2 knifes for the entire holiday), curtain rail broken off the wall, no gas barbeque, broken furniture both inside and outside, and generally not good. When we complained to the F F reps they said there was not alot they could do, they were waiting for a delivery of items to re stock. There was no kids club - excuse saying there weren't enough kids, when the site was full with families. We had to keep asking for our wrist bands which enabled us to use the facilities. We left messages in the F F Reception tent as it was never manned but never got a response. We could see that some people were without gas for more than 2 days before it was replaced. It appeared that the F F reps were not fulfilling a customer service. If we wanted any info we went to the Canvas reception who were very helpful and friendly. When we got home I complained in writing to Direct Camping with photographic evidence - twice, but they have never even acknowledged yet alone offered compensation. Do not book with Direct Camping!

Room Tip: Would recommed to use the site, but go with a reputable company - not French Freedom which Direct Ca...

Dear Mr Johnson & Family, The traditional mobile homes which you stayed in were in there last season of use and have now been replaced with the new style cottage mobile homes all fitted with decking. There was a staffing problem at Acapulco in the peak of season as two couriers had to return home for personal reasons which left the other couriers stretched until cover was found. The service you received was far from our usual standard. We value all our customer feedback good & bad and are concerned that you have not had an official response to your complaint. Please feel free to send a copy of the complaint to me directly Mike Birkinshaw and I will respond accordingly. I'm glad you enjoyed camping Acapulco as Henri Jacques and his team make huge efforts to make it the great site that it is. Regards Direct Camping.

If you are looking for a well run, clean, static home/campsite experience, I would thoroughly recommend Camping Acapulco. It has a modern reception area with helpful bi-lingual staff, which has plenty of leaflets on things to do in the local area. Lots of greenery and hedging to break up what is a large complex. Shower blocks were spotless.

Pool area is well designed with a number of slides to keep children entertained. As some previous reviewers have mentioned, It does get crowded but you can't expect it to yourself in mid August!

The site itself is a short drive away from the superb beach. You could walk it if you are "car averse" but with all the stuff you need for a day at the beach, driving is by far the best option.

A few shops and bars and the all-inportant Super U are located in the small town. Don't expect fine dining - it is moules frites based and mostly fast food outlets

We went to St Jean De Monts on a rainy day (of which there were a few In late August) and it was OK but you wouldn't want to spend any amount of time there. Bit Soufend for my liking.

We booked with French Freedom after seeing their 10 day £999 with ferry included offer. I ended up paying more as I wanted to cut the driving time in France so sailed to Caen. Extras like decking, barbeque and linen also pushed up the total. Still reasonable value though

On arriving, we found the FF reception which was a tent. Yes, a tent. A very bedraggled tent with no one in it. a table and some deflated beach balls, lilos etc. That was OK, the rep had left us a nice note and our keys.

Unit was clean if a touch basic, but just felt tired. Linen that we paid for was best described as "musty".

We had no contact from the rep at all during our 10 night stay. I don't need or want daily contact but a little pointer as to local amenities, shops, things to do would have been appreciated. I think it is also important to receive a welcome from the Company that you have decided to use for your summer holiday to welcome you. Basic manners really

Also, one of the reasons I booked with this Company is that they raved in their brochure about their Kids Club. We had no idea where, what, who to go to for this so my children didn't go. The rep was never in her tent. Don't blame her really.

We actually used Canvas Holidays for information, kids club etc and they were great. Very helpful and a well equipped reception area with lots of information on display.

In summary, we had a great holiday in Western France as it is a perfect area to go for a family holiday but this was in spite of French Freedom, not because of them. Do yourself a favour and book with someone else.. .

Room Tip: Canvas Holidays look a good bet for this campsite.

Just thank you for all those details... It will probably be very usefull for the people who are not yet decided to chose our campsite. French Freedom is now aware of your comments and promise to improve the quality of their services including at the reception.
Our aim is to make the people happy and your comments will help us to do better. Thank you.

We stayed here in 2006 with French Freedom, the reps were very helpful and we were looking forward to returning to this site. We booked the ferry a day early and checked in to a budget hotel in Le Mans Ouest en route to split the journey from Calais to Saint Hilaire. There were lots of improvements since our previous holiday here, the new outdoor heated pool to complement the existing one. The bar area, on-site shop and main entrance had also been brought up to date. The entertainment was good, a live band one evening and a live singer on another occasion. Just a short walk to the beach and supermarket. We had a fabulous holiday at a really good price, fortunatley not spoilt by the fact the kids club which is included in the price was non-existant, the reps made excuses why they were not running it! The mobile home was not fully equipped with basic things like enough plates for our family although some of the missing items arrived after a couple of days but not the full inventory. Had we not have had previous experience of French Freedom we would not recommend them or book with them in the future, however on our last holiday at this site in 2006 the reps were extremely helpful and friendly so hopefully we were just unfortunate on this occasion.

Room Tip: Better to be further away from the bar area as the entertainment can be noisy

Many thank for your advise. That is sure that chosing French Freedom is a way to travel in france at good price. If you hesitate to come back with French Freedom, know that you can book directly with the campsite Acapulco. However, prices will be higher but the benefits will be of better quality.
We would be happy to see you again.

We stayed in this campsite for 10 days starting mid-August. We booked it through Charles Alexander at the last minute (not quite sure whether we could get away or not because of work commitment). Jodie and Jon were very good, very approachable and dealt with things very efficiently. The mobile home was OK (I think it hadn't been hired in a while hence the weeds all around it, but were removed after we requested it), clean and all in working condition. The gas bottle ran out but within 10 minutes of calling Jodie and Jon we had a replacement. We were very impressed!!! The pool complex is new and suits all ages (we have 4 kids, 13, 11, 10, and 4). The lifeguards could have been more present to maintain order sometimes. It could have had a couple of more toilets inside the pool complex and also a bit better looked after because like every campsite I have been to (I have been to many because I was raised in France), the toilets are always a bit unclean especially towards the end of the day.
The take away is good value, the shop is good enough for essentials, the reception staff was polite and bilingual. They had activities just about everyday, the boys enjoyed the tennis competition and the sport activities between 2 campsites. It felt very safe. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing stay.

We stayed in 2008 and returned in August 2011 with Charles Alexander. Jon and Jodi are pro-active and approachable when you require anything.
The 3 bed moblie home had decking and was clean and presentable when we arrived. It had plenty of utensils for cooking etc. However, if you haven't been before try and take other stuff you need for day to day family living i.e. tea towels, soap, towels (you can hire linen) but we took our own bed sheets, pillows etc.
We returned to the site knowing what we were going to get. A family orientated park (we are a family of 5 ages 13, 10, & 6). The new swimming pool area is fantastic and the kids all loved playing in it, and safe enough for my 6 year old. One negative about the pool is very little shade when it gets hot, as learnt from trip 3 years ago, so we took out own parasols this time which helped keep the kids out of the sun.
The pool gets busy in the afternoon so get there early to get sun beds!
The beaches all along St. Jean De Monts are fantastic. Plenty of sand and when the tide goes out lots of digging and sandcastles to make. Take a strong kids spade with you!
We did pack a lot of food as well in our car to take i.e. pasta, sauces, baked beans, ketchup, salt pepper etc as food does seem to be very expensive now in France (fortunateley the beer and wine are still cheap).
There are two tree climbing centres near the camp. One is south along the coast, and one just North East of St. Jean De Monts. Definitely recommend them both and many hours of adventure for the older kids (my 10 & 13 year olds went on all the runs).
Mini crazy golf next to park which was good fun.
St. Jean De Monts has a busy pedestrian street with loads of shops to buy souvenirs and ice creams. You can also hire the 4 wheel bikes along that way and pedal along the huge promenade.
All in all we enjoyed our stay for a good family holiday, even with the occassional thunderstorm & rain. It's not 5 star luxury, but we didn't expect that when we went.

We stopped by to Camping Acapulco in our motorhome for a couple of nights, having stayed here a few years ago.

The staff were not particularly helpful, and as we had just dropped by we had to enquire or negotiate on pricing. The staff only seemed interested in screwing every penny out of us that they could, although the manager did me a deal. Following this, one of the reception staff tried to short change me on staying for a second night, by 10 euros, when I pointed this out it was as if I had tried to rip her off, no apology, nothing.

The pitches on the site seemed OK, if a little crowded. We arrived at the and of August, just as the French hols finish, so it wasn't overcrowded but still busy. We were told by people who had been there a couple of weeks that it had been very overcrowded particularly around the pool complex the week before.

The pool complex is great now, as it has recently been upgraded, a small kids paddle pool, slides and pool, main pool and spa type pool. Lifeguards are come and go, so you need to keep an eye on the kids at all time, though several parents didn't bother controllong their anti-social teenagers - not the site's fault, although lack of staff at the pool contributes to this.

We did hear that their had been a lot of trouble the week before with french and english teenagers, with a 12 yr old english lad beaten up by a group of french lads - didn't witness it but the lads dad told me.

Overall an OK site, better out of season, staff need a bit of a lesson in customer service and in toning down the attitude.

I just read your message carefully. I'm happy to know that you like camping but very disappointed to see that it went wrong at the reception. In my opinion, this is most certainly a misunderstanding because our rates are posted at the reception, outside and inside, in the brochure from the campsite and on the website.
I can not let you think that the price we head to our customers, or our mood. For motorhomes, we offer two types of pitches on Acapulco: a place for short stay of 35m ², on the edge of parking, with private space and a picnic table or a classical pitch of 80m² to 120m ². We have two different prices for each of these categories of pitches. This perhaps explains the price changes ...
In terms of affluence, I can not say the opposite : we get a lot of tourists in August, but fortunately we have beautiful stretches of beach.
