We did a two day tour which was marvellous. Leah, our guide, spoke very good English and had a broad knowledge of the history of the battles fought on the Western Front. We were able to see the memorials and cemeteries where our Aussie diggers are buried as well as the graves of the other Allied forces and also a couple of German cemeteries. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a tour with only a maximum of 7 guests.

Brilliant! My wife and I have been traveling on our honeymoon and our last stop in France was Amiens. I have two relatives who fought in the region in WW1, one who came home and one who didn't. Our guide Lea,not only took us to the cemetery where my relative was buried but had done research into how, when and where he had died also. She took us as close to where the trench he died in could be accessed and I'll be forever grateful for that experience.

Her general knowledge of the entire Somme campaign and I'm sure the whole of WW1 in France was exceptional and she had answers to our groups many questions.

Unfortunately we only had time to do the one day tour but I will be back in the coming years to do it again.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH

If you only have one day, this is the tour to do. We were a family of four. We chose a French owned and operated tour company to gauge the level of remembrance, reverence and appreciation. We were not disappointed at any stage!
From first email inquiry Estelle answered all our questions, clearly set out the itinerary, the train timings from Paris and transparent costing. On arrival at Amiens we were greeted by the welcoming, gregarious and knowledgeable Sylvestre and his warm mini-bus (it was frightfully cold!). His knowledge was immediately apparent as after greetings the first question was which of the guests had ancestors that served – mental note as Sylvestre took the descendants directly to the memorials of the relevant divisions as the tour proceeded.
We visited all in one day Villers-Bretonneux, the Australian Memorial, the Victoria school (as Victorian schoolchildren the impact on our children was positively immense), Pozieres (“Gibraltar” bunker), Albert Cathedral, Lochnagar mine crater, one eerie German cemetery (little details that Sylvestre excels at included explaining how the authorities, as victors, chose the less than appropriate sites for then enemy cemeteries), the Thiepval memorial, Newfoundland park and preserved trenches and 1916 battlefields.
The cost was €390 – we covered all this in one 14 hour day from Paris. Looks expensive but it is not when divided by four, the number of kilometres travelled and the number of sites seen with accurate description. If we had to this in our own hire car we would have been lucky to cover the same ground in 4 or 5 days and we would have missed all the context and nuances (if not sites altogether as some of the bunkers are concealed from the road).
It is difficult to list highlights because the underlying reason for doing the tour is so fundamentally sad (Sylvestre mentioned that on average 6 souls are unearthed each month despite the passing of 100 years and munitions are dug up daily by the farmers). Somewhat ironic for a Victorian, the main highlight was the Newfoundland park – if Australia made a sacrifice what these brave guys did defies logic. It drew us ever so closer to the shared values of all brave allies. The Newfoundlanders (after WW2) even lost their unique independence as an equal to us and joined their bigger Canadian cousin. The defiant Caribou was a stirring and appropriate custodian to this sacred land and kudos to Canada. The other highlight was confirmation of the reverence, remembrance and gratitude expressed by the guides and all locals we came into contact with.

We recently took the Terres de Memoire WW1 battlefields tour out of Amiens. We wanted to focus on the Australian plus other aspects of WW1. Sylvestre's knowledge & passion for this subject were wonderful. Powerful experience . Great memories. Plan to get back from Australia to explore further. Highly recommended

Great job Sylvestre
